To expect to get paid?

Posting here for traffic and name changed for obvious reasons.

I work on a casual basis for a huge national organisation, which normally pays on the 28th of each month, or earlier if that falls at the weekend. So I was expecting to get paid for the work I did in June last Friday.

The manager of the department I worked for says she is speaking to payroll to arrange payment for me and has promised me an update daily, but never actually gets back to me unless I chase.

My pay is now close to a week late and I'm still no clearer about when I can expect to receive payment.

It's shit enough to have a zero hours contract without having to chase daily with no response trying to get paid the crumbs of work I have done.

Can any wise MNetters offer any advice before I pull my hair out?

No advice sorry but I agree it is very shoddy. Bet they all get paid on time.

Honestly, I'd be looking to work elsewhere. Can't stand companies like this.

Hadalifeonce · 01/08/2018 11:38

I would speak to Payroll direct if you can, you have more of a vested interest in getting this sorted out than your manager.

HollowTalk · 01/08/2018 11:39

That's disgraceful. Can you call Payroll yourself?

ZeroHoursZeroPay · 01/08/2018 11:52

Payroll say they can't help me until they have had some forms from the manager. The manager says she has been dealing with someone in pay roll, but pay roll deny anyone by that name works there.

I'm going round in circles trying to get anyone to take ownership.

Can you complain to the HR Department? This is unacceptable.

possumgoddess · 01/08/2018 13:01

In the past I have had a manager who hasn't been very good at the admin side of things and the easiest way to get things done in a reasonable timeframe was to find out exactly what was required, do all the paperwork for her and then just give it to her to sign. I haven't been in your situation thank goodness, but others in my department were and it just made things so much easier if I just got on and did all the donkeywork for her. (Plus it got me a promotion to Office Manager so that it actually became my job to do it!)

Ask your manager who you should complain to as if it's not in in a few days you'll be overdrawn and expecting the business to compensate for charges.
May or may not make him shift his arse.

Thanks for the messages.

Unfortunately it's not as simple as doing the paperwork and handing it to a manager to sign. Apparently the manager needs to log on to a portal and input the hours. I have an email from the manager saying they approve the hours, but payroll can not do anything with the email, it has to be on the portal.

I spoke to HR at lunchtime, they have given me contact details of someone to complain to, so I have left a voice mail and sent an email.

I could weep at the indifference/ineptitude of all those involved. (Including myself for naively thinking it always pays to work)
