What is your opinion on these?

I'm getting little to no sleep with my 4 month old at the moment and was wondering if these are safe?

Tiny babies don’t sleep much and sleep deprivation is hideous. These kinds of products make me cross because they’re marketed directly at desperately exhausted new parents.

I don’t see the difference between this and swaddling cloths! Not all babies like being so tightly wrapped up. And at 4 months your LO will be rolling soon and won’t be happy about being restricted - even when asleep!!

I had one and it was a Godsend. Mine had bad reflux and needed to lie a bit propped up, so I swaddled and put him in the safety sleep to stop him sliding down the bed. We used it up to about 1. It kept him snug. They are popular in NZ but unheard of in the UK. Other cultures swaddle and effectively strap down, so not a new notion.

Agree, they are very popular in NZ. I did buy one but ended up returning it as I felt it was going to be one more thing to wean my DD off (the HV said similar) and I didn't want to go through all that. But I do know several mums from the baby group I attended had great success with them.

I swaddled my pair after a few months of hideous non sleep and it did help, don't know if it is still thought safe.

Thanks

He is rolling over, that is the issue. He rolls from back to front, gets his face stuck pressed into the mattress and screams because he can't roll back over to his back and is too tired to lift his head up (Or he does lift it up but is then completely wide awake).

He also pokes his legs through the bars all the way up to his hip and then screams because he's stuck and it hurts. And constantly rocks his head back and forth, repeatedly banging it against the side.

Actual swaddling never really worked as he doesn't like having his arms and legs restricted but he had been sleeping 7.30-7.30 from 4 weeks old until 3 weeks ago and now I am getting about 2 hours sleep spread out across the night.

I am tired! 😴

urgh that sounds bad. Being currently in the process of stopping 4mo being swaddled, my first thought was that I wouldn't try starting something at this point that you'll have to stop. However from their website it looks like you don't need to stop, though I'm not sure how long before they'd object!

Other things to try in the meantime while you ask others/ order one could be a grobag to stop the legs problem, or sleeping in a travel cot (loads of space, soft sides, no bars)
Good luck!

IWouldLikeToKnow · 01/08/2018 05:07

I read somewhere before that when babies are learning and perfecting new skills they practice a lot in their sleep. This is why he is moving about and getting tangled. A grobag will help to a certain extent, or just let him at he. He'll learn the skill and then be able to correct himself. I think if he wants to roll about and this restricts him then he's going to fight it anyway.
To be fair, getting 12 hrs sleep a night at this stage is amazing and unusual.

Poodles1980 · 01/08/2018 05:33

You can get breathable mesh cot bumpers. Unlike fabric bumpers they are safe if baby gets stuck against them. We had them for our last baby and they were a godsend for stopping the leg out the side of the bars situation.
Are you using a sleeping bag or growbag?

Fighternotalover · 01/08/2018 08:34

I know the 12 hours was amazing, not expecting that back as I know how lucky we were! Just more than 10 mins at a time would be lovely!

We had been using a grobag but it is too hot here at the mo (our bedroom hasn't got below 24° for about 2 months). I've heard you can get some made of muslin though so I may have a look for them.

Thank you!
