Aibu to not understand why people drive like this?

Why the fuck do people drive like this?

  1. It’s rush hour. You’re driving your lorry. Fine, you need to get places too. You are going 40 on a 60 road. Fine, your engine can’t manage the hills. The unreasonable bit: there is a queue behind you going back 5 fucking miles. You know no one can overtake as it is a narrow road with blind corners and rises.

There are places he can pull over. If he did that every five miles or so he wouldn’t be responsible for adding 15 minutes to the journeys of 50 people. But HE would be 5 minutes later so no way, just cause a fucking traffic jam.

At least twice a week.

  1. Four lane motorway.
Lane closest to the hard shoulder: Slow moving truck going 55 or whatever. Fine. Lane 2. Another lorry trying to overtake the slow one. It takes a while to build up speed so it is going about 60. Third lane: someone who doesn’t want to be behind trucks. Going 60.

Fast lane: I know it’s not meant to be the ‘fast lane’ but face it, it is. Someone going 65. Behind them someone going 60.
Behind them someone trying to keep distance so going 57.

So between them four selfish twats manage to clog up the whole fucking motorway and cause a traffic jam. And this happens every fucking day.

When you overtake (and continue at a cruising speed of 70 ) the road is clear. The whole traffic jam was caused by a truck that wanted to overtake, a twat who didn’t want to go behind a truck but also did not want to go above 60, then the third dick who wanted to be in the fast lane but to go about 65.

Those three selfish people inconvenienced dozens, even hundreds.

Ffs.

Aibu to hate those people?

I suggest that you read up on speed limits for lorries before ranting at them doing the legal speed limit for lorries 40 on a 60 Road or 60 on the motorway. Smile

tsonlyme · 01/08/2018 06:37

Given that it’s New Zealand do those signs have Gandalf on them?

Celestie · 01/08/2018 06:45

"You shall not pass!!!"

adaline · 01/08/2018 06:50

Most mornings I encounter tractors or wagons on the road (narrow windy A roads) and the vast, vast majority pull over when it's safe to allow people to pass them. It's the cars that pootle along and ignore the queue building behind them (most of these roads are too dangerous to overtake on) that frustrate me.

There are passing places at least once a mile on my journey in and the amount of cars that ignore them is ridiculous. It's like they're too proud to admit they're holding up traffic so they just ignore the building queue behind them and carry on completely oblivious!

snowsun · 01/08/2018 06:50

The time difference on your journey between driving at 65 and 70 miles an hour is tiny.

Lorries would be even slower if pulling off on a hill.

People being wound up causes dangerous driving.

Chill out. You know it happens. Leave five minutes earlier. Sorted.

adaline · 01/08/2018 06:54

People aren't talking about 65mph in a 70 though. They're talking about people who drive at 25-40mph in a 60 and who refuse to pull in and allow traffic to pass (which the Highway Code states you should do).

I learnt to drive on those roads and often pulled in to allow people to pass me. It's just basic manners and consideration to pull over if you're holding other people up.

NotMeNoNo · 01/08/2018 07:09

"Slow moving vehicles" are tractors, exceptional loads etc, not normal HGVs doing their legal speed.

Correct use of lanes on motorways is a problem and highways England do run campaigns. Some two lane motorways do have a HGV over taking ban in peak times. But in the end they are road users trying to get somewhere too.

NerrSnerr · 01/08/2018 07:12

There are so many people who don't seem to know how to drive on the motorway. People tailgating, not just those going fast trying to get by. People who are up the arses of lorries with no view of the road ahead. If the lorry stops suddenly they'll kill themselves. I suspect some of these are in the 'it's a target not a goal' brigade as they're going 60 but don't realise that speed isn't the only dangerous factor.

Fatbelliedgirl · 01/08/2018 07:18

The New Forest area is notorious for people driving at way above the 40 speed limit with no regard for the animals. And on roads away from the forest, driving at 40 in a 60. Normally old, local people who think they're the best driver on the road. There are also a LOT of aggressive impatient drivers around that way, especially Southampton and the dreaded M27.

Faithless12 · 01/08/2018 07:20

Yabu. There is no way the third person would need to do 57 to maintain distance. They may have slowed to 57 as they were getting too close to the person in front. However one the distance is right to maintain it they’d need to match the person in front. You haven’t said what the other two lanes are like. I’ve overtaken in the third lane at 60 because the whole motorway was slow and I couldn’t go any faster as there was someone ahead of me. One of the biggest issues we have is middle lane hoggers. I see people pull straight into the middle lane as soon as they get onto the motorway. Some even sit there doing 57 while people in the first lane are doing 65. Thereby causing people to cut through three lanes to overtake them to then go back through three lanes to get back to the first lane which is clear.

OliviaStabler · 01/08/2018 07:20

Sounds like you drive on the M4. Lorries are a huge pain when it is busy.

Passmethecrisps · 01/08/2018 07:29

I am not sure about the specific examples in the OP but other people have mentioned some of my driving bugbears

The constant 40 mph. Clear road - 40mph. Small village at school bus time - 40mph
People who overtake on motorways but don’t want to go over 70 so crawl past whatever they are overtaking which is travelling at 68 mph. I know I am unreasonable in that one but I still find it annoying
Middle lane hoggers
People who overtake into the side of passing vehicles on the motorway.

And I don’t know about this one - when pulling over to allow an emergency vehicle to pass, the traffic behind (which has also pulled over) don’t allow you to filter back in leaving you stuck at the side of the road. This happened to me yesterday and has happened before. It just seems rude to me when you know that car ahead has pulled over and needs to restart their journey.

Lauren83 · 01/08/2018 07:32

I live next to a motorway that you join straight on the fast lane and I HATE it, I immediately try to move into the middle lane but people sit on your shoulder not allowing you to move over and someone's always well up your arse in the fast lane cleary seeing you are driving at 70 and indicating to move over, it stresses me out every morning

Passmethecrisps · 01/08/2018 07:35

lauren I have occasionally driven on a motorway which has fast lane merging and it seems terrifying! I have never had to come from that side thankfully but it seems a bizarre piece of road planning

HarryPotterISreal · 01/08/2018 07:45

So to those saying IABU:

This morning on the motorway I went 58 for most of the way for the reasons described above. The limit is 70.

Is this reasonable?

MrsSnootyPants2018 · 01/08/2018 07:49

My biggest hate is people who drive at 50/60 on the motorway. Especially the 50 drivers

I once encountered someone doing 40 on the motorway. It just slows the whole process down for everyone for no reason.

Sirzy · 01/08/2018 07:51

So because of traffic you had to slow down. Shit happens!

barleyfive · 01/08/2018 07:54

YANBU, it is annoying, even if in the case of the lorries there is a reason. Lots of the roads around here are unsuitable for overtaking, and when the road conditions are good and cars are doing 35 in a 60 it is so irritating, and not safe- as people try dangerous overtakes. This is more or less doubling the travel time for people, for no good reason.

Bibesia · 01/08/2018 08:31

It's pointless building up hatred in this way - it won't achieve anything other than increasing your own stress. Over time I've learnt that, when driving, there is simply no point in getting worked up about something you can't change. It's so relaxing; I no longer get annoyed if someone cuts me up or cuts into the queue ahead of me, I don't worry if I get stuck behind a bicycle, and in fact I find that, when I don't stress about how quickly I'm travelling, generally it makes little difference to the length of my journeys.

Kingkiller · 01/08/2018 08:39

YABU
The roads are crowded and we all have to negotiate our space with other motorists. Yes, some of them drive in an annoying and selfish manner, but safety is the most important thing.

^ This.

So to those saying IABU: This morning on the motorway I went 58 for most of the way for the reasons described above. The limit is 70. Is this reasonable?

Yes. Why would you necessarily expect to be managing to go at the speed limit on a busy road? Overtake where safe. Otherwise drive safely behind the person in front of you, without getting your knickers in a twist or thinking your journey is more important than anyone else's.

Firesuit · 01/08/2018 09:05

So because of traffic you had to slow down. Shit happens!

No, not because of traffic. Traffic would be if every lane was full for as far as you can see. That's not the same thing as four vehicles travelling side-by-side well under the speed limit with empty road ahead of them.

Celestie · 01/08/2018 09:07

Perhaps the solution is that lorries have to stay in the 'slow lane' and have a set speed limit that they shouldn't go below/above.

Celestie · 01/08/2018 09:09

Does anyone know if it's actually illegal to drive at say 30mph in a 50mph zone? I remember someone I know saying they got pulled over by the police for driving too slowly... Hmm

Sirzy · 01/08/2018 09:11

And if the ‘slow lane’ is full of lorries with them not being allowed to move how would anyone actually get into the motorway? Especially other lorries!

glasserator · 01/08/2018 09:14

People who do 30 in a 40 then do 40 in a 30 do my head in!
