Do people agree with the rest of the cast supporting James Gunn's rehiring?

When I first read the news today, I thought that seeing as the tweets were so long ago, and they haven't said what they are, they can't have been that bad, etc, but after reading the article below, and now knowing what the tweets were about, I think I'm really shocked that they're supporting him. I was certainly disgusted by the tweets and didn't find them at all funny. Am I being prude?

Don't know if IABU though. What do you think?

I read that the tweets were addressed when he was hired as they predated his hiring in the role.

I think it’s a slippery slope whereby things you have done previously will continue to follow you forever. If the tweets were a new occurrence then firing or disciplining him would have fine but the way in which this has been handled is wrong.

I think it only right he should be reinstated.

IAmtheOompahLoompah · 31/07/2018 13:35

He says himself in the link you included that he doesn’t find them at all funny either. Have you read it?

Alaaya · 31/07/2018 13:36

Disney knew about the tweets when they hired him. He apologised for them years ago. People have to be able to change and grow. The alternative is too depressing for words.

ScienceIsTruth · 31/07/2018 13:44

See that was, and always as been, my opinion on things like that. I gate this mob mentality we have nowadays and 10 years is a long time, and I'm sure we've all said stupid things when we were young, that we now cringe at.

In a way, it's one of the bad things about the internet, because any mistakes will then follow you forever, and I do think ppl can change.

I was just really shocked by the content of the tweets.

I think he should be re-instated and totally agree with the statement the rest of the cast released.

ScienceIsTruth · 31/07/2018 13:47

I didn't know that they already knew about the tweets when they hired him, I only caught the news this morning, and so looked up what the tweets were.

In that case, I don't think they should've sacked him now just because of pressure from elsewhere. I'm still very uncomfortable with the content of the tweets though.

Yes, I did read the article, and read that he says he isn't the same person he was then, and that he'd only tweeted them for the shock value.

I was all for fogive and forget. It's just the actual tweets made me think twice, as IMO they're pretty dreadful, so I just wanted other people's opinions on the matter.

They were tweeted nearly ten years ago and he has apologised for their content more than once including a written/public apology way back in 2012 where he basically said that he made some ill-thought and ignorant comments that were not at all funny and that he deeply regrets them but has since learned/grown. Given that his behaviour and reputation since then have proven that he really has changed, I think Disney have been incredibly heavy handed.

Schroedingerscatagain · 31/07/2018 14:14

If convictions in law are allowed to be spent, why on earth given he has previously apologised and Disney knew before hiring him is he still being punished for this

If a criminal is rehabilitated and able to move on then why can’t he be able to move on

YouCantStopTheSignal · 31/07/2018 14:16

Have you looked at the background of Mike Cernovich, the man who started all of this controversy? He's built a career on publically destroying anyone who disagrees with his views or those of his hero, Donald Trump. He is a grade-A nob who holds abhorrent views on rape (and has also been charged with rape at one point but it was later reduced to assault), thinks diversity is akin to white genocide, believes immigrants should be IQ tested, he is an MRA with a truly disgusting attitude towards women, he wrote a guide on how to avoid "false" rape accusations which included advice such as covertly film your sexual encounters, "take the whore out to breakfast afterwards", and "if the police call, don’t answer", he advocates a dating technique called "if in doubt, whip it out" and blogged about an encounter in which he attempted to force his penis into the hand of an unwilling woman to try and convince her to have sex with him, and he's currently under investigation by the police for falsifying documents in order to make a false claim of sexual misconduct against a US senator.

James Gunn made some offensive tweets nearly a decade ago, has publically apologised, and has done nothing if the sort since.

ScienceIsTruth · 31/07/2018 14:22

So my first instinct was right, then? They've made a fuss of nothing, should stop being beholden to mob 'think', and should rehire him. His apology did sound sincere, in the article that I've read.

I don't really follow the news so did not know that this had come out before, and I only did a very quick Google this morning, and found the tweets in the very first article that I looked at (the one I've linked to).

I agree that people can change though, and I don't like this constant digging up of past behaviour that seems to go on now.

Thanks for all the opinions Smile

Internet blind item, who knows how true? Some comments are interesting:

blind

YouCantStopTheSignal · 31/07/2018 14:31

Considering it's a blind item and the person leading the campaign against Gunn has a reputation for orchestrating accusations of paedophilia using techniques including the planting of blind gossip items, I'd take it with a huge pinch of salt.

implantsandaDyson · 31/07/2018 14:34

I'm not sure I'd be campaigning to work with him to be honest. I wasn't sure to begin with and then I reread the initial tweets, I first read them a few days ago. Just no, I wouldn't want to work with anyone who had initially typed those comments no matter how "edgy" they thought they were.

I'm not sure about the sacking but there's no fucking way I'd be backing him. There's always a line in the sand for me and he has well hurled himself over it.

kenandbarbie · 31/07/2018 14:36

I agree with the cast. His tweets are distasteful but I think the key thing here is he didn't really believe in paedophilia, he was trying to make a purposefully shocking joke. It was ten years ago, he has apologized and explained and they knew before they hired him.

Contrasting to Roseanne, who really is racist and who's tweets were made currently.

AngelsSins · 31/07/2018 15:51

implants; agree, I wouldn’t be campaigning to get him his job back, that’s for sure.

IAmtheOompahLoompah · 31/07/2018 16:43

Yeah I’m also not a fan of that sort of “joke” and I wouldn’t be coming out in his defence - but I try to think of it more as something he said or wrote ten years ago. The internet makes everything seem so immediate. Try to think of it more as a yellowing press cutting or a standup routine given in dated clothes and haircut. It’s still distasteful and unfunny (to say the least) but coupled with his apology and explanation it is easier to accept.

I can assure you I’m no apologist for bad behaviour, but I can’t see what is to be gained by demonising him.
