9 - 9.30 leaf blower and lawnmower

Just that really. Is it too late? Bloody annoyed me but not sure if I should complain. It is difficult as not a direct neighbour,

Why would you worry about them? They usually work hard to pay the mortgage, how dare the neighbours dictate how and when they work on their house?!

FuzzyCustard · 31/07/2018 19:40

I'd far sooner hear a lawnmower at that time than the shouty shrieky children on our road!

adaline · 31/07/2018 19:48

I worry about people who say "It's their garden" etc

Why? 9pm isn't late! I don't get back from work until gone 7pm for example, by the time I've had dinner and a sit down I don't have time to start doing anything until 9-ish. Luckily DP is home from 5 and has time to do all the noisy activities everyone complains about on here Grin

DesignStatement · 31/07/2018 19:54

Can't see 9 pm being too late. Most people are still up at that time watching TV. It's been too hot to work on the garden before then. 6 am would be unreasonable as most people are asleep.
I'd rather a lawnmower making its steady sound than shrieking kids and barking dogs any day.
If these stifling summers continue over the years we need to get used to changing patterns of behaviour.

BMW6 · 31/07/2018 19:57

Sorry, I think YABU. After 10 pm would be pushing it, after 11 definitely not on.

NotSoRandom · 31/07/2018 20:09

"how dare the neighbours dictate how and when they work on their house" Heaven forbid considering someone else!

Amanduh · 31/07/2018 20:10

Hmm. I think it’s inconsiderate but it’s not illegal

Kismett · 31/07/2018 20:21

Another household here where we are lucky if we get the opportunity for chores before 9PM. Saving it for the weekend doesn’t always work because chances are we need to be somewhere, have a list of other chores to do, or it’s been raining.

People have different lifestyles and we try to be accommodating, but otherwise we’d happily be in the garden chatting until midnight.

ForalltheSaints · 31/07/2018 20:23

I'd think it OK, and in a few weeks time it will be earlier as it will be dark then.

Much better than a reversing dustcart at 0455 last Friday (I have complained to the council about that).

Goth237 · 31/07/2018 21:23

YABU. It's not late, it's summer and it's still light.

MollysMummy2010 · 31/07/2018 21:53

Um...its full dark here now and was dark at 9.30 last night? Lovely and quiet tonight though and I didn't say anything as it is unusual. I know it is the holidays but my daughter is still on a term time schedule as at holiday club with an 8am start so no late night child noise from us and no trampoline! Off next week though so they may well be complaining about us!!

I say this as a former shift worker, not every one is still up at 9pm and not every one is still in bed at 6am.

If it bothers you that much, go and ask them if they can stop. You're entitled to ask politely.

I live in an area where the neighbours are out scrapping in the road until all hours. Gardening at 9pm is tame.

Doobigetta · 31/07/2018 22:28

Unreasonable for anyone to use a leaf blower at any time, ever. Those things should be banned, the racket they make is so horrendous.

Whereismumhiding2 · 31/07/2018 22:55

For an AIBU this is tame though. It's people doing their lawns /gardens at a not unreasonably late time. Pushing after 10:30pm would be different or 6am in the morning!
So OP asked aibu to complain, and the mostly unanimous answer was yes.

echt · 31/07/2018 22:59

9.30 is late, summer or not.

Where I am the cut-off for any such noise is 8.00. all year round, though they'd be mowing in the dark in winter!

Leafblowers are the work of the devil.

Whereismumhiding2 · 31/07/2018 23:08

Is that in your local press /bylaws @acht?

I'm pretty sure that you'd be the only town with that restructive rule if true!

Whereismumhiding2 · 31/07/2018 23:09

*restrictive

Imustbemad00 · 31/07/2018 23:19

I think 9pm is really quite rude to be doing noisy things. It would annoy me but if it was a one off I probably wouldn’t say anything. I guess it’s not late for some people, but everybody should be respectful of people’s dofferent routines and it’s sirely not hard to understand that 9pm is quite late to a lot of people.
I have heard people doing it at 8am though, and whilst it doesn’t bother me, I wouldn’t do it that early myself.

Quite lucky here, there’s sort of an unspoken rule about doing noisy things after 6:30/7pm stuff like drilling, hammering, and I suppose lawn mowing too.

victoriaspongecake · 31/07/2018 23:21

yabu, we need to make the most of the lighter summer nights.

user1472651064 · 01/08/2018 10:40

victoriaspongecake but what if my idea of "making the most of the lighter summer nights" is enjoying sitting in the garden, or in the house with the windows open and not having some inconsiderate person ruining it?

Blobby10 · 01/08/2018 13:15

I mowed my grass last night at 7pm and felt guilty!! No way would I be using electrical or petrol garden tools at 9pm - but when they were younger, my children were all in bed around 7-7.30 (they got up at 5am most mornings) so everything in our house was quiet.

MereDintofPandiculation · 01/08/2018 13:50

What time would be good? Early morning when people are having lie ins? Mid morning when people are wanting to do a spot of quite weeding? when people are enjoying lunch int their garden? Afternoon, when people are wanting to relax in their gardens or play with their children? When people are enjoying an evening meal in the garden? Or later when they are relaxing in the cool of the evening or their children are trying to sleep?

There's no good time. All you can do is try and get it over with as quickly as possible. After dark would probably be unreasonable!

IceCreamFace · 01/08/2018 13:52

I would probably wait a little while myself (not that I even have a leaf blower) but I don't think you can complain 9am is fair game for day time noise.

IceCreamFace · 01/08/2018 13:54

Oh sorry misread that as 9am! I do think 9pm is a bit inconsiderate as most young kids will be in bed - you can certainly ask them not to if they do it often but I don't think you can take it any further than that. My DS stays up late in the summer but I wouldn't let him make noise in the garden at 9pm.
