posting for traffic - threadworms

We use reusable nappies for my two year old - this afternoon discovered one that my mum had sent home with a poo in it that had been sitting around for 4 days - grim.

Went to deal with it and found it crawling with small, white worms - classic tapeworms - first sign I've ever seen of them. No symptoms from dd, never seen any in any of the nappies I've changed since.

Are they definitely threadworms or could this be maggots or something hatching because poo was sitting at room temperature for so long? Can't imagine mum would not have noticed the worms when changing her - can the eggs hatch outside the body? I mean, could it have just been eggs excreted and in the 4 days since they've hatched and somehow stayed alive?

Eww eww www! Sorry for the gross!!!

Hold your horses. Bin the nappy. It's irrelevant. Examine his next poo. You ask if it was threadworms and then said it was a typical tapeworm. Tapeworms come in segments and don't crawl about. Threadworms are skinny. If there are any worms, go to the chemist and describe them and get the medicine. Threadworms are very common in toddlers

Owletterocks · 30/07/2018 18:48

Threadworm are very thin, maggots are thicker so should be easy to tell the difference between the 2. I didn’t think that worms could survive that long outside of the body

TotHappy · 30/07/2018 19:00

Sorry, tapeworms was a typo.

I've never seen a confirmed threadworm - i googled it and the works poked similar - but they also looked not dissimilar to maggots which i had once in a bin - Altho possibly a bit longer?

These worms were thicker than a piece of thread, more like a grain of rice but a bit longer and they were moving, oh God they were moving.

If i check the next nappy, will i definitely see threadworms if she has threadworms? Do they always come out?

*worms looked not poked

Very common, get tablets from chemist (although check for an age limit). Speak to your pharmacist (take photo if there are more)

callmeadoctor · 30/07/2018 19:04

But I imagine its because the nappy was left out (grim)

Hadalifeonce · 30/07/2018 19:05

You can also see worms around the anus, not just in poo. If you do see them, the pharmacist will tell you to treat the whole family.

NoTeaNoShadeNoPinkLemonade · 30/07/2018 19:26

sound like what I saw in my cats food bowl.
check next poos (both dcs)

gamerchick · 30/07/2018 19:29

Well houseflies hatch in shit. The maggots aren't that big when first hatched and if the nappy has been sitting around in heat for days I wouldn't automatically think threadworms.

Personally I worm my kids regular anyway. If you're not sure then it won't do any harm.

Please dont post a photo though.Grin

Deshasafraisy · 30/07/2018 19:35

If they were like rice then they were maggots. Keep on eye on his poo. They are active at night and crawl out to lay eggs so a torch on the bum while he’s asleep and you should see them.

Bambamber · 30/07/2018 19:38

They sound more like maggots. If you haven't seen any since I think you may be alright. Can sometimes see the worm coming out the bum at night or are more likely to see them in poo at night as that s when they're most active

TotHappy · 30/07/2018 19:48

gamer diagram? Grin

No way would i get away with peeling my daughters pajamas and nappy down at night to look at he bum, she'd be up and at em!

(I only have one child btw, not sure where this extra one crept in)

They definately sound like maggots!
If the poo filled nappy has been hanging around for a few days, then a bluebottle has laid eggs on it and they have hatched.
Definately not threadworms!
Bin the nappy and stop panicking!

Viebienremplie · 30/07/2018 20:11

Why is your DM returning poo to you? Our nursery did this once when DS was potty training. It made me mad

TotHappy · 30/07/2018 20:34

Yeah, i hate it too but i cant insist. I can send her in disposables to Granny's i suppose

Before bed tomorrow can you get her to hold her ankles and bend over naked, have a good look. But if she isn't itching I'd assume just maggots Envy

NotAsGreenAsCabbageLooking · 30/07/2018 20:41

🤢🤢🤢

My kids have had thread worms before... it’s the grossest thing I have ever experienced. The bloody school sends worm letters almost as often as the nit letter.

You can get a liquid to take. You’re making me want to dose up my family just thinking of them 😩😩

HonkyWonkWoman · 30/07/2018 20:42

Not threadworms!!!!!!!!

SuperMumTum · 30/07/2018 20:49

My kids get worms pretty regularly, from school I presume. I don't even bother checking poos or bums. If one if them has a seriously itchy bum at bedtime everyone gets a dose of wormer and all the sheets and towels get hot washed. No biggy.

What you are describing are maggots though. Have a word with your mum about flushing poos and rinsing nappies.

TotHappy · 08/08/2018 20:07

Ok... Update for those of you that just love worms and more advice needed please.

So those wise posters were right - the little beasties I saw in the nappy were not threadworms. I know this because she does HAVE threadworms Envy we gave her a wormer on the same night I posted this and have been seeing them coming out dead (or at least not moving) since. Hot washed bedding and cuddles etc.
Now, tonight, imagine my horror to see a worm round her bum as I was wiping her! I think it was moving. How can she have them again so fast? In the corresponding nappy, I saw threads, but no movement. Is it possible she had such a severe infestation that one tablet didn't kill them all?! Will it do her any harm to give another tablet now? HOW CAN I GET RID OF THESE LITTLE BASTARD PARASITES FROM MY DAUGHTER'S ARSE??!!

Tia

My neighbour really struggled to get rid of them when her daughter had them. She stopped her DD playing in the sandpit at nursery and they finally went. Tablets are expensive - if is a struggle you can get a prescription from GP

Jessiemay88 · 08/08/2018 20:17

Dont panic. The doctor normally advises a second dose after 2 weeks. The medicine kills live worms and not eggs so the eggs that were in her gut during first treatment are hatching. You also often need a third round 2weeks further along. However just to be sure (since i dunno what youv been prescribed) ring them to confirm

TotHappy · 08/08/2018 20:51

It's Ovex.
It's only been one week though!
