Neighbours don't want our DC playing together

A few weeks ago some new neighbours moved in, a women with 4 DC. She has twins that are around the same age as 6 year old DS so they quickly became friends. I hadn't really spoken to their mum much until the other day, i had said hi a few times though. It was raining quite a bit the other day, DS was bored and wanted to ask the neighbours kids if they wanted to come over to play, i eventually gave in and walked over with him. DS politely asked and she replied with "I don't want my kids near you lot" and slammed the door. This upset DS and i think if she had a problem with us she didn't need to say it infront of him. Since then she's told her DC off if they speak to DS. Then yesterday I could hear her complaining loudly about her neighbours whilst i was in the garden

I'd go round and ask what the issue is

MangoApplePear · 30/07/2018 15:09

That’s awful! Is there a back story? Is there a lot of noise or swearing coming ftom your place that could have created a bad impression?

Pengggwn · 30/07/2018 15:10

Well, it isn't the kindest thing to say to a child, but it sounds very unlikely to have come from nowhere.

MorningCuppa · 30/07/2018 15:11

Blimey that sounds quite extreme and your right she shouldn't have said that in front of your ds, neighbours can be strange.

NaomiNagata · 30/07/2018 15:12

I've had to stop my kids playing with some other kid because of the behaviour of that kids parents, and the copy cat behaviour of the child. They weren't a pleasant family... And my kids would try to be polite but playing with them just isn't an option anymore for me to allow. So I have to wonder if she also has a reason to to take this step?

She should have been more tactful about it, but she must have her reasons.

PlateOfBiscuits · 30/07/2018 15:12

When you overheard her complaining what was she saying?

Do you have any idea what she could be upset about? Does your DS?

NanFlanders · 30/07/2018 15:15

How very strange! Could she have mistaken you for someone else if she's just moved in? If she was complaining loudly about 'the neighbours', could you hear the jist of her issue with you?

GlitteryFluff · 30/07/2018 15:17

I'd definitely ask if there was some kind of problem you're not aware of. Really odd behaviour.

Gingerninj · 30/07/2018 15:18

A lot of noise here but no swearing, I did "they never shut up" so the noise might be part of the issue but we're not riducolously loud. DS is very outgoing and energetic but he's friendly and polite

Have you got a pool next to your fence op?

MapleLeafRag · 30/07/2018 16:00

Or a trampoline?

KC225 · 30/07/2018 16:01

Have you seen big little lies? One of the twins blame the new boy for hurting another child.

I say this as the mother of twins.

What is she like with the other neighbours?

Ivorbig1 · 30/07/2018 16:01

You have had a lucky escape. She sounds the type to moan about you behind your back. Move on.

Gingerninj · 30/07/2018 16:31

By the sounds of it no one's really spoken to her yet. We do have a trampoline but it's not next to the fence

How awful :( sorry OP this would really upset me, I would try to catch this neighbour alone (hard when she has 4 DC) and ask what the problem is or maybe a polite note through the door explaining you don't know what you have done to offend? If I moved to a new area that's the last thing I would do!! Talk about alienating yourself and your kids. Hope u get to the bottom of it x
