What am I doing wrong?! ( blood sugar levels)

I did a fasting blood sugar test at home with a glucose meter and obtained a reading of 5.5 which is classified as being pre diabetic!!
I am very slim, 5'5 weighing 8 stones 2 with a bmi of 18.9.
I do have a serious sweet tooth and regularly eat chocolate and cake every day.
I am now going to cut down on my sugar consumption but has anyone any other ideas how I can reduce my sugar levels.
Apart from eating lots of cake, I think my diet isn't too bad but maybe I am wrong?
Breakfast - one cup of coffee, no sugar plus one banana.
Lunch - fruit and vegetables and water
Dinner - large portion of pasta / curry / fish etc.
Cake is eaten after dinner daily.
Will now stop the cake but should I be cutting down on all carbs at dinner even though I am eating v little during the day?

Found this useful for checking carbs www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/20-50-how-much

Definitely no cake on here user1471556443 ! I'm like you - although I eat a more varied diet than you I also enjoy something 'sweet' after supper. Now eating plain greek yoghurt with berries or a vanilla flavoured one to ease myself off.

I enjoy a square or two of good dark (82%) chocolate after dinner or a nice glass of red wine.

Nuts - my go to are almonds. But they are all a good source of fats. Walnuts I buy frequently too.

Seeds I eat are pumpkin, sunflower, linseed and chia. Love toasted pinenuts on salads.

Thanks Fantail I'll have to change my French DP's eating plans as he enjoys cooking so I don't get let into the kitchen much. His meals are very traditional French ones and include a lot of potatoes. Money is also tight but cheese (and wine) is always available. I drink very little wine. The most difficult time is going out to eat although I have stopped taking dessert.

I go out for dinner all the time. There’s always something I can eat.

You have a choice about what you can eat still. Small changes now ensure that you can keep that choice. There’s no cure or hope of reversing T1 diabetes.

Just ask DP to cook double green veg for you and don’t eat the potatoes (or eat half the potatoes). Or challenge him to adapt a traditional recipe.

I should say that I’m a solo Mum. I have no doubt that if I was still with my ex when I changed my diet that I wouldn’t have done so well.

Thanks again fantail hope you keep well

As a UK t1 they would combust if my a1c was 32.
Currently it is 43 and they didn’t like that. They prefer it above 50 and it is ‘nice and safe’ Hmm otherwise they think you must be having loads of hypos, which I am not!

5.5 is borderline OP but you cannot judge on a single one off reading. Personally I don’t believe fastings of that level to be that unusual in the non-diabetic community.

I think it’s a bit different for me as I was only diagnosed a couple of years ago and I’m having a long honeymoon. In part because of my low carb diet.

With all the improvements in technology to help with control, I think that if possible we should aim lower than 50! 43 is amazing!!
