Ive done a patch test for live xxl colour lightner. Im planning to dye my dark brown hair orange so i have to pre lighten

Ive put the solution on my inner elbow and its gone bright red. It isnt sore or itchy or anything but it looks v red.

Is that an allergic reaction?

Sorry to sound stupid! Ive been dying my hair years. Was blonde all my teens and used to put pure peroxide on it! Then ginger, blonde, blue, black and now brown.

I've never done a patch test... is it a reaction?

Yes, it's a reaction. Sorry.

TeaAndNoSympathy · 28/07/2018 22:08

Yes it is.

PrincessoftheSea · 28/07/2018 22:11

Yes it is. For those allergic to hair dye I recommend Natural Colour Works in Soho London

Foodylicious · 28/07/2018 22:14

Yep. It's common for it to cone up pink to start with then may blister over the next 24-48hrs.
Dont risk it.

Think with allergic reactions is that they can get worse.
One can be a mild local reaction, the next one could be anaphylaxis

TrudeauGirl · 28/07/2018 22:16

Lucky you did a patch test. Don't risk it, it certainly seems to irritate your skin and more may be worse.

gamerchick · 28/07/2018 22:16

It is a reaction, it looks mild but could get worse I think, I don't think I would chance it.

I feel for you, I steel myself doing the patch test with all the prayers to the hairgod each time.

TrudeauGirl · 28/07/2018 22:17

I'm loosy goosy with patch tests, now I think I'll be safe and do one every time.

Sorry about your hair dye :-(

Glumglowworm · 28/07/2018 22:20

Yes it’s a reaction so you shouldn’t use the dye unfortunately

I’ve been there too. It’s very frustrating to have wasted money on dye you can’t use, but it’s not worth risking a severe reaction.

charliedontsurf · 28/07/2018 22:23

I have a PPD allergy that only appeared in my 20s after a good 10 years of regular dyeing. The patch test may not look too severe but don't be tempted to go ahead with the dye, as you can go from being a little allergic to a whole lot very quickly. Luckily my reaction did not result in anaphylaxis, but my body swelled up a lot, particularly my head and face, I was covered in a blistery rash for months all over my body and I had to cut my hair almost entirely off to rid myself of reacting to my own hair. It also took such a toll on my immune system that I ended up with recurrent tonsilitis for a couple of years after. Pretty crappy but at least you did the patch test so have saved yourself the potential misery!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 28/07/2018 22:23

I've never done a patch test (even though I know I should!).

Yours def looks like a reaction.

I can't use a host of the available dyes as they make me itch. Furiously itch for several hours, which starts a couple of hours after dying my hair. I'm left with very few brands I can use - in fact I think one - and last time I even itched a little bit with that brand.

So reactions can definitely come on when you didn't have one previously. I'm going to have to embrace the grey soon!

Loraline · 28/07/2018 22:25

Beauty writer Sali Hughes had a severe allergic reaction to hair dye after years of using it. Can be very serious out of nowhere. Definitely don't risk it.

She wrote about it. I'll see if I can find link.

Flowersonthewall · 28/07/2018 22:33

Bloody hell that's scary! I know that articles 7 years old now so have hair dyes moved on? Is there any alternative to ppd?

Uhuhhoney · 28/07/2018 23:02

Thanks everyone. Had loads of friends say that its meant to be painful bleaching on dark hair! Have washed it off and no longer red.

Going to salon to see if they can help. Have bright ginger roots and dark ends Sad

Yes, be super careful. A girl I know nearly died because of a bonkers reaction, she was extremely sick.

loubeylou68smellsofreindeerpoo · 28/07/2018 23:23

Yes it's a positive reaction. You can still achieve what you want by lightening with bleach then using a henna. But still patch test with the henna first (should be pure henna)
Also be careful of tattoos etc

loubeylou68smellsofreindeerpoo · 28/07/2018 23:24

You don't need to bleach very light so shouldn't be painful
