A pathetic tiff!

Just had a little tiff with DP. It's DD's 2nd birthday and she's had some money from a few people. I casually said I was thinking of opening an account for DD's money so we can save it for when she needs a new toy etc.

DP has turned around and hesitated saying money is really tight atm and we might need it. I said no way, that's DD's money and I don't want to get into a habit of using it. We've had a slight tiff but surely I'm not BU? We're getting married so things are a bit tight but we're not strapped for cash!

I don't like the idea of keeping DD's money 'just in case we need it and pay it back'.

Is he her father?

WorraLiberty · 28/07/2018 21:46

YANBU

Borrowing your kid's money is the sort of thing you do if money is properly tight...like overdue rent or not being able to eat.

Not to fund a wedding ffs.

Seniorschoolmum · 28/07/2018 21:46

YAnbu. The people who gave your dd that money, gave it to her, not to your dp. Legally if he took it, that would be theft and very difficult to defend.
I suggest you open a junior ISA or similar and put it out of reach.

gamerchick · 28/07/2018 21:46

Open her account, it'll come in handy for future birthdays.

It's not money just to be absorbed into the house, just because there is a wedding to pay for.

TaleasoldasTimee · 28/07/2018 21:48

Yes he's her father and there's no way he'd just take it. I agree it's her money and we shouldn't be touching it! I'm definitely going to open an account, it makes life easier all round.

Open that account!

feliciabirthgiver · 28/07/2018 21:51

Of course you put it in an account.

Theweasleytwins · 28/07/2018 21:57

My dt have an account they can withdraw from when they are 18

They also have a current account which their child benefit gets paid into. We use that for things like car seats and other essentials for them.

My DH was fired so we had to borrow some as a last resort for the mortgage- paying it back next month and felt terrible doing it

MrsDeanWinchester75 · 28/07/2018 22:03

Yes put it in an account, it's her money not his.

I'd be annoyed if I gave a child money and found out the parents had spent it on themselves.
