To be creeped out by being dead-birded

I think someone is, on purpose, putting dead birds on our front step or right next to it. That's weird, right...? Why the fuck would anyone be doing that? Or is just a coincident, and I'm paranoid?

I've found a dead white pigeon/dove a another bird of indefinite species there before, but have put it down to animals (the birds have clearly not just dropped dead on the spot, although no sign of cat attack, or feathers on the ground, either). I've just bagged and binned them and not thought anything of it.

Today I'm wondering... We went out for less than an hour, and there was no bird when we left. Came back to an extremely dead crow right in the middle of the short garden path, near our door, looking like it's been placed there. Clearly been dead for a good while, and someone or something has moved it there while we were gone. WTF?

Do animals do this kind of stuff? It would seem weird to me, as it's always on the same place. We don't have a cat we can blame, either.

I really kind of hope I'm being paranoid. We don't have any issues with anyone in the neighbourhood, as far as I know! Everyone is perfectly nice, and most won't even know I'm immigrant, if they're the type to care about stuff like that... We're not local, but have been living here for years without any issues.

You need cctv! It’s the only way you’ll find out.

ManicStreetTeacher · 28/07/2018 13:38

Could be a cat. They like to bring "presents", particularly if you've been kind/fed them. Yuck, I know.

MissionItsPossible · 28/07/2018 13:38

CCTV

Notmyrealname85 · 28/07/2018 13:39

Creepy!! Any electrical lines nearby or maybe they’re flying into your windows? Any birds of prey near you (in case of them fighting with these other birds)?

WhyBirds · 28/07/2018 13:40

No local cat that we've been fraternising with. Obviously there are cats in the neighbourhood, though, but we've not been feeding them or paying much attention.

I guess I need to look into cctv :(

Or a cheap wildlife camera. Then you can hide it in the trees/bushes (if you have any). I use one to see who comes to our front door.

WhyBirds · 28/07/2018 13:43

Any electrical lines nearby or maybe they’re flying into your windows?

Surely they would then look freshly dead? This crown was partly decomposed to the bone, as was the previous bird. The pigeon/dove was very bloody, so could have been an attack by something - although no feathers around it, so it didn't look like it had been killed on the spot.

My first thought was a cat. Perhaps it gets shouted at when it takes it home so leaves it for you?

AimlesslyPurposeful · 28/07/2018 13:44

Oh yes, one of those doorbell cameras would do the trick.

claraschu · 28/07/2018 13:46

This doesn't sound like a cat to me.

Cleaningthefours · 28/07/2018 13:47

Some kind of animal.

BlancheM · 28/07/2018 13:48

It really is likely to be a cat wanting to impress you.
If it were a person doing it, they would need to be sure there would be no way of being caught in the act. If they had ways of knowing when you were out of the house, and they've got something against you, why not go the extra mile and post something through your door?
Ever mentioned you've got a fear of birds? Prank?

thisisannc · 28/07/2018 13:50

YANBU to be creeped out, no. I've had plenty of cats in my life and haven't known any to bring me long-dead animals. It's only ever been creatures they've (sadly) just killed themselves.

WhyBirds · 28/07/2018 13:52

There is a big fluffy cat that has been hanging out in my back garden semi-regularly, even though he takes off whenever I go out. I'd be much happier thinking it's him trying to be impressive, than a person. I didn't know cats to drag around already dead animals, though - I'd always thought they left you their fresh kills.

I'm not scared of birds, and the birds themselves don't creep me out too much, apart from yuk. They've all just been swiftly bagged and put in the bin.

Its incredibly windy in my area today, ive found next doors pizza box in our garden this morning Hmm
Could it be wind?
Is the bird dusty looking like its been dragged across the ground in the wind a bit?

PopeyeandOliveOil · 28/07/2018 13:53

thats creepy op u need cctv

WhyBirds · 28/07/2018 13:54

Not windy enough for dead birds to fly, no. We have a fence and a gate.

We had a cat that brought home already-dead 'finds'. He once brought home a fur trimmed child's boot!!

I think definitely cat trying to adopt you.

Aquamarine1029 · 28/07/2018 14:08

You have a feline admirer, I guarantee it. This is VERY common behaviour for cats. My first cat when I was a child did this ALL the time. To her, she was bringing us presents.

didyouseetheflaresinthesky · 28/07/2018 14:12

Probably Mr fluffy trying to adopt you.

WhyBirds · 28/07/2018 14:12

I don't think I want to invest in a wildlife camera for now... (it'd be hard to hide in our front garden, and it's already been too expensive a month). If birds keep coming, I'll definitely will, though. Even if it just the cat!

Good to hear this is something cats do. Some unknown animal has been leaving the occasional poo in the front garden at times, so maybe it's the same one. I assume it's a cat, as looks like cat poo. I had no idea cats did this! We have a doddery old indoor cat, whose never caught more than a moth, and back when we had outgoing cats, there was only the odd fresh mouse entrails on the porch...

You can get apps that record video when your phone camera detects movement. Is there a window nearby you could put your phone behind?

NEFink · 28/07/2018 14:20

If its very small smelly dark poo, it could be foxes?

WeirdAndPissedOff · 28/07/2018 14:20

Sounds like perhaps you have a cat or fox that frequents your front garden, then. I'd imagine they have left the birds behind?
