To be shaking in my boots at the thought of having a GA

I'm booked to have a procedure done under general anaesthetic. I've never had one before. Is it unreasonable to be this frightened?

I've had to GA. First one, I was laughing like mad before I drifted off. The anaesthetist asked me to tell him the colours of the rainbow and I couldn't. Second one was to repair my episiotomy, I'd had about 4 hours sleep in 48 thanks to my new born. I swear it was the best hour long nap I'd ever had.

I've got a latex allergy so get to go into surgery first when scheduled thank the Lord!! Although that was a few years ago now not sure they even use latex in hospitals anymore

YANBU to be scared, but honestly it’s not a big deal. It’s a strange sensation, in that one moment you’re in the prep room counting down from ten or reciting the alphabet, and the next thing you know you’re in the recovery room. It’s like no time passes, you just close your eyes and open them.

The only thing I wish id known is that you shouldn’t try to fight it when coming round. Just relax, go back to sleep for a little bit, chill out. I was mentally struggling against the fog and winding myself up. But even then I was annoyed and pissed off rather than scared!

YANBU, I’ve managed to get to the ripe old age of 39 without ever having one & the thought scares me shitless.

Stupid really as I’ve supported my 11 year old through 5 operations requiring GA & he’s been absolutely fine but I totally get where you’re coming from.

Good luck OP.

idream I get the shakes too - it’s sensitivity to adrenalin. I get the shakes whenever I’m nervous or excited (so embarassing on dates) Blush
or with my dentist who is gorgeous.

I have had a few now and my latest was one last month, I went to sleep holding the hand of the anaesthetic nurse. 😑

No need to worry- it's really rather nice. I was bitten on the face rather badly by a dog as a teen. I had to wait 10 hours before the plastic surgeon could do the operation as I had eaten breakfast. It was such a relief to driftoff to sleep knowing that I would be back in one piece when I woke up which seemed to happen a mere millisecond later.

I have had a few other minor ops and have found it to be a similar pleasurable experience.
