Messed up sofa measurements!

Posting here for traffic. I’m a complete idiot and don’t need telling - looking for advice really. Bought a corner sofa that was delivered yesterday. It’s a few cms too big for the space. I’m absolutely gutted. I know in the grand scheme of things these things don’t really matter but I’ve been desperate to decorate my lounge for years and feel upset it’s not perfect!
Anyone else experienced this or have managed to get someone to shorten a sofa. Not even sure if that’s a thing!

Thanks for any advice offered!

You can't shorten it.
Will it fit at all (oddly angled) or is it too big?

FlapAttack23 · 28/07/2018 10:12

Does it fit? In what sense is it too big? I bought a idge freezer than was .5cm too wide haha.. had to rip off the skirting board!

embod · 28/07/2018 10:16

It will fit at an angle or I could rearrange the room and have it in a different location. Just annoyed at myself as had a ‘dream’ image in my mind and it doesn’t fit with that.

Phew that's the right answer.
I was about to hand hold while you listed a brand new sofa on gumtree Grin

You need some stylistic type to do a layout for ya

FASH84 · 28/07/2018 10:30

Ok, I get this is really ott but when I'm redecorating a room including new furniture I make a scale plan (measure in cm then drop two decimal places) of it on squared paper then I cut out scale 2d versions of all the furniture so I can play around with it , see where things fit, walking space between items etc. SIL thought this was hilarious until she bought a sofa that didn't fit in their living room, and baby furniture for DN that just fits in the room but you can't move around the room for the most part. She just asked me to do a scale plan for baby 2's room. Do this with your room and furniture you have now and keep playing with it until you get a layout you like, it saves a lot of furniture lugging

FASH84 · 28/07/2018 10:31

I tend to do this before I buy the furniture but it will still help your situation

safariboot · 28/07/2018 10:56

What's in the way? If it's another piece of furniture you could change that, or you could probably force the sofa in if you like. If it's the door, would it help to rehang it the other way?

embod · 28/07/2018 11:00

It’s walls either side so no wriggleroom unfortunately.

Think I’ll try the scale plan idea. My partner is fed up lugging furniture around at the moment.

If it’s possible to rearrange the room I would do that and in a few months you won’t notice any more. Hopefully it’s still as comfortable and good looking.

Most of us have screwed up at some point.

If you bought it online or over the phone you can return if free within 14 days due to distance selling regulations. I did the same thing and they tried to charge me 300 quid to return it before I reminded them of the above.

Twigwonderkid · 28/07/2018 12:17

I like the take off the skiing board idea, would that make enough room?

SingaSong12 · 28/07/2018 12:23

Coquet may be right but if the sofa was customised it will not apply

If it is personalised DSR don't apply - but if you have bought from a predetermined selection of fabric - say a choice of 3 they normally offer, then arguably they can resell and they should accept a return.

If they tried to charge Coquet a £300 restocking fee that would be against the DSR, but they are quite within their rights to get you to foot the return postage/return transit fee. This is in the DSR - you get your original postage fee refunded, but the cost of getting the product back them falls to you.

I'd say try rearranging, or there would be no harm in asking the shop if they would return or exchange - they can only say no!

Send it back! Most companies take a sofa back if it doesn't fit
