we like our summers to be more fun and fluid and chilled

So what are your tips then Fucky?

NoMudNoLotus · 27/07/2018 21:37

Absolutely @Smellbellina 😊

We have had at least 2 ice creams a day , had PJ days , kept cool out of the sun , watched films and let them decompress.

Almostthere15 · 27/07/2018 21:37

You can adapt whatever suits can't you. For those who don't need these ideas then fine.

I find setting out some craft bits the night before means that dc will happily play at the table whereas if I suggest a craft activity they say no.

It's a bit late now but I also pick up inexpensive garden toys like water balloons, ring toss, touchable bubbles, chalk etc and hold them back for inevitable "I'm bored" moments. Whereas if I gave them all at once they would just fade into the overall pile.

I try to have at least one good day out a week (zoo etc) and one lazy day (pj's all day) but it's not hugely planned or structured. The pressure to be "making memories" really isn't helpful. A couple of playdates dotted around and a few days of summer/activity club in the middle of the holidays seems to be the right balance for us.

I don’t have any Confused
Just relax and enjoy really, and if your kids are tired and want to loll around for a bit, let them!
I can’t imagine being tired and wanting to lay on the couch and watch tv and someone insisting I play outside, clean a room, colour, read, draw etc first Hmm same with the food, if I fancy a bar of choc that’s what I fancy, not a little snack pot of grapes and crackers and strictly nothing else all day
It’s the summer holidays, just have fun!

NoMudNoLotus · 27/07/2018 21:46

And dependant on the child ... my 10 year old boy would eye roll at that set up , but what iv done every year that works is get them to make an investment in activities rather than my suggestions i stick a big sheet up and they write down all kind of things they would like to do in the hols.

Some of it with cost , a lot of it not , and certainly not stuff i would ever have dreamed of putting.

Eg , buy a coconut from the supermarket and drink the milk straight from it ... random but a quick easy win !

NoMudNoLotus · 27/07/2018 21:48

Thats how i roll too @FuckyDuzz .

MoonsAndJunes · 27/07/2018 21:48

Hmm I was wondering what she/he does to make the holiday 'fun, fluid & chilled' NoMud Not everyone structures their day.
Not sure what your point is.

NoMudNoLotus · 27/07/2018 21:50

www.46daysofsummer.co.uk/ We've been doing some of the activities from here, my kids need at least one parent-led structured activity a day not to go mad!

This week has been ok, next week we are counting down to holiday. I do think they need some structure, mine have to do a few pages of writing / maths / comprehension and read to me everyday, I think they'll forget otherwise!

Late mornings and post-dinner activities are fun though, me and my five-year-old have been playing board games and I'm teaching him some simple card games in that time he'd usually be too tired from school to do ANYTHING.

How about some spelling lessons?

We live in Nottinghamshire and went over to Lincoln to see friends and went to 2 museums, both free of charge and had craft activities and stuff going on. Dd is 3 but activities suitable for 3-11.

We had a great time and had a picnic so a free day out really.

I'm also considering national trust membership after meeting friends at the most amazing adventure playground at Belton House near Grantham.

Mine can’t play out at the moment... there’s a load of travellers camped out on the park near us ☹️

Beds made and chores done are always a must in our house. Permission must be earned to turn any TV/console/device on too... both with actions and attitude.

backaftera2yearbreak · 27/07/2018 22:08

I will give you a good tip.

Move to Scotland. The holidays will be over quicker 😂

FurForksSake · 27/07/2018 22:09

I've found some fun bits to do locally on Hoop (we currently have an international festival on, it's been brilliant!), been to see Dippy at Birmingham (the art gallery and museum were brilliant and we'd have enjoyed them without Dippy!) and that was free! Been to one NT last week and going to a Wild Wednesday event next week at another. That's £2 a child and looks fab, NT membership is really great.

NotAsGreenAsCabbageLooking · 27/07/2018 22:09

I also let my kids do price work... each chore has an amount assigned, so they can choose what pocket money they earn 👌🏼

Can you engage your local councillors on this matter very unfair indeed
