To ask god you finally lost weight (or ask if I should just forget it)

I’m 36 and I can’t remember the last time I was truly happy with my weight - enjoying buying clothes rather than trying to find ones that flatter.

But I’ve tried SO many times to have a go at losing some weight and I’m just so sick of the rollercoaster and inevitable failure, succumbing to wine and food.

Can you sort this shit out once and for all after 15 years on and off the wagon? Or should I just accept myself as I am?

I did lose 2.5 stone, by sticking to a daily exercise routine and using Myfitnesspal to stick religiously to 1200 cals

Due to several issues colliding at once I have sadly gained it back as I just couldnt keep on top of it with everything else.

If you want to lose the weight you have to commit to the regular regime, no excuses

Whole foods, plant-based diet. Loads of veg. Like LOADS. Eating to appetite. Very little processed food. No fizzy drinks and minimal alcohol. Get out in nature and move your body. Be kind and gentle to yourself Smile

I am 60 and have been following the Low Carb bootcamp here on Mumsnet (search for it in topics) - IT WORKS - I have lost one and a half stone in ten weeks and have found it very straight forward to follow. Lots and lots of lovely things to eat - cream, cheese, fatty meats etc.

I have previously tried every diet going - Weightwatchers, Slimming World, Rosemary Conely etc etc - I really recommend Low Carb.

ProudThrilledHappy · 27/07/2018 19:41

I should clarify, I did 40 mins every morning on my exercise bike before work (get the exercise out of the way so there’s no excuses later on). Combined with the low calorie diet I lost about 2-3 lb a week and dropped to a size 8 from a size 14-16

Duchessgummybuns · 27/07/2018 19:42

Lost a little bit lately doing 30 Day Shred and eating a bit less crap ie crisps/choc/fried foods :) not sure how much I’ve actually lost because I hate scales but there’s a reduction in love handles so all to the good!

Blood sugar diet - works

teaandtwigs · 27/07/2018 19:53

I'm doing the fitness guy plan and it's exactly what I needed - a proper meal plan, a little bit of flexibility if needed and you can have carbs! I honestly hadn't realised how huge my portion sizes were. I've been a yoyo dieter for years but this is a lifelong plan if you need it to be

MrsMozart · 27/07/2018 19:56

Walking, and tracking all on MFP.

Learning the 'cost' of food.

Deciding, once and for all, that I don't want to be like this any more.

Actually enjoying the feel and freedom of movement without all that extra weight and size.

I had to go gluten free a few years ago and as most of the substitutes are awful I just gave up eating bread pastry cakes biscuits pasta pizza most cereals etc
I lost 2 stone and kept it off
Then 18 months ago decided to try slimming world (my version) which is basically just low fat low carb and low sugar
I eat lots of protein, fruit veg and salads and have lost nearly a further 5 stone
I would have lost more and quicker but enjoy a few drinks, chocolate now and again ice creams etc and know if I’m too strict I’m just setting myself up to fail
I want this to be a permanent change so am also exercising more
It also helps me to drink more water
We always eat at table and chat over meals so eat slowly
Finally I just don’t have lots of snacks in house and only buy what food we need fresh every few days

Just posted this on a similar thread so reposting.
5:2 fasting. I'm crap at diets too, it's prettymuch fixed me in terms of food issues - I'm currently pg but when not, using it had me stabilised at a pretty happy weight, no obsessing or worrying that each choice had to be a 'good choice' etc etc.

Worth a look? It works for a lot of people, there's a very good and active section for it here, and a great 5:2 UK facebook group too. It's great for blood sugar and general health too.

TheShapeOfEwe · 27/07/2018 20:29

Having been fat for my whole adult life I have lost nearly 3 stone in the past 5 months by calorie counting using my fitness pal and doing couch to 5k. It hasn't been a totally smooth process but for the first time ever it feels totally sustainable because I know what sized portions I should now be eating.

BlueTears · 27/07/2018 20:41

God didn't help much - slimming world did 😜 lol.

sheepysheep · 27/07/2018 20:47

Another low carb fan here. I went from 13.5st to 10st January - may 2016 thanks to BIWI’s boot camp here on mumsnet. I’ve kept it off since - I’ve carried on low carbing but I’m slightly more relaxed about it now and don’t worry too much about the odd indiscretion.

I was really addicted to carbs before so it was hard to start with but now it’s easy. I travel a lot with work and it’s so easy to just have meat / fish + salad / green veg + oil / butter.

If you like meat, cheese, salad and veg this “diet” may be the one for you 👍 Not that it feels like a diet to be honest - you eat lots of fat so you always feel quite satisfied.

delphguelph · 27/07/2018 20:52

There's a helpful thread atm on AIBU about this.

My twopence worth : learning the cost of food, low carbing (or at least lower carbing, which basically translates into clean, better eating) and portion control.

You CAN be one of those folks who are satisfied by a handful of almonds as a snack!

sunshinewithabitofdrizzle · 27/07/2018 20:53

I'm 10 years older than you and have been dieting all my adult life. I can lose weight, I just can't keep it off. I've now booked to have a gastric bypass in September so that once and for all I can get this weight off and be able to enjoy the rest of my life without the constant yoyo-ing. I know it wont be easy and I'll not be able to eat "normally" again, but that's a small price to pay I think.

delphguelph · 27/07/2018 20:53

There does seem to be a distinction between people who are suited to low carb vs people who aren't.

Eat a bowl of porridge. Does it fill you for hours? If so, try Slimming World. If not try low carbing.

HushabyeMountainGoat · 27/07/2018 21:07

Low carb works for me but GOD do I miss the carbs (sorry bootcampers Sad).

When i'm on the wagon i am evangelical about it, but it takes organisation, especially for things like work lunches. I am bad at prepping the night before and so if i'm trying to buy a quick lunch from the work canteen it's wall to wall carbs. Social gatherings are the same.

The downside to low carb vs calories is that if you know you have, or are going to go over your allowance on one day, then you can compensate. With low carb, it takes you out of ketosis and so you can see a weight gain even from one carby day which can be quite demoralising and tempts the 'fuck- it' attitude.
