To think that people who leave animals in cars should be banned from keeping them

This honestly upsets and enrages me so so much. Why would you EVER leave your dog in a car, but especially when it's THIRTY THREE DEGREES outside! Those poor pups were panting like anything and all that horrible woman can do is argue with the man who saved them. It's fucking disgusting and should be an automatic lifetime ban from keeping animals, end of.

I dont for the life of me understand how people do this. It boggles my mind when i read another story about it. Seems to happen every day now!
Yes. Yes they should be banned.

At an animal park last week sat waiting for a bird display, a member of staff announced someone had left their ddog in the car in the car park. And that they had opened the unlocked door and stuck a reptile thermometer in and it was 36 degrees inside the car.
They gave the dog a drink but imo should have paraded the dog around the park until the bloody shameful owner had claimed it.

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/07/2018 18:47

DD wanted to be left in the car while I went to the shops once. I said no, she wanted to know why. So I parked in the hot sun and switched off. It took a couple of minutes for the car to get really, uncomfortably hot. It was so quick. Really anyone who wants to leave their dog in a hot car should try that first and see how long they last.

I keep a rescue hammer in the car and would have no hesitation to use it.

jaseyraex · 27/07/2018 18:48

Absolutely agree. I don't understand how people still do this to their dogs, there's so much information out there about it now. It's not an accident, it's not forgetting. It's plain ignorance and not caring for the animal.

Bambamber · 27/07/2018 18:50

I honestly don't understand why you would take your dog shopping knowing you'll be leaving it in the car. What's the point? Just leave it at home, I'm sure it will be much happier. My puppy normally comes most places with me, but if I know I'm going somewhere she can't come I leave her at home. Or if I'm out with her and need to pop to a shop I'll drop her at home. In the recent heat I've avoided taking her anywhere unless early morning or later in the evening. Should be zero tolerance and people should be prosecuted

CSIblonde · 27/07/2018 18:53

I agree , if you can't manage or understand something so basic/simple, you shouldn't have pets. It's also not long since a Police dog handler killed his second set of dogs , leaving them while he went to do 2hrs admin. He'd done exactly the same the year before. If you do it once, it's probably your usual MO & you'll carry on doing it. Why don't people leave dogs with water & shade at home: or with a friend if they get separation anxiety & then destructive ?

CocoaGin70 · 27/07/2018 18:54

I personally prefer the idea of putting the owner in a fur coat and locking them inside the car for the same length of time. On a daily basis to remind them how their dog felt.

I shouted at a man walking an elderly labrador at lunchtime today. Poor dog was barely moving and frantically panting. I'm too embarassed to repeat what I called him Blush.

CherryPavlova · 27/07/2018 19:00

We leave the dog in the car for very brief periods. We monitor the temperature continuously and avoid when very warm, he has water, he has his own safe space (boot area of estate with dog guard and bed).
He hates being left alone. We are working on calming him in urban environments but shops are frightening for him. To make it worse parent should encourage their children to approach him. He is very distressed by this, so we avoid him being tied up outside shops.

It’s no different to his crate at home and he’s not alone for so long plus he gets a run immediately before or afterwards.

thisisannc · 27/07/2018 19:04

I just don't understand how so many people still haven't got the message that you don't leave a dog in a car without air conditioning in hot weather. It gets horrifyingly hot almost immediately.

That said, my car does have a 'rest' setting which keeps cool air circulating for 30 minutes after switching the car off. I have used it a few times when I've left my dog for 5 minutes or so (and no, I don't necessarily have to bring her with me when I go out, but she likes being in the car and accompanying me on my errands). It's very pleasant to get back into a nice cool car, and the dog seems perfectly happy too.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 27/07/2018 19:05

They absolutely should be banned, nothing infuriates or upsets me more, in the hot weather I am constantly on the look out for dogs left cars, when I go to the supermarket etc so I can help them if need be.

ProfessorMoody · 27/07/2018 19:05

I can assure you, it's different to a crate at home. Hmm

Anyone who even puts a dog in a car in this weather is pretty damn stupid, but to leave them in there? Don't deserve to own an animal.

ForalltheSaints · 27/07/2018 19:07

There should be a law that bans an animal being in an unattended vehicle for more than say 10 minutes. Upon conviction, not only is the animal taken from you but you also lose your driving licence for say a minimum of 12 months.

CSIblonde · 27/07/2018 19:55

Cherry
All Daily Fail vet advice in the last week is it takes 15mins for a car to get to death level heat even with shade and water. Why are you risking it, all it takes is being held up delayed/sidetracked and you Dog dies,. Why can't one of you or a friend stay home with him when it's hot?
Maybe an on the spot £100 fine is the way forward?

CherryPavlova · 28/07/2018 08:36

That is as you say, Daily Fail. Our own vet says we have a very good arrangement and we have temperature monitoring and control whenever he is in the car. It is set at 21 degrees so no time uncomfortable for him at all. He is very happy and healthy there.
He would be very unhappy left at home. Of course we’d not go out in middle of day with him.
How would I ever leave the house?
The generalisation and ill Informed vigilante dog protectors who do not understand the training and care needs of an insecure rescue dog drive me bonkers.
He’ll travel with us today to meet family - about 1.5 hours journey. He’ll love the car but be less keen on the pub garden where we are meeting.
Do people not take their dogs on holiday using the car?
How do they collect from daycare or homeboarding?
Silly reactionary comments.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 28/07/2018 08:48

It always truly baffles me when people do this. We all know that it's cruel and dangerous plus it's hardly done in secret, people passing the car can see the dog and the registration! Utter fuckwits.

MissusGeneHunt · 28/07/2018 08:57

It's bloody appalling frankly. Wish I had an emergency hammer as the PP said... I'd rather get done for breaking a car window than see dogs suffer, although I suppose one could call the rspca or police (by which time it might be too late, after also trying to find the owner's of the dogs...).

RitaMills · 28/07/2018 09:03

ProfessorMoody it’s bit OTT to say that a dog can’t be in a car full stop on this weather, I’ve been walking mine in some dense cool shaded woodland that I have to drive to as it’s a bit far but while pup and I are in the car the AC is blasting and we are both cool, absolutely nothing wrong with that. He’s not left alone in car unless DS is with me and waits in the car with him but I always leave my car on (on EV mode I should add) with the AC blasting for them both.

Blagora · 28/07/2018 09:06

I've been driving to shady woodland to walk them it's about a 5 minute drive with air con.

Absolutely nuts comments on here.

FairfaxAikman · 28/07/2018 09:08

Because I do dog shows my car is set up as a rest area for my dogs - fans, water, a tailgate guard so the boot can be left open and a massive reflective sheet to cover the car.
Even with all that I wouldn't leave them in the car to go to the shops.

Blagora · 28/07/2018 09:10

If you drive for 30 mins with air con on (as I do to get to work), then park car in the shade and go into the coop for a pint of milk then your dogs will be fine.

beeefcake · 28/07/2018 21:04

Absofuckingloutely I agree

I can't believe this is still even a thing - how can people be so fucking THICK?!?!

Deshasafraisy · 28/07/2018 21:08

I think that in order to own a dog you should have to pass a test to obtain a licence
