To ask how I stop my cat pulling my carpets?!

My cat has taken a liking to our living room carpet, and she is clawing it to bits!

I’d there anything I can do to stop her? Or to at least hide the damage.

If you put strips of sellotape over it it should discourage her (then when the habit is broken you can remove them).

Does she have other scratching places? The best solution is to give her something better. They like very sturdy scratchers that they can fully stretch on without a wobble.

You can also take a more direct approach and keep a spray bottle with just water in it handy - a quick spritz in her direction when you catch her doing it will help discourage her!

Do you own a good solid scratching post? Mine almost entirely stopped clawing the recliner once they had a more appealing target.

I had this problem with mine when we lived in a flat and he had no regular access to outdoors. There was absolutely nothing that would make him stop, not repellants, bitter smelling sprays on the carpet or even (in desperation) a device that gave him a short sharp spray of air when he went near the area. Nothing worked.
Only stopped when we moved to a maisonette with a door that leads to a fire escape so he can go out when he wishes.

Sorry it’s no help at all, I think it’s purely boredom that makes them do it. Confused

I think get a couple of good scratching posts. We ended up just getting wood floors...Grin

WhiteCoyote · 27/07/2018 09:40

Will also add the little sod had not one but three different sturdy scratching posts around the flat.

Paie · 27/07/2018 09:40

Double sided sticky tape- PITA but they hate the sensation!

bandito · 27/07/2018 09:41

You can't. Cats do whatever they like. Smile Have a look at 'The Litter Tray' board for all the evidence you need.

OneThreadOnly0101 · 27/07/2018 09:42

You might not be able to much. One of mine only likes to scratch his claws on carpet. He ignores all scratching posts and those cardboard scratchers. My house has no carpet now so I had to buy him his own little square...

You could try getting a horizontal scratcher rather than vertical. Carpet scratch cat will only contemplate horizontal scratching, he won't do vertical. Girl cat on the other hand likes nothing more than spinning round a sisal pole Grin.

Thanks.

Will look into scratching posts. She has had them in the past, but wouldn’t use it Hmm

Sellotape idea made me laugh. My entire carpets would need to be covered, but anything’s worth a shot!

She doesn’t do it when I’m present, but she sits until the rooms empty. She must know it’s bad behaviour!

Try one of these. One of our cats prefers scratching the ground rather than a post.

HeyMacWey · 27/07/2018 09:44

You might need to put some catnip on it to encourage her to use it.

HardAsSnails · 27/07/2018 09:46

Some cats scratch vertically and some horizontally. Try a flat cardboard scratcher and a coir doormat.

NotAnotherUserName5 · 27/07/2018 09:48

She definitely a floor scratcher, rather than an upright scratcher. Doesn’t touch trees in the garden etc. She comes in to have a nice scratch Confused

I’ll definitely look at the floor type scratcher! Fab idea, thanks

We bought ours a.scratching post which was studiously ignored. Then got a scratching mat and placed it over one of her favourite sports. She scratched the carpet around the edge of the mat. Sigh. If you discover the secret, monetise it, you'll make a fortune.

HemanOrSheRa · 27/07/2018 09:54

They aren't your carpets any more. Do keep up Cat Slave Grin.

Cardboard scratcher has saved our furniture! Cheap too

ToadOfSadness · 27/07/2018 10:31

I never had any luck with scratching posts, mine preferred door frames and corners of carpets, they leave their scent and renew it regularly.

I did get one of mine to use a cardboard scratch bed (bought on Zooplus) and he loved it. You can sprinkle catnip in it to encourage use. He still scratched his regular corners of carpet and the wood on the enclosure panels though.

I bought scratching mats, one side sisal and one carpet, tried them on the floor, they would walk round them and rip the sofa, so propped them against the sofa and it stopped the sofa being scratched because they wouldn't go near it.

Try a plain wooden post, without any sisal wrap.

Here is the scratch bed www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/cats/scratching_posts/cardboard_cat_furniture/315507?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI_u_rpfy-3AIV2JrVCh0ggg0iEAQYAyABEgKIJvD_BwE
