*Was it worth it?

Leaving supermarket, person in front stops two steps outside of door, starts to look through pockets.

There is no room to pass them on one side and barely a trolley width and then considerable manoeuvring around them and displays the other. I say “excuse me”. (There are no displays to the side with no gap, there is plenty of space at that side that they could have been in out of the doorway)

No response. They locate cigarettes and matches, start to get one out of the packet. I say “excuse me” again. The way my trolley is pointing makes it clear I want to go the side there is no room.

They turn and say, “Well I thought you would have been able to get round the other side!”

(I had not been particularly annoyed up until that point, we can all unthinkingly minorly inconvenience others, but all it takes at most is a simple “Oh, sorry” as you realise and move.)

So I said, “If you did think about it, what made you decide it was reasonable for everyone behind you to have to go awkwardly around you, rather than you just stepping to the side?

With a fair amount of chuntering, they then moved to the side

So…

I probably am not unreasonable to be a bit irked, I am probably a bit unreasonable to challenge it, but was it worth it, will they be full of righteousness indignation at me speaking out, or might they think twice in future?

You were right to speak up but that person will not have been bothered by your comment and will probably do it again.

I know what you mean. I challenged someone over deliberate queue jumping recently; felt awkward after but I would've been more annoyed with the situation if I'd not spoken up at the time.

Lethaldrizzle · 27/07/2018 22:27

A 'please' on the end of the 'excuse me' may have got a better response

GodsGodsGods · 27/07/2018 23:37

Is excuse me not sufficiently polite? I agree it may have been politer, but it's not like I was asking for a favour.

Is not saying please in this scenario ruder than blocking a doorway?
