HELP - what do I do?

I haven't been in my job long - under 5 months. I've been trying to get a new role as a) I'm not keen on the role and company b) I want more money c) I want better hours.

I've been offered an interview at a good company....but it's next week. I work 9 - 6, and the interview is about 30 miles away from the office, so to go I would need to take annual leave.

I asked for the day off, and my manager said no, it''s too short notice (they want a months notice for annual leave requests). They said no to a half day too. They said the only exception would be if it's a medical appointment but I'd need proof. I'm a terrible liar and have no proof so I can't do that.

So...wtf do I do? I'll feel terrible to miss this opportunity.

I can't just take the day off unauthorised as I'll probably get sacked (I'm not in a position to be out of work), and the other company said they can ONLY do interviews on this particular day. I can't throw a sickie, as they'll realise this was the day I wanted off and put 2 and 2 together. All sicknesses are investigated with back to work interviews and scrutiny.

Advice please? Sad

Is it possible to suggest to the new company that you can't get the time off work to physically attend, but you could do a Skype interview with them during your lunch break? It would show them you're keen on the job and willing to problem solve, and your current company would be none the wiser

Book gp appointment, get proof, cancel immediately, go to ‘appointment’ and get sent for blood tests/X-ray/a&e etc Wink

Yes it’s horrible having to lie but people like that leave you no choice.

I think you will just have to let this interview chance go unless the new company will agree to reschedule it if they don't find a suitable candidate. There's no guarantee you would get the job anyway or that you wouldn't be equally fed up with it in 5 months or that you would be given a decent enough reference. Next time you will have to throw a sickie and offer to have it deducted from your annual leave on your return to work. I think a month's notice for holiday leave is pretty standard for a lot of places; it doesn't make them a shitty company as some have commented.

No idea but it sounds a right pain in the arse. I’d call the new company and explain the situation and see if they can advise anything or do the interview over Skype or something. Making, getting proof and then cancelling an appointment is cheeky but it should work, also, no gp is having their time wasted and be appointment is still available for someone else. I didn’t take the pregnancy comment to mean being pregnant (but I’m probably wrong and it would be nasty to then fake a miscarriage) I thought the poster meant an appointment to check but then she can say she isn’t but not sure if that would work. Hope you find some solution though.
