cheap European city break?

Bimgy85 · 26/07/2018 20:56

Simple as that really.

Was thinking Amsterdam but seems too expensive in terms of living , food and drink.

Any recommendations for a 4 night stay in a European city? With lots of stuff to see and do, cheaper standard of living?

Brussels is lovely.
Look at hotwire for cheap hotels too.

keyboardkate · 26/07/2018 22:58

Why would anyone go to Iceland and spend a fortune on a volcanic island for much cheaper price elsewhere with much more to see and experience.

Must be the geysers and the non guaranteed Northern Lights and lots of swimming in a lagoon somewhere.

Sorry, I was there last year and was significantly underwhelmed TBH, But I did it, so can comment!

Nicknacky · 26/07/2018 23:04

user Thanks, I will look again. I discounted Amsterdam becuase of the cost when I priced it up a few months ago. Flying from Scotland and it was pricey then.

PinkBalloonsAndCherryCoke · 26/07/2018 23:05

Madrid is lovely! We got easyJet flights and booked an apartment to stay in. Food and drink seemed surprisingly cheap there. It's a really beautiful city with lots to do.

Bimgy85 · 26/07/2018 23:16

Thanks everyone! Some great information here. I'm leaning towards Poland/Budapest. Would happily go to either one. Berlin May also be on the agenda.

For those asking I'm actually in Ireland so all this euro star / channel tunnel isn't relevant for me.

I have a habit of not picking anything until I find dirt cheap Grin

I loved Iceland but we travelled the length and breadth of the country and enjoyed the contrasts before North and South. I love doesn't the Highlands of Iceland in particular.

Bucharest with a trip out to Transylvania. Very cheap break and loads to see /do that was cheap.

BikeRunSki · 26/07/2018 23:42

A Dutch colleague once recommended that, to visit Holland/Amsterdam, to stay somewhere that is not Amsterdam and get the train there. Hotels in Amsterdam are very expensive, and Dutch trains are cheap and efficient.

MidLifeCrisis2017 · 26/07/2018 23:56

Bologna, especially if you like food

Lucca even better.

OptimisticIntrovert · 27/07/2018 00:01

Amsterdam is lovely but very very expensive. Berlin is medium priced.
Budapest and Krakow are beautiful and inexpensive (and Budapest is on a seam of spa water so you can spa very cheaply).
I would definitely go for the latter two.

OptimisticIntrovert · 27/07/2018 00:03

Oh and meant to say I have stayed in AirBnB in all 4 to great success. It can really keep the cost down.

ThePrioryGhost · 27/07/2018 00:43

I was really stunned by Bordeaux - I wouldn’t have chosen it, but my friend did. Cheap, short flight; beautiful city; lovely food and drinks; activities like canoeing or cycling if you’re so inclined (you can cycle around the vineyards!); hot weather - worth a look for anyone!

Kisskiss · 27/07/2018 01:05

Budapest for sure! Beautiful place, lots to see ( old town, Danube and older town) and very cheap . Also plenty of Nice clubs/bars/restaurants and very very affordable. Hotels also cheap and there’s a few open air thermal spas to visit now that it’s summer if you want to cool off

FrauNeuer · 27/07/2018 01:27

Would you consider Rotterdam? Cheaper and in my opinion more scenic than Amsterdam. Not many tourists, which I’ve never understood because it’s a great place.

BitOutOfPractice · 27/07/2018 04:31

The Hague is, IMO, much nicer than Amsterdam. Plus there's beaches!

stopdropandroll · 27/07/2018 07:10

warsaw and budapest are both great and very cheap, so was sofia when we went last year. berlin is definitely not as cheap as it used to be but still great. check out easyhotels for cheap accommodation - some are better than others eg the london hotels are so subdivided that the rooms are tiny but the budapest one is like a “proper” hotel just with the easy branding.

NigellasGuest · 27/07/2018 09:54

I second Bordeaux as pp said! Beautiful city, quite small so you .can walk a lot. I stsyed at Hotel de Tournay

NigellasGuest · 27/07/2018 09:55

de Tourny rather

Mousefunky · 27/07/2018 09:58

Prague. Went last summer and it is honestly one of the most lovely cities I have ever visited. The locals are wonderful, the scenery is beautiful and the weather was great too. We had a great time and it was also cheap as chips which helps Grin. Alcohol and food is dirt cheap! It’s a small enough city to walk around as well so no need to take the tram/bus unless you want to.

mirmc · 29/08/2019 19:08

Dublin Lisbon flights are really reasonable, as Aer Lingus, Ryanair and TAP all fly there. You can stay in a gorgeous Air BnB really cheaply. We lliterally couldn't spend our money. Food and drinks were excellent. We went in October and the weather was gorgeous.

Drpeppered · 29/08/2019 19:20

Booked last week to go to krakow in November.

Flights are £38 each. Air bnb is £120 for three nights! So in total it’s around £100 each. Meant to be cheap out there as well.

LEELULUMPKIN · 29/08/2019 19:30

When are you thinking of? You may laugh at this but Venice can be done cheaply at the right time of year and if you do your research.

We were there in January and got a 5* hotel on the Grand Canal for an absolute steal through Secret escapes. We even got upgraded to a suite.

I totally fell in love with the place but I know I would HATE it during touristy season though.

Secret Escapes is your friend here, even if just for ideas. As is Topcashback, most of the travel companies have offers on pretty much all the time. I am evangelical about that site now.

In just under a year I have got £200 just clicking through them! I tell everyone about it now.

Have fun hunting OP.

Krakow - I'm going in 2 weeks time 😍😍 for return flights, private transfers and 3 nights in a 4* hotel B&B cost less than 250 per person. We're doing lots of trips which has still only added about another 80 to the cost. Sooo excited, I've wanted to visit Poland since I was 12 😍😍

CaptureCastles · 29/08/2019 20:27

I go to Krakow three times a year, love it there. I'd considered buying a flat as I enjoy it so much! Gdansk is lovely too.

Budapest is another one great for a budget break, but I'd definitely pick Krakow :)
