What the fuck is it??? We thought the cat had done a shit at first but... it's got eyes... and a mouth...

It was on the patio this morning but it's now in the bushes and I need to know a) what it is and b) whether it is harmful to cats or life in general. Suffice to say, I'm never going in the garden again!

Husband identified elephant hawk moth for me years ago in E.Anglia, after boyhood enthusiasm. Our (wild) garden backed onto railway line, which did probably have rosebay willowherbs, as I understand old steam trains used to frequently set fire to embankments, but nobody had been in this area for years.

Present garden has buddeleia (spelling?) right outside where I sit with laptop, but the only butterflies seen this year have been cabbage whites (or similar), even in the wilder area at the back, so maybe N.Yorks has had fewer heatwaves than other parts of the country.
