...to be sick to the back teeth of diet chat?

ThistleAmore · 26/07/2018 01:21

I work in an office which is slightly removed from the main body, and most of my colleagues are women.

There is a LOT of chat about diets (please note - diets, not diet: I'd happily talk about food all day long), and quite frankly, I'm going to set myself on fire if I have to sit through one more dissection of 'syns' or why rice is a free food (I can't see how, personally).

I play a very physical, contact sport at a decent level and train hard, so I eat a lot to maintain my weight and physicality (being able to play well is more important to me than what I look like in a bikini), and this doesn't go unmentioned. God forbid I should feel happy in my strong, fit body than can run and smash for an hour and a half, it would appear.

And yes, I do have noise-cancelling headphones, thank heavens, but sometimes I have to take them off.

Is there anything more boring than listening to somebody talk about their diet? Apart from maybe their dreams?

NOTHING. MORE. BORING. I twork with someone who is 'in keto' OMFG soooooooooo boring. Someone else is on a diet who came in and I swear to god, it was like marjery Dawes. 'potato croquettes are only 1 point. I don't like them, but I just eat them to fill me up' 😂😂

PositiveVibez · 26/07/2018 01:26

*work

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 26/07/2018 01:27

Boring people should be forbidden from talking.
Who gives a flying fuck about what they ate or what they dreamed about last night?
If I was the queen I would make it illegal to be boring 🤪 with a life penalty

73kittycat73 · 26/07/2018 01:29

Don't have to suffer it myself luckily, but just wanted to say to this:

God forbid I should feel happy in my strong, fit body than can run and smash for an hour and a half, it would appear.

Good for you, you sound like a great role model! Smile

@PositiveVibez

I swear to god, it was like marjery Dawes. 'potato croquettes are only 1 point. I don't like them, but I just eat them to fill me up' 😂😂

I feel your pain. Wink

It's the 'rice as a free food' thing that really confuzzles me.

I exercise a LOT, and if I ate unlimited quantities of white rice, I would still pack on the pounds: I don't understand how this is proscribed as a thing for people with mostly sedentary lifestyles.

And don't get me started on how fantastically wrong it is to describe any food as a 'syn' (clever wordplay or no).

YANBU. I can't stand the way it's spoken about regularly, is on the front of womens' magazine, and even on here the mere whiff of a diet thread and out come the smuggies - they know it all, can tell you the statistics, are patronising about how 'easy' it is to lose weight, in full lecture mode.

I think the smuggies are overweight but from behind a screen love to wax lyrical as if they're nutricians. Anyone who talks about food all the time is obsessed with it

They can be breatharians for all I care. I find it easy to not join in constant food talk, and just tune out.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 26/07/2018 01:47

I don't mind it as such, as the people i know aren't openly obsesive about syns etc.

What irriates me is, the people who comment on what your eating/look like and are obsessive about what they and everyone else eats based on some faddy diet Keto/atkins/maimi beach whatever, i dont want to faddy diet i want to eat three healthy meals a day.

In my opinion these diets seem to be a short term fix and when you've done your period of time/reached your target people seem to just go back to putting weight back on.

JaneJeffer · 26/07/2018 01:52

YANBU. Being on a special diet is just a hobby for a lot of women. Boring.

HerRoyalNotness · 26/07/2018 02:17

I stopped going to aplaygroup as all they talked about was organic kale and boot camp. Kill me now. One of them now has an organic vegan instagram account and is trying to get a following. I’m not following.

emmyrose2000 · 26/07/2018 04:54

YANBU
Nothing more boring than listening to someone gabbing on about their diet/food choices. I instantly tune out if someone does start up about it, and also skip all those pages in print media.

ShastaBeast · 26/07/2018 05:10

Worse is being on a diet and being questioned on it. I’m strictly dieting right now but find it embarrassing and am trying to hide it. Was doing low carb, and will go back to it after summer but I got lots of comments on that too. It’s not even a female thing where I work. Some is linked to fitness or lifestyle/ethics or health which is more interesting. I’m the only one actively losing weight, but no women are overweight.

XiCi · 26/07/2018 05:15

It's absolutely fucking constant at work and it drives me mad. All I hear about when I get to work is how many points this and how many syns that and how many hours at the gym and no-one ever seems to get any thinner Grin

TheHulksPurplePanties · 26/07/2018 06:15

YABU to come on and complain about people talking about diets all the time and than proceed to talk about diets.

*It's the 'rice as a free food' thing that really confuzzles me.

Shaboohshoobah1 · 26/07/2018 06:23

This drives me mad too. And it’s always the ones who are overweight who seem to be the authority on what works and which diet is the best, and then lecture others. Mind boggles. Clearly if you are overweight, you don’t know what works, or you’d be thin (if that’s your goal)

thecatsarecrazy · 26/07/2018 06:23

I hate the ones who go on about it on f.b. "oh I've lost a lb this week"
"oh wow hun that's amazing what diet you on? "
Or tag themselves at the gym. I've lost over a stone, not said a word on f.b about being on a diet and no fucker has noticed either Sad. But I'm doing it for myself anyway I guess.

SerenDippitty · 26/07/2018 06:27

What a nice thread......

mrsstewpot · 26/07/2018 06:31

I've probably been guilty of this. Blush
Your comment about people talking about their dreams did make me laugh though OP. I hate when folk do that - it doesn't matter how fantastical it was, IT DIDN'T REALLY HAPPEN so I'm not interested!

Tiredspice2 · 26/07/2018 06:39

In every office I have worked in this aspect has driven me mad! This constant mind numbing talk of “syns” and “low carb”, and “low fat” etc makes me want to pull my hair out. Just cut out the junk, but eat normal, healthy, nutritious food and start moving more ffs.

GoldenBlue · 26/07/2018 06:43

SW is made up of a bunch of different categories of food:

Speed food - low calorie dense fruits and veg
Healthy a - a small measured portion of calcium containing foods (dairy or alternatives with added calcium)
Healthy b - a measured portion of fibre containing food
Free food - other fruit, carb containing veg, lean protein, fat free plain yoghurt/quark, and yes fried rice and pasta
Syns - all other foods have syn values based on calorie content. This includes healthier syns such as avacardo, oils, nuts etc as well as chocolate and takeaways - 1 syn is 20 calories and the plan allocates 5-15 per day

Yes rice is free food. No you can't eat unlimited quantities

The SW plan states that every meal should be made up of not less than 1/3 speed food which goes on your plate before any other food groups.
Your meal should allow you to eat to be satisfied but not stuffed.
The idea being that ultimately you reduce your portions of calorie dense food by replacing a third with salad, veg or low sugar fruits.
So worst case would be 3 meals of 2/3 of a plate made up with rice per day, although that doesn't sound appetising.

In between meals you should reach for speed food first so there shouldn't be an opportunity for endless rice, pasta, potatoes etc.

There is a second option of SW called SP which heavily reduces carbs in order to improve weight loss. Personally I don't find simple carbs work for me so I limit them more but others eat them and seem to do ok on the plan.

So ultimately the plan is made up of the following each day:

120 calories of dairy
120 calories of fibre based food
100-300 calorie dense foods as syns
1/3rd every meal very low calorie dense fruit and veg
Then other free food to make up the rest of your meals

I was obese and have lost 3 1/2 stone and have a healthy BMI now. I've stayed at target using SW for over a year. It does work if people follow it right Smile

MaverickSnoopy · 26/07/2018 07:00

It's not just offices though. I was on the bus the other day (think small back village bus full of mostly old people and mum's with buggies, usually who know each other through "the bus") and there were a couple of ladies sat talking about slimming world. These were older ladies and I had a massive lightening bolt moment where I realised that 1) these women may have been dieting most of their lives and 2) I don't want to be dieting most of my life!

Any time I've ever done a diet I've never told anyone. It's embarrassing to me, partly because I struggle so much. I do feel like I've been losing the same 2 stone for the last 5 years (when really I need to loose at least 4 stone to be where I want to be). I've mostly done slimming world. I think that if you stick at it religiously but that for some people (like me) it's not actually teaching you the proper way to eat and so you fall into the diet for life cycle (because you're forever trying to loose the same weight) and for many people this means talking about it non stop.

We need better food education and this needs to be taught at a young age or we're going to be stuck dieting forever and stuck listening to people talking about syns and keto....

Shitonthebloodything · 26/07/2018 07:11

Oh god, so fucking boring!
What's worse than that is people with made up allergies (read, very mild intolerances with no real, actual consequences) going on about them ALL THE TIME.
I have a family member like this and I dread seeing them now because they've become so utterly self absorbed and dull.

@Goldenblue I understand SW and I still think it's the most bullshitty boring nonsense ever. It's not interesting.

GoldenBlue · 26/07/2018 07:30

Sorry for being boring Smile

I just get frustrated that people waffle about it without actually understanding it and therefore get dodgy ideas like eating endless rice Smile

twofloorsup · 26/07/2018 07:34

I'm sick of it too.
I left the slimming world cult about 3 years ago once I realised it was designed to make you eat and eat and eat (free food) so when you stop following it you're still eating loads and of course gain the weight again so back you go Hmm

I cook for a living and get fed up with people bringing their own food because they're on a diet. Yes love til I make flapjacks or birthday cake then miraculously you're not !
And the one who's eating crumpets like they're going out of fashion because they're free on weight watchers. Maybe but the inch of butter probably isn't Grin

Alconleigh · 26/07/2018 07:57

Totally agree, it's epically dull. Up there with what is happening in soap operas or Love Island etc as unacceptably banal chat. I've had one or two workplaces where that's been the norm and I feel your pain.
