to be upset that DD1 can't play with her friend because of DD2's chicken pox

DD1 was looking forward to meeting up with some friends that she doesn't go to school with. However, the mum has told me she is 12 weeks pregnant and is concerned that DD1 might be infectious even though she has already had it.

If my memory serves me, chicken pox isn't as dangerous as the other diseases during this period of the pregnancy. It is only risky if at the early stages of the pregnancy or late stages and if the mother hasn't had it. I might be wrong but with the weather the way it is this week, I'm fed up as I can't do an awful lot with the kids. I have no kitchen as we are having building work and most of DD1's friends are away. So tell me if I'm being unreasonable.

well slightly

because if her existing children haven't had it and get it and she's feeling knackered with the pregnancy

oh hang on you said DD has had CP .. she won't be a carrier then .. your friend is being a bit pregnancy-enfeebled and you're not being unreasonable

Her kids have had it. She's worried tht DD1 willhave shingles. But I thought that affect the elderly and you are more likely to get CP from shingles.

but shingles are a result of a stress reaction or of being rundown or sometimes a breakdown in the immune system they are not caused by being exposed to the CP virus

she doesn't know what she's talking about

Who is most likely to get shingles?
Shingles can affect adults and children, but is much more common in older people. It can not be triggered by contact with someone who has chickenpox.

Reactivation of the virus is more common in elderly people whose immune system is weakened. There are various possible causes of this:

conditions that affect the immune system, including HIV infection
periods of increased stress
excess alcohol intake
long term courses of steroids
chemotherapy or radiotherapy - cancer treatments
medicines used after organ transplants (immunosuppressants)

She may not be thinking entirely logically but it is her prerogative not to run any risk she believes may exist.

mumtwogirls · 30/05/2007 18:23

Twiglett thanks for that. I guess it's her decision in the end but I just feel so let down.

Has she had chicken pox herself? Sounds like there is very little risk to anyone here since your dd1 has already had CP. However, when I was heavily pregnant with ds1 I refused to see my friends whose son had CP, 'just in case' even though I've had CP myself.

Pregnancy does make you feel very overprotective of yourself and your baby so I would try to be understanding. Hope you find something nice to do instead.
