To take the receptionists advice...?

I always get itchy boobs when I am due on my period, this month was particularly bad and I would wake myslf up scratching underneath my boobs.

I realised my boob was really quite sore where I had scratched the other day and when I took my bra off last night.. TOO MUCH INFORMATION KLAXON there was a little blood and yellow puss on it! Not a lot but still..

I thought I would just keep the area dry and hope for the best but I must have had this for about 2 weeks, hence it becoming a bit infected. It looks quite clean but angry.

I rang my surgery for advice as to whether to come in and when I described the problem she said Germolene should do it and did not offer me an appointment.

Sitting at my desk now and it really is stinging quite a bit. Should I overide the receptionists decision and see a doctor (I am being paranoid and imagining allsorts, sepsis etc) or just go and get germolene or similar (if anyone has any better ideas) after work?

TBH I have not really been paying much attention to the area as I didn't realise it was quite as bad as it is so maybe if I make an effort of treating it, it will heal quickly?

bit worried

I came back on to let everyone know what the Pharmacist said and now you have me worrying I have breast cancer!

I saw 2 pharmacists. The first I got nervous and described it as I was talkign about someone else. He said I should go to the Doctor.

Second one I said it was my probolem and described it and he suggested topical antiseptic cream for a couple of days and GP if no improvement.

To confirm, this isn't a rash that has just appeared, this is scram marks where I have broken skin because I have scratched an itchy boob in the night. I get itchy boobs about a week before I am due on and no other time of the month.

That said, you have got me concerned about breats cancer so I am going to arrange to see a Doctor to see if it is anything I should be concerned about.

My scratch is healing and looks a lot less angry than Tuesday evening. I will take a photo tonight in case anyone is interested!

Pharmacists are qualified as are doctors. Receptionists are not. Germolene should be banned it is rubbish, See a professional

Pharmacists are qualified as are doctors

No they're not, they're qualified as pharmacists. Hmm

Caribbeanyesplease · 26/07/2018 12:10

Confusedbeetle

Wrong

Ukelou · 26/07/2018 12:41

I dont think confusedbettle was saying pharmacists are qualified as doctors just that they are qualified the same as doctors are qualified (but obvs in different fields) but receptionists arent qualified.

I agree with PP and would go see the pharmacist. My DD has terrible problems with her skin and i always see them first - they really are very good at what they do and are there for so much more than just dishing out medicines!

madamginger · 26/07/2018 13:49

Actually some pharmacists can write prescriptions, they are usually employed by a GP practice rather than a pharmacy though.
My gp has one and he’s excellent at treating minor things that need a prescription like skin infections or tonsillitis but don’t necessarily need to be seen by a dr.

LEMtheoriginal · 26/07/2018 13:57

You need to complain about that receptionist she shouldnt be giving medical advice at all. Ever.

I am rather blessed on the boob department and this has been an issue for me in the past. I believe i was given canestin also.

Otherwise actually germolene isnt that bad advice but you do need to call and insist on seeing either a doctor or a nurse.

CrispsAndDip · 26/07/2018 14:02

What is so bad about germolene?

Nothing wrong with it but it will do sweet fanny adams if its a fungal infection.

Id get yourself checked out for peace of mind. If i get this i tend to use sudocrem as its very soothing.

CSIblonde · 26/07/2018 15:28

My mum used to get this a lot, exacerbated by big boobs. Practice Nurse, Receptionists know bugger all about infection control. I'd say sudocrem rather than germolene too in meantime, if it's weepy & there is pus. Keep clean and dry between antibiotic cream twice a day is probably what you'll get told.
