To wonder how to spot a troll so I don't keep investing my time?

PRILK · 25/07/2018 15:03

It's not time, really, just emotional responses.

This is the 3rd thread since joining that has been deleted. It's extremely frustrating.

How do you spot these trolls?

Can MN not track their IP and block it if they're repeatedly making new accounts?

OP posts:
detdet · 25/07/2018 16:12

There is a PE kit/period at school troll

Always teen daughter denied access to toilet.

tomaszwielka · 25/07/2018 16:14

To many troll on internet in my opinion.

Why is not everyone genuine ?

bringincrazyback · 25/07/2018 16:14

Treat every thread as trolling.

Bit strong.

Singlenotsingle · 25/07/2018 16:17

Tomasz there you are! Wait there! Where's Michael?

IKnowItsTIMHONKSTIMHONKS · 25/07/2018 16:18

Tomasz 😂

Yellowcrocodile · 25/07/2018 16:22

I don’t know now with twins come up, but they seem to al lot.

The troll will talk about ‘DT’ or maybe DT1 and DT2.

Twins are reasonably ununusal, so if you have autistic twins that you reuse to vaccinate and you’ve just been kicked out of your home by your evil narc OP without a penny, and your family all live 200 milestone away and you live rurally so you can’t get to the food bank and you have £11.13 to make it through to payday them I’m a bit Hmm

If you’re posting about your cat looking for advice on its cough and mention that you have twins I’m less suspicious Grin

IrenetheQuaint · 25/07/2018 16:27

My advice: before you post anything, ask yourself if you'd be happy posting it if you subsequently found out it was a troll thread. If it's generic sensible advice or incredibly witty then the answer is probably yes. If it's a long heartfelt response with lots about your own personal history then I'd think again.

FWIW I'm sure lots of the CF threads, in particular, are total invention.

reallybadidea · 25/07/2018 16:31

I don't think that the ltb thread was a troll so much as it had descended into a pile-on.

TheShapeOfEwe · 25/07/2018 16:38

Sometimes they're so convincing tho - I think we were all taken in by that abortion clinic thread that just got deleted. So it isn't always easy!

IKnowItsTIMHONKSTIMHONKS · 25/07/2018 16:49

Wait the abortion clinic one was a troll??

TheShapeOfEwe · 25/07/2018 16:51

Yeah Sad deletion message said it was a previously banned poster.

Sockwomble · 25/07/2018 16:52

The abortion clinic one got a goady comment in early on.
Any thread started by a teacher about punishments or toilets.
Anything that seems extreme may well be a troll.

TheShapeOfEwe · 25/07/2018 16:54

What was the goady comment? I must have missed it

immortalmarble · 25/07/2018 16:55

You could pop over to reddit for a MN troll related chat Halo

Butterymuffin · 25/07/2018 16:55

See, I'm actually glad the termination one isn't real as now a bunch of women in a clinic won't be confronted with a baby, thankfully.

Sockwomble · 25/07/2018 16:57

Something like "it's not as if they see them as babies."

dimplesmccutie · 25/07/2018 16:58

what was the abortion clinic one i must have missed that.

SadieHH · 25/07/2018 17:01

I'm glad it's not real but I was a bit pissed off that I was made to feel like shit by her and another poster for simply offering to help.

Prestonsflowers · 25/07/2018 17:02

There’s one who always posts about people stripping to their underwear in a work situation.
Usually appears in half term or school holidays

Hassled · 25/07/2018 17:05

The OPs in troll threads often start as if they're a story - "I'll start at the beginning/I'll rewind" etc. Those probably aren't the right phrases - but if it sounds like a story then it probably is.

TheShapeOfEwe · 25/07/2018 17:06

Dimples poster wondering if she could take her 6mo baby with her to her appointment at an abortion clinic

Sockwomble yes that was a bit goady!!

SillyLittleBiscuit · 25/07/2018 17:12

Only responding to comments that could be deemed negative rather than thanking 'helpful' people (i.e. people who agree with them).

I think that’s the horrible thing about trolls, they are often trolling about such awful things that you sort of feel like ‘they must be for real, no one would lie about that’

There’s been a couple of awful TFMR ones that really got to me, I mean what the fuck is wrong with people?

Posters often get caught out because they can’t believe someone would lie about this shit, so defend them even when it looks dodge. Like with the women fleeing abuse who have no money fishing threads, there will always be people saying things like ‘I believe you OP’ and ‘how dare people question this poor young woman after all she’s been through.’ But it’s hard to point it out to people without being accused of troll hunting.

Cleaningthefours · 25/07/2018 17:24

There have been loads today. Almost every thread I've been on today.

2 racist ones just today - one deleted as racist and one PBP.

Abortion one - PBP and an obvious one.

Amateur historian - PBP.
