New job nightmare!

In May this year, I started a new job. It was a complete change as I was previously a SEN TA - but knew that the contract was coming to an end so thought i'd try something new.

This new job has been - for me - a nightmare from beginning to end. My line manager told me within weeks that I knew what I was doing so I could just get on with it. She got me to make up display boards for a conference and didn't want to know what was on them. She asks me what I think we should do all the time and bad talks her boss and other members of staff to me, which makes me feel awkward. She complains about being busy, then spends 2 hours faffing with a fan. She completed my 121 / pdp without any of my input and sent it off to her boss. Then when she goes on holiday, asks me to cover her outside of work hours with little notice.

This week I am on holiday, and I completed some tasks with guidance from other members of staff, and sent her an e-mail to let her know what I had done. She texted and e-mailed me to tell me I had no right to do a certain task, as I don't know what I am doing and will cause all sorts of problems for her. She then told me I would have to undo this before Monday - which I did on saturday (not my working day) after I e-mailed her to explain that I had sought support for the task, and had authorisation from her boss to do this.

I am so fed up its not funny. She already has issues with her boss, and has recruited other members of staff to write a letter of complaint about her - something which she has discussed openly in front of me (including details of other women who I am sure would not appreciate being discussed in such an open manner).

I have always worked for professional - yet friendly - organisations, and although there is often the odd "difficult" character, i've never really experienced this level of madness! I am so new that I don't who to trust. There's not even a clear guide of how to escalate any problems. I have never wanted to just disappear - but could quite easily just not turn up next week! I did have high hopes for this job - the reason why I took it, but just feel like I have made a terrible mistake!

Any words of advice would be greatly appreciated - I feel so low, I just want a career to support me and my kids.

What a nightmare. I was in a similar situation a couple of years ago. In my case I felt there was no option but to leave - it was a small organisation and my own crazy line manager was the chief executive - but it sounds like you work in a bigger place? Is there an HR department you can go to?

It's not that big tbh - there seems to be a lot of bosses though . . .
