Cat poo

Sunkist12 · 24/07/2018 13:47

We've got a cat and for the past month someone keeps delivering cat poo in a bag to either our front door or the back garden. This has happened 4 times already. I get this must be annoying, especially if you don't have cats... but is posting the cat poo back really okay?! Also, how does that person know the poo they bagged belongs to our cat? There must be tons of cats roaming in the area. I'm at a loss at what to do and have 3 young dc, so finding bagged up poo around our property is not on. My aibu is what would you do, if a cat frequently visited your garden? Would you take back the offending poo?! If the person who did it was genuinely upset, I'd buy cat deterrent supplies and do what I can. But honestly, he's a cat, I can't police her everyday.

If your neighbour keeps on leaving the bags in the same place maybe you could leave them a note? Something along the lines of ‘I’m really sorry my cat is pooing in your garden. He/She is litter trained and I am doing all I can to stop him/her going to the toilet outside. In the meantime can you please knock and let me know which neighbour you are, so that I can come and regularly clean it up until the matter is resolved.’ Then if they do knock apologise profusely and offer them a spray bottle (make sure it’s a gentle spray) to spray at your cat if you catch them in the act and any other deterrents you can think of. I’d also speak to your vets and see if they have any suggestions for deterrents that won’t harm your cat and then offer to install them for them for free. Good neighbours are hard to come by, so it’s best to keep them on side whenever possible 😊

NotAsGreenAsCabbageLooking · 24/07/2018 14:31

cat proof your garden 😂😂

I actually think people that do keep cats as indoor pets, or confined to a relatively small space are pretty cruel. A cat is a roaming animal.

I have a cat, it shits. Mostly in my garden... sometimes in others 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ninoo25 · 24/07/2018 14:32

If there are a few cats in the area it could be more than one cat too, as they often leave it unburied as a way of marking territory. Maybe the disgruntled neighbour has a cat turf war going on, but only ever sees your cat?

happypoobum · 24/07/2018 14:32

Arf

Indeed Grin It's cat/fox/badger/mink/hedgehog central around here. I found an enormous pile of horse poop on the drive yesterday - what would your neighbours do with that OP???!!!

Nobody in their right mind would get het up about this. If OP keeps her cat in, another animal/animals will just cover the territory and shit.

Or do some of you want to ban all animals? They all crap.

JacquesHammer · 24/07/2018 14:34

Horse poo is useful. I live fairly rurally and the minute you get horse poo someone is out collecting it for their roses Grin

Yeah but they don’t all have owners taking the “benefit” of having a pet and inflicting all the shit bits (pun intended) on others Grin

catlady34 · 24/07/2018 14:34

I think allowing your cat to poo on someone else's property is just as bad as returning someone's cat's poo to them TBH. You have children but they may do as well, and they shouldn't have to scope out their garden for poos before letting their kids out to play.

Dottierichardson · 24/07/2018 14:37

OP I personally wouldn't reward someone behaving in this passive aggressive way by seeking them out and cleaning their garden. It sounds as if they are slightly unstable, I would ignore.

Also flicking cat faeces over a neighbour's wall is a form of harassment. As is leaving bags like this on someone's doorstep, it would not be unreasonable to report this to the local police.

NotAsGreenAsCabbageLooking · 24/07/2018 14:37

I think if you have an outdoor space and you don’t want any animal poo in it... the onus is on you to ‘proof’ your own garden.

lily2403 · 24/07/2018 14:40

God i wish i had thought of doing this...like cats but i HATE that my neighbours cat has a poo in our garden, i have a little one and have to make a sweep of the garden to get rid of it before he plays which is really annoying...any tips on how to stop would be really great

WillowPeach · 24/07/2018 14:40

I'd be really peed off if any neighbour's cats did this to my garden. My view is that it is your cat, so your responsibility.

I have two cats myself, both happily indoor cats (for safety reasons) and both litter trained. Why should I have to pick up after somebody else's cat? My garden, my right to keep it clean and poo free.

I'd post it back too - if I knew whose cat it was. My poor Gran has forever been picking cat shit up over the years from her garden but she has never had any pets - not really fair is it?

Sorry OP, YABU. You could put your cat on an extendable leash and give him free rein of your garden every night - keeps him safe too.

SuburbanRhonda · 24/07/2018 14:41

jacques

No need to @ me - I’m onthe thread.

happypoobum · 24/07/2018 14:41

Where I live you would always have to do this, even if there were no pets, because of the number of wild animals. I don't think there are many parts of the UK that don't have foxes are there?

And here are all the hideous diseases your children can get from bird poo

SuburbanRhonda · 24/07/2018 14:42

Are they blind or disabled?

Mousefunky · 24/07/2018 14:44

I kept my cat indoors for the first year and half of his life but he was peeing all over the house constantly despite being neutered and me trying 10000 things to deter him. Advice on MN when I started a thread was to let him outside so I did. He now goes out every day and hasn’t peed in my house for months. So MN advice was to let my house cat out, on this thread it’s to keep cats indoors? Hmm

You are right OP, you can’t police cats and home owners should buy cat deterrents if they’re tired of cat shit. Cats are clean creatures and bury their shit anyway, it might be a different animals poo the neighbour is giving you. Must have a lot of time on their hands to bag someone’s cat shit up and put it on their doorstep. Dat petty life.

Notso · 24/07/2018 14:45

I applaud your neighbour. Cat poo is grim, regardless of their right to roam. You have chosen to deal with cat shit by getting a cat so I don't see how you can complain about having to do just that.
We had to get rid of two plants and the kids climbing frame because of cats.
I don't buy the fox/hedgehog/badger poo comments either, we have a camera set up on the back garden and I've only ever seen cats.
My neighbours cats stay in her house/garden and seen happy enough.

TrickyKid · 24/07/2018 14:46

I see the cat that shits in our garden so I know who it belongs to. I've spent too much money on various things that are supposed to keep them away.
I'm very tempted to bag the shit up and deliver it to my neighbour but I don't.
Seriously, teach your cat to use a litter tray or make sure it can't get out of your garden.

PositiveVibez · 24/07/2018 14:47

Utter tosh

Allowing their cat to shit in my yard every day and dig up my flowers is harassment.

Why shouldn't cat owner have to deal with THEIR pets shite?

ArfArfBarf · 24/07/2018 14:48

Again, middening

Skittlesandbeer · 24/07/2018 14:52

I couldn’t live like this- either as the OP (not knowing who is returning the poo) or the neighbour (finding poo all over my property).

I’d be putting up cameras.

As the OP, I’d identify the neighbour and go around to have a word. Id ask politely whether they were equally distributing the poo among the various nearby cat households, or did they have reason to think it was always and only your cat? I’d assure them that your cat used its tray, and that you were considering other ways to contain said kitty better.

lilyheather1 · 24/07/2018 14:54

I've never understood how with every other pet owners are responsible for their animal's mess, but somehow cat owners aren't held to the same standards. If you don't want people to get pissed off at your cat shitting on their property, either don't get a cat or litter train it.

WillowPeach · 24/07/2018 14:55

SuburbanRhonda

Ha, no. They aren't blind or disabled. Bit of a narrow minded view that. I guess they're the only safety concerns you could think of? I guess you want dogs to roam free too? (so long as they're not blind or disabled of course).

I'll enlighten you...

  • Plenty of animals get killed from traffic, when you let them out - you have no control over where they go
  • People are arseholes, some enjoy winding animals up, others chase them and some go to the extremes of poison or fireworks
  • Pedigree animals are at risk of being stolen - some breeds are too docile to be outdoor cats (ragdoll for instance)
  • The risk of contracting disease is increased, also the risk of fleas, ticks etc
  • You have no control over what garbage they attempt to eat
  • Risk of attacks from other animals

No thanks.

Pretty sure my cats prefer their nice, comfy - safe - spot on my sofa.

Jengnr · 24/07/2018 14:55

You could do something really really simple. Keep your pet indoors.

You don’t want to do that because you don’t want to be responsible for it. You want someone else to do it. You’re upset because they don’t want to do it.

JacquesHammer · 24/07/2018 14:56

What really startles me is the sheer entitlement of some cat owners.

DD and I are thinking about getting a dog. We are doing a LOT of research. Neighbours on one side overheard us talking and asked me if I would reconsider as it might upset their cat. Grin
