ALMOST in tears over a can of tuna

I know I'm being crazy and unreasonable but I just need to rant. DP asked what I wanted from the shops for dinner (he was going out). I'm trying to eat healthily so opted for tuna salad, I specified that I wanted tuna in sunflower oil and spinach, he came back with rocket and tuna in brine. I'm not proud of myself and I would like to attribute my actions entirely to being hangry (have only had toast today) but I threw what can only be described as a fit. He swanned off to a steakhouse and I was left with my plate of weeds. Why does he consistently do this? Always bringing back the kind-of-right-but-wrong-thing? Especially as I always go out of my way for him. Anyway, I know I'm an immature nutter right now and should be grateful to have a plate of food but I just need to wallow in self-pity.

part of the reason your having emotional extremes, besides the dumbfuck husband.is you are hungry.
call and make him bring you birthday cake and a steak you would feel so mich better.

aryto · 24/07/2018 01:01

Glad to know I'm not alone in being a fusspot whilst pregnant.

Also, I'm not dieting just trying to make healthier choices when my morning sickness allows. E.g. tonight what I really fancied was a -family size- bag of salt and vinegar sticks but opted for tuna salad instead.

I was once in the middle of cleaning out pet cages while my gloves were being ripped to shreds by tiny teeth. I sent my husband out for more gloves. He came back with crisps that had jokes written on them. No gloves. Imagine my face. That husband is now an ex-husband.

timeisnotaline · 24/07/2018 01:05

I dunno , it took years for my oh to learn to pick Tuna in oil over spring water, he just didn’t notice. Ditto spinach and rocket! But, the op is pregnant so a meltdown at this substitution is completely reasonable!!

Semster · 24/07/2018 02:31

It's amazing how specific your food needs can be when you're pregnant.

I remember turning to DH and saying 'I need Mexican food NOW!' We were in New York so he grabbed his guidebook in a panic (this was before iPhones) and found a restaurant then desperately hailed a cab then got us there as fast as possible. The alternative was just too horrible to contemplate.

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/07/2018 02:46

The only time DH gritted his teeth during my pregnancy was when the only thing I could keep down was a very specific type of popcorn, he bought a huge catering size box of it, I took one look and ran to the bathroom to throw up. He ate all that popcorn Grin

So no, YADNBU.

Fivelittleduckies · 24/07/2018 03:07

You’re pregnant therefore it was more imperative that he got it exactly right. You want what you want, it’s as simple as that. Rules of reasonable behaviour around food can definitely be broken when pregnant...in fact I would say it’s a pregnant woman’s right.

yanbu and I hope he’s made it up to you since Wink

Fivelittleduckies · 24/07/2018 03:13

Tinned tuna is not so healthy when you're pregnant.

As a dietitian I can assure you tinned tuna is perfectly safe and healthy to eat during pregnancy, so long as it fits within the standard recommendation of 2-3 serves of fish per week.

MarcieBlue · 24/07/2018 03:18

Ynbu

When I'm on a diet and something is slightly wrong I will ACTUALLY cry. So much thought goes I to it and eating has to be worth it.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 24/07/2018 03:24

If this was twisted around the other way and ops dh threw a tin of tuna in temper regardless of the reason. The replies would have been very different

likelyLilac · 24/07/2018 03:35

Awwlookatmybabyspider I think you misread, she said she threw a temper tantrum over a tin of tuna, she didn't throw the tuna, had she done that yes it would be a very different conversation I hope

MarcieBlue · 24/07/2018 03:42

Awwlook

But most people would get the right thing if specifically asked. (If available)

wombat1a · 24/07/2018 04:46

Exactly the sort of reason why I don't ask my DH what they want, if I ask I get told such a specific list of things it takes forever to find it exactly and 50% of the time they've made a slight mistake so I can't find it anyway. So if they want something it has to be in general terms (tune something or other) none of this 'must be in sauce X' Bah, take your food and eat it like a good boy.

KickAssAngel · 24/07/2018 05:25

When I first went on the pill I had hormone overload.I once cried for THREE HOURS because of a raspberry yogurt.

usernameismyusername · 24/07/2018 05:43

Tuna is fine when pregnant. You're allowed two tins a week (Mercury). I cried over food when pregnant. Why did he go off to a steakhouse?!

LongSummerDays · 24/07/2018 06:59

I sent my (ex) to get some grapefruit juice, a real strong craving for chilled grapefruit juice.

He got back from the shops and did a huge "tah-dah" while handing me a glass of grape juice. I cried. It was the first day I wasn't actually puking all the time and I was so thirsty and longing for the grapefruit!

counterpoint · 24/07/2018 07:21

Any food, such as tinned tuna, that has had to be assigned limited intake (by an advisory panel) because of high levels of toxic heavy metals, such as mercury, is not deemed a 'healthy' choice imho.

If you must eat tuna whilst pregnant, and intend to follow the safety limits, then at least eat fresh tuna which retains some essential oils (these are destroyed by the canning process).

Badgerthebodger · 24/07/2018 07:33

God all these people coming to tell you not to eat tuna! As long as you’re not mainlining the stuff I’m sure it’s fine. Pregnancy hormones are a bugger, I had SUCH bad rage on occasion over the tiniest things not being right. But my favourite time was when I was just so tired and felt so sick that I sort of slithered dramatically down the door frame, crying my eyes out and wailing at DH that I couldn’t possibly get undressed because it was too haaaaaaaard Grin I made him take my clothes off and put me in my PJs, then decided I really needed a specific flavour of crisps. Luckily they were in the house but I swear to god if he had come back with a different flavour I could not have been held responsible for my actions Grin Don’t worry OP, many many pregnant women have been there. You want what you want!

usernameismyusername · 24/07/2018 07:36

Canned tuna is actually lower in mercury. Southern blue fin tuna, is high in mercury, but this isn't canned.

counterpoint · 24/07/2018 10:06

Canned tuna is actually lower in mercury

The law of relativity ... lower than what? A thermometer?

And no one is telling the OP to NOT eat tuna!

But when blanket statements are made about its health benefits, on a forum frequented by mums-to-be, then it's only right to mention findings that contradict this.

Fivelittleduckies · 24/07/2018 10:13

not deemed a 'healthy' choice imho.

Ok then, but according to the opinion of health professionals it is a healthy choice.

Most healthy foods are advised to be eaten in moderation. Healthy eating is exactly that Wink

Anyway...not sure this thread is intended to be about the tuna itself- I just would hate for OP to fear eating it as a result of ill advice...

SpongeAndBubbles · 24/07/2018 10:24

Can't tell you how many times this happened when I was pregnant with DD

I once sent the partner off to McDonald's and he got everything almost right but my burger didn't have gerkins on it Sad I was so distraught "I can't eat this now! " so he put his gerkins on mine Grin

I also remember once asking for salt and vinegar crisps and he came back with the walkers cucumber and sour cream sandwich ones Confused

I did love those but not while pregnant bleh

I live by if you want something doing properly you sadly have to do so yourself haha Grin

TotHappy · 24/07/2018 10:25

The advice on NHS website when i was pregnant was 2-3 servings a week of oily fish because of mercury, including fresh tuna, but they excepted tinned tuna because it didn't have the mercury risk.

Sorry op...!

counterpoint · 24/07/2018 10:53

The independent studies I've seen (not ones funded by canneries) do reveal levels of mercury (plus other toxins; dioxins etc) in tuna (and other apex predators) both farmed and wild, that would suggest to me to avoid them in pregnancy and for young kids.

So, not my definition of a healthy choice, that's all. But, I know there's worse things one can eat/drink/smoke/breathe.
