I have been promoted.

My line manager wants me to manage someone who is 10 years older than me, more experienced in the field than me and is really patronising towards me and also very full of herself.

MN please help me with tips.

I can do it but ARGH

@flaggerblasted how do you know that?

I've been managed by people younger than me but it hasn't bothered me because I don't like spending my time in meetings, trying to get resources, dealing with budgets and diffusing shit instead I prefer to get things done.

I should add I've also managed people and some have been older.

As long as your management style isn't one of micromanaging then dealing with more experienced people is fine. However you then do get pissed off if you have to deal with people who expect you to micromanage everything, when they should be capable of thinking for themselves.

They chose YOU

Be professional and polite and keep a distance personally

Also any issues keep a little log somewhere

And try to be kind as it must sting for them

A very similar situation happened at my work and I said to my new boss... "if they don't like it then that's their problem. At the end of the day you are the manager and we do as you say. She will get over it."

It depends on your line of work though. Our team is very much an independent one. Our work is allocated to us and we just get on with it. Managers are only really approached if there's a problem or we need to take annual leave.

Being managed by someone less experienced than me and also quite ...

I’m not a manager, but if I was I would like to appreciate what each individual can bring to the team. You have the advantage of knowing her strengths, encourage them.
