To ask how you would approach this job interview presentation?

I have 10-12 minutes for the presentation and have to outline a current topic of my choosing related to the sector and then in the same 10-12 minutes discuss how if I got the job I would deliver a session on this topic.

Actually delivering a session on any topic in this sector is really going to take an hour plus. So I can’t deliver a presentation on the topic.

So is it ok to spend ten minutes saying I would choose this topic which I believe is important and relevant because of xyz.

Then go on to say if I was delivering a topic on this my session would look at (for example) current stats, a large bit of research and how thats led to recommendations, how implementing these recommendations could make a difference, to say that I would demonstrate how to teach the change in practice (but not actually demonstrate it as I won’t have time), that I would if I was doing a session get participants involved in some simulations so they can get hands on at doing the new change in practice, that I would assess their understanding by watching them being hands on and use a check list so as to be objective and that I would then have opportunity for questions and give a hand out to reinforce the session.

I just have such limited time that I feel all I can do is skirt over any topic. I’d rather they said they wanted me to spend an hour teaching the topic.

I suppose I could also do a full hour teaching ppt presentstion and give the interview panel that as a handover saying if I was doing an hour session this is what I would cover in detail? Or is that overkill?

The key word is "outline" - your interviewers will know you can't discuss a topic to full detail in the time frame they've given you. I think your plan on how to tackle this is spot on - I wouldn't bother with the hour long presentation - the interview panel probably don't have time to look at it, and won't be able to give you any credit for it compared to candidates that followed the actual brief. However, there may be things that you would have covered in the hour long presentation that you can use as answers to other questions you might be asked.

Your approach is good. Remember to highlight key points / hot topics etc and be prepared to expand on these in follow up questions.

Thanks, it’s just reassuring to run it past someone else as I’ve been stressing over this for a few days and not really got anywhere....just going round in circles thinking how to approach it but think this is what I need to do. Really want the job! Aggghh.
