Keeping milk cool on the doorstep?

Rolypolybabies · 23/07/2018 20:58

Please help. Posting for traffic. Does anyone remember the old milk keepers that were insulating boxes that the milkman put two bottles in?

My doorstep faces east and have had curdled milk twice this week Confused

Where oh where can I get one? So far I have tried the milkman, local dairy, eBay, etsy and Amazon. My husband used to be a milkman and he has no idea either!

Thanks

It’s 2018 why do you still have a milkman it’s far cheaper to go to any supermarket even Waitrose and get milk.

GrainneWail · 23/07/2018 21:01

Could you use a cool box? Assuming it's not likely to be nicked?

BlueBug45 · 23/07/2018 21:02

@ManyCrisps it is a thing now to have a milkman again. Mainly because the bottles are (properly) recycled and they deliver a range of items.

keiratwiceknightly · 23/07/2018 21:03

Milk and more do my deliveries. And they offer a cool bag which sits in my doorstep. All milk goes in there and stays cool for hours.

Catfacecats · 23/07/2018 21:03

I assume because she would rather support her local dairy as opposed to buying from a massive chain ManyCrisps?

ManyCrisps · 23/07/2018 21:05

@BlueBug45 I know I keep getting reminded of that when I get woken up by the humming of the milkman about 4 am. I just think it’s pointless when it’s far cheaper to buy it from supermarkets that could also deliver.

catlady34 · 23/07/2018 21:05

Catfacecats her local dairy? The few milkmen are a part of massive chains. Milk & More is owned by Muller.

Rolypolybabies · 23/07/2018 21:05

Always had a milkman, as I said husband used to be one and have continued with same company ever since. But it seems business has picked up massively since the new year, mostly from people wanting to avoid plastic.

Yes a cool box is probably the best idea.

I remember having one growing up...it used to self lock when bottles in and lid closed, then you could open it with a key.
Milk in glass bottles is more eco friendly too I guess

ByDayByNight · 23/07/2018 21:08

I had no idea this service still existed. I remember washing out the milk bottles, the recycling impact of the plastic bottles and potential of plastic leakage into the milk . I guess one milk float doing the rounds is better environmentally.

BlueBug45 · 23/07/2018 21:11

@ManyCrisps the idea of the milkman is that you get it delivered daily or at whatever regular frequency you need without having to go to a shop. Plus if you get a supermarket delivery you have to buy a certain value of items not just two pints of milk.

Fluffyears · 23/07/2018 21:11

We get a delivery from the local dairy in glsss bottles and they recycle the bottles. Saves plastic being thrown out ♻️

RB68 · 23/07/2018 21:11

I would just use a cool bag of some sort or get your milk in earlier!!

Every time its curdled though I would complain because it means they are leaving it either the night before and its out all night (not an issue till this heat) or very very early. If they tell you when they deliver then plan to bring it in, or as I say get a cool box.

As to why have one - we live in country and often get cut off in terms of being able to get out in our vehicles etc milko offers a few other basics other than milk and delivers in a 4x4 in bad weather as they come from the FARM not some big mogul company.

fantasia243 · 23/07/2018 21:19

My neighbour has a milkman who delivers about midnight. I often hear him as I go to bed. The milk has been on the doorstep for 7 hours by the time she brings it in. Fine in the winter, but now when it's not dropping to less than 15C even in the depths of night, not so!

snowgirl1 · 25/07/2018 22:59

I bought one of those insulated boxes that takes two bottles from eBay. It did take a while for one to be listed for sale.

Katinkka · 25/07/2018 23:01

I’ve cancelled milk for the summer but years ago we had a thing screwed to the wall which would take two bottles. From milk and more I think.

Botanicbaby · 25/07/2018 23:06

Get up earlier Wink

heroineinahalfshell · 25/07/2018 23:20

Can't help with the cool box (I've taken to setting an alarm and collecting milk in when he delivers at 6amish), but I bloody love our milk delivery. Yes we could get supermarket deliveries but our consumption goes up or down depending on whether we're both having cereal at breakfast, or one of us is on a toast or eggs kick. I was so sick of running to shop on way home just for milk if supermarket delivery milk ran out. This way the milk is fresher (a couple of pints 4x a week) and i have til 9pm the night before to adjust the delivery, and I feel better about using less plastic. And I'm supporting local dairies & farms (ours is a small local dairy rather than a milk and more). Yes it's pricier but it's worth it!

pennycarbonara · 25/07/2018 23:34

Yes, there are local independent dairies too. You should be able to find them on Yell, www.findmeamilkman.net/ (although they do have some out of date listings) , and listed on local food and sustainability sites if there are any in the area.

here is an old thread about these: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/housekeeping/1746998-Doorstep-cool-box-for-milk

If you search for milk minder on Amazon it brings various mini coolboxes, although not the ones branded Milk Minder
www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?tag=mumsnetforum-21&url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=milk+minder

pennycarbonara · 25/07/2018 23:37

(I would have to put a label over the 'playmate' subbrand name on those; I couldn't be bothered dealing with the potential innuendos.
Probably other mini coolboxes are available anyway.

Griefbacon · 25/07/2018 23:41

My neighbour has a terracotta cooler thing and says it works

IndieRar · 25/07/2018 23:49

I have a lovely milk box made by Forget me knot after the birds kept pinching it. Can fit milk, eggs and additional bits in it. Perfect! www.facebook.com/UKForgetMeKnot/

Rolypolybabies · 27/07/2018 16:52

Thank you all!
