People on here that are not mothers?
Don’t get me wrong, I like that there is a variety but it’s mums net!!!
Why do you register to use it if your not a mum?!
Again I am not saying it wrong or it shouldn’t happen but I just wonder why do you register to post and use mums net if the clue is in the name?!
Genuinely asking!

Maybe I worded it wrong

Simplified maybe I should’ve asked

What made you sign up for mumsnet - as the name seems a bit specific
That’s all I meant.

Like a lot of people I came here after googling something non-parenting related, probably something like “Best hoover for dog hair”. The search threw up a Mumsnet discussion on this topic. I clicked on it and ended up having a bit of a mooch around the wider forum.

Despite not being a parent, and not intending to have kids any time soon, I was attracted by the wide ranging discussion on a huge variety of threads, the humour, surprises, different points of view, life experiences, politics etc etc.

I lurked for ages before something came up that I felt compelled to post on (can’t remember what it was but probably someone asking for advice on something I had direct experience of). So I got myself an account and started tentatively posting and here I am a few years later a proper Mumsnet community member and daily visitor.

I expect that there are thousands of members who followed a similar route to Mumsnet. We did not feel like we were making a deliberate decision to join a parenting forum, just got sucked in by the general excellence of Mumsnet Grin

I have been a member for maybe 8 years (?) and am now a parent (had my first child 2 months ago). I still spend most of my time reading topics that have nothing to do with kids or families.

Does that help shed some light?

I came across Mumsnet by accident around 8-9 years ago. I was unable to sleep and looking for something amusing to read and found Mumsnet Classics. I do have kids but rarely on here in regards to any parenting. I, personally, love threads about Facebook Shite pedlars.

Cross posted. We said almost exactly the same thing (though you managed it more succinctly!)

I think op just means it wouldn't occur to some people to join a site that sounds like it's just for mums unless you were a parent or planning on becoming one.

It's a very well-known site, and it's widely known for having threads about a huge range of topics. I knew this years before I started reading the site.

freethehouseelves · 23/07/2018 23:39

I found myself clicking on news/ Facebook articles to read stories that turned out to be threads on here and signed up to have a look.

I don't post, just find the threads generally an interesting read.

Well clearly not that well known Grin
As I didn’t have a clue Hmm

I don't have kids and don't use the parts of the site about parenting

I'm purely here for the AIBU board and that's about ANYTHING so I find that interesting

BadLad · 23/07/2018 23:58

Clearly you didn't know it, but that isn't a criterion that something has to meet to qualify as well-known.

I found mumsnet when I was pregnant. I would be googling things and mumsnet always came up and I liked the layout of the forum etc. So when I googled things I would look out for mumsnet and go to it for advice. I then came across my first woo thread and hated losing the page. So I joined up and made the most of the watch function. I read loads of stuff on here and most of it has nothing to do with parenting. It’s a great all rounder and I post a bit now and I’m on here everyday. I have two kids now but mostly here for the laughs.

Thank you to everyone who has been helpful
And thank you to those who were not so helpful as it shows that it really takes all sorts to make the world
My eyes have been opened and I will never again regard mumsnet as for mums only
As clearly it isn’t
