To cancel a trip because it's too hot

Friend and I have planned to go to London zoo with our DCs this week. My DS is 4 and is generally a good walker. I also have a 2 year old. I only have a single buggy so dc2 will be in it. Is it silly to sack off plans due to a bit of hot weather or should be get out and enjoy it? Does anyone have any tips about visiting London zoo with young kids?

The zoo wouldn't bother me, the tube would in this heat. Depends how far you have to travel.

Bambamber · 23/07/2018 18:39

I honestly wouldn't bother with the zoo in this heat. Mainly because anytime I've been to the zoo when it's not, I haven't seen a lot of animals as they were asleep

gamerwidow · 23/07/2018 18:39

Don’t go it’ll be miserable with two little ones in this heat.

ClarkWGriswold · 23/07/2018 18:40

I'm in London and no way would I go. The trains and tubes are unbearable at the moment. I'm leaving for work really early and staying in my air conditioned office and dread getting the train home.

HerRoyalNotness · 23/07/2018 18:41

See if you can get A fan spray bottle or 2 to take with you. Very good for misting down and keeping cool, I get mine at a sports store. Also try to find a portable fan that clips onto the stroller for your littlest.

Singlenotsingle · 23/07/2018 18:41

It's supposed to be getting hotter as the week goes on. 34 degrees on Wednesday

namechanged456 · 23/07/2018 18:44

@Bambamber that's a good point about the animals. It'd be a waste if they were all asleep or inside!

Their was an extreme weather warning today to last the week. We are supposed to stay home and cool till the weekend.

hidinginthenightgarden · 23/07/2018 18:45

I wouldn't go. I am up north and our zoo has not enough shade at all. We won't be going this week.

HoleyCoMoley · 23/07/2018 18:48

I wouldn't go, the tubes, buses are horrid in the heat plus when You get there the queue can be long, the animals asleep or hiding in the shade and the zoo is mega expensive. There are parks in London that have animals, they are free, not crowded, plenty of room to run around, are you coming just for the day or staying overnight.

Littlebelina · 23/07/2018 18:50

We went to our local zoo (we are members) last weekend and only stayed an hour. It wasn't as hot as it'll be this week and I found it miserable and half the animals were asleep. The only advantage was the zoo was quiet. With kids that age and the cost of the zoo I would leave it and plan something cooler instead.

Mamabear14 · 23/07/2018 18:53

We are going to the zoo on Friday (in devon) I think we have it a bit cooler than you. It will be fine, hats and sun cream and plenty of ice cream stops. The tube would really bother me though. No way would I sit in that misery with young kids.

Smallinthesmoke · 23/07/2018 18:56

If you do end up going, take swimsuits and towels for the kids as there is a small-but-life-saving splash play area.
Aquarium will be the coolest house, I would imagine. Sitting in the Giraffe House is very relaxing too. Take a picnic and find a spot on the lawns, save your lunch money for over-priced lollies.

Hellywelly10 · 23/07/2018 19:06

Does your friend live near you? You Could go to a local park in the morning before it gets too hot.

causeimunderyourspell · 23/07/2018 19:49

I would leave it, potentially you'll be exposed all day long if there's not a lot of shade. As pps have mentioned, lots of animals in hiding from the sun. Shit loads of wasps everywhere. No thank you!!

Burrumpeel · 23/07/2018 20:00

I've cancelled two London trips 'cos I couldn't face the tube in this heat. so I don't think YBU.

Burrumpeel · 23/07/2018 20:01

Good point cause, animals ain't stupid, they'll all be indoors in the shade!

anotherangel2 · 23/07/2018 20:03

Met office have just realised a health warning to stay out of the sun this week.

Myotherusernameisbest · 23/07/2018 20:18

TBH with a 4 and 2 year old I'd cancel the zoo plans and buy a little paddling pool instead and spend the day splashing about in the garden. Zoo will still be there when it's cooler .

ForalltheSaints · 23/07/2018 20:21

There are several weeks left to go to the zoo, or even in the autumn. Apart from the Met Office warning the animals are probably asleep as someone else has said.

noblegiraffe · 23/07/2018 20:24

Are all tube trains terrible at the moment? I thought circle line had air con?

VeryHangryCaterpillar · 23/07/2018 20:25

I wouldn’t risk it, the sun is searing hot and the Bakerloo line is diabolical. My 2 year old definitely wouldn’t cope with a trip to the zoo this week.

MrsAidanTurner · 23/07/2018 20:29

A no here. Other cities I have been too seem to have lots of water fountains in summer for children, everywhere. There are not enough here, I am not sure if there is a splash pad at London zoo..

Racecardriver · 23/07/2018 20:30

Good weather for the zoo-surely you will be hotter if you stay at home?

namechanged456 · 24/07/2018 06:27

Thanks everyone. My friend and I agreed to save the trip for another day when we'd properly enjoy it. We have decided on the paddling pool idea! Much more relaxing 😎
