We are still able to holiday during school so looking at going in the Autumn. Is it worth the money, or hell on earth?

Any similar places you would recommend?

We went to the one in the lake district for a long weekend. It was a nice break but I don't think I could have done longer than that. There was a few of us there so there was always someone to look after the kids while we took turns to enjoy the spa which was fantastic

ineedaholidaynow · 22/07/2018 19:19

There is a similar place to CP in Devon called the Manor House Hotel (and sister hotel Ashbury Golf Hotel). The Manor House is a bit like an old style Butlins with its accommodation and doesn't have different restaurants, but does offer many activities and specialises in craft activities. It doesn't have such a great pool complex but the activities are much cheaper and you have Dartmoor right on your doorstep.

Downtheroadfirstonleft · 22/07/2018 19:20

We love Longleat. Sometimes we do lots of activities, sometimes almost none! We don't use the restaurants though, expensive and far too busy.

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 22/07/2018 19:21

Our favourite one is in Belgium (just outside Lommel). Much better value for money than the UK ones.

chaplin1409 · 22/07/2018 19:22

There is a place called bluestones in Wales which is like centre parks. A friend has been a few times and really likes it. We have been to use the pool and it was fab.

Violetglace · 22/07/2018 19:24

Short answer - yes it's fun!

Went a couple of times as a teen and enjoyed it but didn't think it was special (so disgustingly spoilt, clearly). Went last month with my 1 year old, in laws and 1 year old niece, it was fantastic fun. Lodges are comfy if not luxurious, the swimming pool is amazing, and I'd go back for the spa alone (I'd say this is a must for anyone visiting, we did three hours of an evening just meandering through the steam rooms and pool, it was fantastic). Walking through the forest with the little ones was just lovely and the every staff member we encountered went above and beyond to make sure we were happy. Ok it is expensive for what you get and if you prefer exotic all inclusive holidays, it may not be for you! But we found it relaxing and enjoyable for a stay-in-the-UK holiday :)

Yogagirl123 · 22/07/2018 19:24

CP is fab for young children, our favourite is Elveden. LL is too hilly and spreadout, Elveden has a central hub and fab pool. Not been to Woburn but I have heard the village and pool is small. Enjoy OP.

Mum2jenny · 22/07/2018 19:24

I love it and prefer Sherwood but my dh hates it so I tend to go with friends or my dc. Dh never goes!

eurochick · 22/07/2018 19:27

We've been to Longleat and Woburn. Those will be your nearest ones (we're in a similar area). I preferred Woburn. Longleat was just too big - I had a 45 min walk to pick up the car on leaving day! I was feeling rubbish (no sleep due to baby plus period pains) but there was no other option. Woburn was better as it is more compact. The swimming area is where we end up spending a lot of time. It's pretty good. The restaurants are pretty crap - chains like cafe rouge that we would never choose to eat at any other time but it's a pain to leave in the evenings with littlies.

Both have the safari parks nearby, which are great for little ones.

We found the setting unexceptional but we have squadrons of squirrels etc in the garden at home.

We'll probably end up going again though as it's a fairly low stress short break with kids. Upgrade to an exec lodge if you can.

fairgame84 · 22/07/2018 19:30

We love Center Parcs. DS loves the pool and I like that everything is just 'there', no travelling or faffing. We usually go the 1st weekend in December for DS birthday.
We've been to Elveden, Sherwood and Whinfell. Whinfell was my favourite. I wouldn't go back to Elveden as it was way too busy.

newyearwhoohoo · 22/07/2018 20:08

Op, thoroughly recommend European CPs. Previous two years been to the Belgian CP near Lommel as mentioned by PP; this year one in Holland. Their VIP cottages are I believe same level of luxury as the second most luxurious in UK. Apart from that everything else is very similar. €1400 for family of 4 inc 4 meals out & E/tunnel. Smile

quitefranklyabsurd · 22/07/2018 20:10

Bloody love it.

The best one (imho) is Elveden but I wouldn't drive past another to get to it if that makes sense.

Longleat is lovely but very hilly.

violet0805 · 22/07/2018 20:16

We've been twice, both times at Christmas, and it's lovely. Bloody expensive though. The only thing that's included in the price is swimming. We ate at the restaurants a couple of nights and cooked in the lodge the other nights.
Would love to go back but won't out of protest. The price hikes are disgusting. I looked to go last year, week after autumn half term was £359, week of half term was £1399!! Bloody piss takers 😡

user1471426142 · 22/07/2018 20:18

Went to Woburn and was a bit underwhelmed to be honest. If wasn’t very forrest like as it was still quite new, couldn’t really swim in the pool and the spa was mainly steam room/saunas rather than hydrotherapy which I like more. The cabins were nice and it was easy but I thought the cost was a bit high for lots of the activities and felt more should be included. I’d have liked to have seen more playgrounds as well. Maybe if you live somewhere more urban the countryside aspect would be nice but Woburn was more built up than where I live with shorter cycle rides etc. I’d try it once more but only if I got a good deal.

RedSkyLastNight · 22/07/2018 20:22

If you like paying a small fortune for not great accommodation and enjoy doing lot of organised activities with lots of other people (again for a small fortune) whilst having the choice of either selfcatering or eating in busy bog standard chain type restaurants ... then yes, it's great fun!

If you don't have a small fortune you want to spend and would rather have a more individual type holiday, then not remotely fun.

HollyGibney · 22/07/2018 20:24

We loved it. We don't do many activities, zip line and painting pottery last time, just being there and using the swimming complex is enough for my kids, we do get a cabana for a couple of the evening sessions. We go late in the day when everyone is at dinner and the pool is pretty empty and for us it's well worth it. We have BBQs, go for walks and scoots around, grab a big icy soft drink in the sports bar, ice cream, go bowling and generally just chill. I do not rate the restaurants, except the sports bar for lunch. I genuinely found it one of the most relaxing places I had ever been.

AVT5 · 22/07/2018 20:24

We used to go a lot, 4/5 times a year but now go to forest holidays. More natural and better quality

Fluffyrainbows · 22/07/2018 20:32

I wouldn't say it was fun, no. My children. Have all enjoyed it, they liked the pool. It's ok out of season. It's overpriced. If you stay in the cheaper cabins it's a long way out from the pool etc.

BoxsetsAndPopcorn · 22/07/2018 22:28

It's overpriced imo but nice as a one off.

I'm glad we booke lots of activities though otherwise there's just a packed pool really. Lots of places to eat there as we don't like to cook on holiday.

ballroompink · 22/07/2018 22:32

Have been to Woburn just for a day to meet up with friends and I felt I could go for a weekend but no longer. The pool was fun but you couldn't swim in it really, the site was nice and our friends' lodge was gorgeous but the site didn't feel very big and I would feel hemmed in and unable to get away from people. We are quite outdoorsy and used to long countryside walks etc.

BiddyPop · 23/07/2018 09:08

Expensive but we enjoy it. We’ve been to Sherwood (twice) and Longleat (once) and plan on going to Roscommon when that opens in Ireland.

We mostly self cater, doing a grocery shop en route for nice, easy to prepare things. We generally had one meal a day “out” - one pancake house breakfast, dinner a couple of times in foresters lodge, and lunch or dinner somewhere other days. And some days a coffe/cake stop or ice cream break, (or last time, DH and I got to drink wine at the lakeside bar while dd sailed!).

Activities are expensive, but again we budget for about one a day. One evening we go bowling. Some days we rent boats/kayaks. Other days dd goes on an activity led by CP staff (occasionally with one/both of us too). If I’m organized, I might get a massage or facial in the spa one day - twice I’ve failed and once managed it (very busy).

We rent bikes, as they’re too awkward on the ferry (we have taken them before but the rent is worth it to us - no worries if we stop somewhere else for an extra few days).

And we spend a lot of time outdoors - walking and cycling - and in the pool. So for us, it’s a great holiday. Bring rain gear and it doesn’t matter if it pours.

Chalets are fine, for chalets. Relatively comfortable, plenty hot water, kitchen fine for holiday cooking, has a dishwasher. There is a tv/dvd player.

And it’s where dd started getting independent, going to the parc market in the mornings, for daily croissants and any small messages needed - which was fab for building her confidence (she was 10 at that stage).

Longleat was nice but hilly and spread out. Sherwood has a great raft ride in the pool. We liked both and would go back to both.
