To ask for help on reversing on a narrow country lane

Before I start, I accept the "you shouldn't be on the road' responses which are inevitable on driving threads. But I am fine and confident on the road, been driving long distances for years, just worried about this.

I need to travel for 2 miles along a single lane road with very rare passing places. Partner has gone to work, I have just decided to do this journey and need some reversing tips.

I was going to take some special reversing lessons as I will do this journey regularly in a few months. But I really need to do it today, and feel I am being pathetic avoiding it.

Apart from reverse parking I have only once in 15 years of driving had to reverse a long distance. It has just never happened!

So please can I have some technical tips? Thanks.

Would it help to have a one off driving lesson just to focus on this?

I was thinking about this thread yesterday when in a queue of five cars who had to reverse around a bend because of a driver who couldn’t reverse!

Well done, OP. I would also be terrified of this, DH does all the country lane driving (and he always turns around to reverse, left arm over the passenger seat, right arm steering. He’s a very good reverser, has reversed pretty far down country lanes at a reasonable speed).

Could you get your DP to take you out to practise?

Really hard work when you're towing bales & you meet someone who can't or won't reverse. It's so much harder to reverse a long trailer and it can be nigh on impossible to do it uphill.

Good that you're trying to work it out, you'll be a ninja before long.

I will definitely practise when we move there. My plan is to go up and down the road, reversing each section. It is a really quiet road- it only serves about 20 houses. In the summer there are lots of tourists though.

I drove back too, on Tuesday. Again, didn't have to reverse. I did the listening thing recommended, so twice pulled into a passing place as I knew a car was coming. Once, someone else reversed as they had just passed a passing place. I was very relieved!

@hooliodancer plleeeassee try left hand behind head rest, hand at top of steering wheel, and turn right round and look through back mirror. Literally so easy and fast!
