How to get the smell of cat wee out of the carpet?

Posting for traffic. Help!! We don't own a cat but we're pretty sure a cat has got into DD2's bedroom and weed under her bed when her windows have been open during the day. We have tried lots of things: washing carpet twice, putting bicarb down, putting talc down, spraying it with zoflora pet solution, spraying it with special cat wee spray, taking up the carpet and spraying the underneath and underlay. All this has only had a slight effect on the smell! We have left her windows and door open to air it but nothing is working! The smell of ammonia is horrendous. Please, please, does anyone have any ideas?

I'd get professional carpet cleaners in!

Lovestosing · 21/07/2018 12:39

Popfan I want to but not so DH doesn't want to! Angry

I’ve always found using the enzyme cat pee remover stuff and then carpet cleaner worked fine. Are you sure there’s not more areas that you’ve missed which are making the smell?

ItchySeveredFoot · 21/07/2018 12:40

I was gonna suggest pretty much everything you've already tried Sad. I use an enzyme spray for cleaning our litter trays but it sounds as though that's what you've used.
My mum took a stray cat to the vet and it sprayed in her car. It was professionally cleaned twice and still smelled in hot weather till we got rid 2 years later. You might need a new carpet I'm afraid.

Lovestosing · 21/07/2018 12:44

The DCs are going away on Monday with my in laws. I'm going to gut her room, clean everything in it (within reason!) and if that doesn't work I'm going to hire a professional carpet cleaner. If that doesn't work we'll just have to get rid of the carpet and DH will have to suck it up! Angry

You did all you could. It might be somewhere else. I used once vanish oxygell stain remover ( mixed together with the professional carpet cleaner in a carpet machine. Then I rinced liberally as if I was carpet cleaning machine.
For small spots I use a mixture of salt vanish oxy vinegar. In full I don't do one after the other I do one killer product with gloves and a mask. I leave it for 15 minutes than rince liberally. and spot dry. Water is life. There are already threads about wee. IF the underlay has a pool of wee, you are not cleaning it right now. You will need professional advice.

Bicarb - cheap & amazing.

Got the sick smell off my car seat from a yak incident.

Just sprinkle on & leave as long as possible before hoovering up

Gretagumbo · 21/07/2018 12:56

O dear you’ve tried that already

Sunshineface123 · 21/07/2018 12:59

Honestly...if you can afford it, replace your carpet and underlay and be very careful re windows in the future. We have two cats and unfortunately (when we've been on holiday) this has happened to us but on two separate rugs. They both had to be thrown away, I tried all the things mentioned here including professional cleaning.

Iwasjustabouttosaythat · 21/07/2018 13:00

We had to pull our carpet out and replace it when this happened, as well as cleaning the floor underneath. We had it professionally cleaned twice and that did nothing.

ToadOfSadness · 21/07/2018 13:03

Simple Solution pet spray/liquid. If used correctly it will remove it, use a black light to find any pee and treat accordingly. A small spray might not be enough.

Just one thing, neighbours have recently planted some box shrubs, box being the name of them, otherwise known as Buxus. I am getting the intermittent smell of cat piss wafting through the back bedroom windows, some Buxus varieties reek of cat wee, so it might not be in the house at all. I thought it was cat wee and went around the house checking, although haven't had a cat since last winter and she never pee'd anywhere she shouldn't, it also smells like male cat wee, and strong. I would suggest checking for shrubs with small rounded leaves, especially when it heats up outside.

dementedpixie · 21/07/2018 13:03

It could be cat spray which wouldn't necessarily be on the carpet. Check vertical surfaces too e.g. curtains, walls, chest of drawers, etc

SavvyBlancBlonde · 21/07/2018 13:04

The enzyme cleaners are fine if you get to the cat wee quickly. If not, then go professional cleaner with a guarantee of The smell going just in case.

I had to throw my rug out in the end. Nothing worked because I left it too long and the cleaner kicked up the carpet colours. Hope you have better luck than me

Got the sick smell off my car seat from a yak incident.

???

You can't just drop that in without explanation! I need to know Grin

dementedpixie · 21/07/2018 13:58

yak= puke=being sick (probably)

comehomemax · 21/07/2018 14:07

Sorry OP, we also had to replace our carpet. Cat wee gets down into the underlay and onto the floor boards and it’s bloody hard to remove. I scrubbed literally hundreds of times over a year with everything on the market and it still stunk as soon as the room warmed up.

tharsheblows · 21/07/2018 19:06

I use Odormute (I order it from the US: www.amazon.com/Odormute-Dog-Odor-Eliminator-15-Ounce/dp/B003ZU0BYM/ref=sr_1_sc_1?keywords=odormut&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1532196107&sr=8-1-spell ) with massive success on old dog wee smell. The smell gets worse before the solution dries so be prepared for that. I've tried so many enzyme removers and this one is the only one that works for me.

Scootingthebreeze · 21/07/2018 19:40

I had cat wee on a carpet previously. To get rid i had to make a solution of 2 parts white vinegar (the see through vinegar) and 1 part cold water. Pour it freely over the affected area so it's literally soaked then leave to dry naturally. The vinegar kills the bugs and the smell of ammonia.

Once dry (after 3-4 days but in this heat probably after 2) then sprinkle bicarb generously over and leave for at least 4-5 hours but preferably longer then hoover up. That neutralises the vinegar smell

This works for animal and human wee and vomit

lastnightidreamtofpotatoes · 21/07/2018 19:46

OP unfortunately I am a cat pee expert. White vinegar sprayed liberally over the offending area is the only thing that works for me. You will obviously need to leave the Windows open for a few days, then scrub with soap. You do need to ensure that you know the exact area that was peed on.

llangennith · 21/07/2018 19:52

Lift the carpet, it's probably fine through to the underlay.

Hope this link works! I had a poorly and elderly cat who kept weeing on our hallway carpet. I tried everything to get the smell out. I was just about to give up and get the whole hallway and stairs recarpeted when I was advised to try this. It really worked. It’s expensive, but not as expensive as a new carpet!

Kolo · 21/07/2018 20:04

Not sure the link works. It’s called four paws industrial super strength stain and odour remover.

Kolo · 21/07/2018 20:05

Sorry. No idea what I’m doing here.

justcontemplatingsomething · 21/07/2018 20:08

Just get the professionals in. I had to get them in to do my sofa, cost about £30 I think and it got rid of the smell immediately.
