“Impington Village College’s catchment area is defined as children living in the area of the following primary schools; Dry Drayton, Girton, Histon and Impington, Milton and Oakington.”
From www.impington.cambs.sch.uk/page/?title=College+Admissions&pid=376

Also see this page which has all the information about how to apply

And finally

I am moving to Cambridge
Xenia · 21/07/2018 12:29

Very few people would move children at that stage and age as there i a big risk you ruin their life chances. Is it not possible to throw yourself on the mercy of their existing schools to let them finish their current courses through to the final exams? Could their mother take a second job to help pay or someone else in the family continue the fees where they currently are?

Also most 15 and 17 year olds are pretty much utterly destroyed psychologically if they are forced to move away from their friends so I am not so sure these will be rushing to move to Cambridge a tthat age. They might refuse to go and stay with friends where they currently are even if it means moving to state schools and dropping back a year.

Exactly this.

Cambridge is very expensive to live in and it's an awful time to be moving your children and getting them to settle at a new school. I'd be moving heaven and earth to keep them where they are, including using the redundancy money to pay any fees and see what bursaries they can apply for.

Ivy3621 · 21/07/2018 12:39

Ophas already said they are at private schools. How can he not move if he hasn’t the funds to pay up to £20,000 each child, each year?

Reality doesn’t always allow for ideal.

Op, I think the best places I look are Histon (expensive), Milton and water beach. All close to city and nice villages.

Good luck!

NameChange30 · 21/07/2018 12:39

Cambs CC is saying IVC has no places. Have you actually spoken to them?

Cambridge18 · 21/07/2018 12:39

Emaa, nothing at all from her, she takes from me :)

Sorry, awful predictive text.

Cambridge18 · 21/07/2018 12:43

Yes I have sent them and the said for the elder is okay and ask us to fill application also the younger one they said if we are in the catchment area it will be okay !!!

Redundancy payments from pharmaceutical companies (big ones anyway) are usually pretty generous. I'm surprised that it wouldn't mostly cover a year of private school for two children.

Do they actually live with you at the moment? It seems like a pretty crazy idea tbh.

Smoothsailing9 · 21/07/2018 12:48

I live in Cambridgeshire (not that near Cambridge but still the same local authority). We moved within the county and they did not allow me to apply for an inter year school move until I’d actually moved house. I then found that they school I wanted had no places. The village colleges round Cambridge are usually very popular so I would do your research carefully before you commit to a move.

Saying that, Cambridge is a fantastic city with lots going on, although transport is notoriously bad. The busway that runs from st Ives through Swavesey, Histon etc into Cambridge is useful though. My brother lives in Milton and works in Madingley and he bikes to work.

autumnkate · 21/07/2018 12:52

Why Cambridge? It’s very expensive and there are other state schools offering the IB

Snog · 21/07/2018 13:03

Your oldest could restart sixth form and take A levels because there are three years of funded sixth form available in the state sector

Nsbgsyebebdnd · 21/07/2018 13:13

So of the list that pp put up of catchment locations all are nice. In which case they issue is more getting into Cambridge easily or being close to the train station. Depends on your work opportunities which are hard for you to know now. You should try and be based somewhere not too far from the biomedical campus (AZ). Cambridge journey times in rush hour Are soooo much
Longer than other times

Cambridge18 · 21/07/2018 13:16

Thank you all for your great help and ideas :)

Parkside in Cambridge offers the IB and is central, so not such a fixed catchment.

The villages outside Cambridge are cheaper than Cambridge itself.

What is a sales and collection manager? I am in pharmaceuticals and have never heard of it!

grumpy4squash · 12/08/2018 17:50

Where did you work before? How come they're not compensating you if they made you redundant?

Cambridge18 · 12/08/2018 18:56

Yes we already applied at parksied school and been in contact with them two days and now we are filling application and the sixth form day is on 24 August,
Sales and collection manager is sort of commercial as we are responsible for sales to customers and also collect dues as we sell on credit for three months.

I worked for very big company and the policy says in redundancy must be my monthly package multiple by two multiply by number of years
Example if I take £1000 a month total package
My redundancy has to 1000x2x number of years
They want me as normal indemnity policy upon one month x number of years ,
Which means half my money less

Tonbridge Girls School is very highly rated for IB and may be slightly cheaper to live than Cambridge.
Also very easy commute to London, plus other very good girls schools locally if you need non IB.

We are planning to move out of London and like the idea of going out towards Colchester, what are the nicest areas to live? Trying to weight up whether to stay around the town itself or look at outlying villages. Need to still get to London to work, and probably somewhere very remote would be too big a culture shock. Any tips welcome!

Trying to weight up whether to stay around the town itself or look at outlying villages. The main thing is the secondary school for my daughter.
