Old Age

Am I being unreasonable to think that I am not old? I am approaching my 60th birthday. Is 60 the end of middle age and the start of old age?

you can be old at 40 or young at 80. Everyone’s different. Don’t label yourself!

Just been reading quote from Joan Bakewell (in her 80s) in which she says that she gives no thought to age. That every day has 24 hours, and every hour has 60 minutes whether you are 10 or 100 and that all you can do is live it.

I am in my sixties. I am old when I want to be (if there's a concessionary rate for seniors) and young when I want to be (if someone's suggesting an adventure). I am lucky in that I have good health. I used to work full time in quite a stressful job until recently, and only really gave it up because statistically as you get older you are more likely to suffer from serious illness and I have many things I want to do before that happens.

As someone mentioned earlier in the thread, the problem is not being old but the fact that it is quite often used as an insult. Sadly, Mumsnet is one of the worst places for ageism that I know - any thread started by describing a person as elderly (or a 50 year old according to some posters) and you know that person is going to be belittled or patronised.

What an utterly brilliant quote.

Another one I remember told to me was 'A minute of my life is the same as a minute of your life - it's just that I started before you'.
