Embarrassed by the shakes

Sparklfairy · 20/07/2018 14:14

Not really an aibu but posting for traffic. In the last few weeks I've been suffering badly from 'the shakes'. My hands mostly (so bad I sometimes can't manage to roll a cigarette or drink a cup of coffee without it going everywhere) but also the rest of my body; knees knocking and torso shaking.

Then twice in the last week or so I've been walking and my right leg/foot starts to feel 'dead' - like it's fallen asleep iyswim. It gets steadily worse to the point where I'm scared to cross a road in case it gives up and I fall. I managed to sit down when it happened this morning but it still doesn't feel right- it's a bit numb but I can walk normally.

I have a pretty unhealthy lifestyle atm. My depression has worsened and I'm not eating properly. Alcohol reduces the shakes but it's not a long term solution. It's just so embarrassing. I ordered breakfast in a cafe this morning and struggled to cut up the food and bring the fork to my mouth, so ended up eating with my hands and leaving most of it.

Google is scaring me. Could be Parkinson's... MS (Which my nan had). It really is debilitating and embarrassing. I'm only 30 ffs.

What antidepressants are you taking? Sertraline gives me a tremor - it was worst when I started it and has largely settled now but it’s worse when I’m tired. It includes my legs too.

It really doesn’t sound like MS or Parkinson’s, sounds like it’s related to your insomnia and mental health/meds. Alcohol will help you get off to sleep but your sleep quality is affected so you don’t get a rest.

SaltyPeanut · 20/07/2018 14:45

I'm just wondering if you have got to the stage where you blame your anxiety for any and all physical symptoms you experience. That can happen and I'm here to tell you, it's not always the anxiety. Some symptoms can be made worse by anxiety certainly but the cause may actually be something unconnected to your mental state and needs looking into by a doctor.

That's just a stab in the dark from me though, I think you need to see a GP. I hope you can get an appointment and get the help you need.

Sparklfairy · 20/07/2018 14:45

No Bombardier25966 I drink 2-3 times a week but the shakes are every day. The numbness is new and only happened twice

@HoleyCoMoley I think you’ve minsunderstood my post. The GPS receptionist can get the appointment arranged, whether that’s as an emergency or by phone, or they can advise other ways to access medical treatment.
Since is a Friday afternoon this is absolutely the way to go, no need for 111 or similar

LovelyBath77 · 20/07/2018 14:49

Are you in any meds which can cause shakes as side effects? I'm on prozac and if I drink on it it makes me feel quite ill...

LovelyBath77 · 20/07/2018 14:50

Ok if you are on anti-ds and drinking it might be that? Maybe if you stop drinking it may improve...but would see the GP if it continues.

picklemepopcorn · 20/07/2018 14:50

The other thing that gives DS and me the shakes is too much blue asthma inhaler.

Thee are so many things it could be, some easily sorted.

LovelyBath77 · 20/07/2018 14:53

Here is the NHS guide which includes side effects, it does say about feeling tired and drowsy, and something about trembling and side effects. maybe best see the GP to clarify. Not sure good idea to drink on it though.

The tremors/shakes and dead leg feeling sound very much like MS. I have it and the shakes in my hands drive me nuts. Please see your GP urgently. Insist on an MRI and lumber puncture.

AyEssDee · 20/07/2018 15:03

Drinking alcohol, let alone that much, while on citalopram is a bad idea.
I'm on ADs too and can have the occasional glass of wine - any more and I wake up in the night with a racing heart.

No one here can say what is wrong though.

Please ring your GP practice - you do need to be seen urgently.

BrazzleDazzleDay · 20/07/2018 15:17

Sounds like essential tremor to me, I also have it. Im 31 btw. There's several et support groups on fb if you're on there?

Does the shaking stop after a drink?

When does it occur, while resting or while using the muscles?

AhoyDelBoy · 20/07/2018 15:23

That’s a lot of alcohol. Would definitely get to a GP ASAP. FWIW my mother suffers terribly with anxiety to the point she shakes almost continuously, so I don’t think your anxiety can be discounted. It sounds like more though. Hope you get answers soon Flowers

hungryhippie · 20/07/2018 15:24

My mum used to shake terribly before she was diagnosed with an overactive thyroid (graves disease) She had terrible insomnia too.

Sparklfairy · 20/07/2018 15:25

BrazzleDazzleDay I've had two pints and for the first time today I've got almost no shakes. I have them all the time but they get worse when I do 'close work' I.e. rolling a cigarette it becomes uncontrollable and impossible.

OP posts:
PaddyF0dder · 20/07/2018 15:27

You’ve had two pints already today, at 3 in the afternoon?

I hate to be so blunt, but are being honest about how much you’re drinking?

Souledout · 20/07/2018 15:28

Can you pre book an appointment?

YouCantMilkAUnicorn · 20/07/2018 15:32

Mine can be fine, and then I go to write or paint and my hand goes shakey. Drives me crazy.
Weirdly a friend of mine also with MS has leg tremors sometimes, a beer makes them settle down.

Slow down your drinking but you also must get checked out.

LoniceraJaponica · 20/07/2018 15:35

Have you contacted the GP yet?

Posting on here is not going to achieve anything other than posters advising you to make an appointment. So please do that - THIS AFTERNOON

Sparklfairy · 20/07/2018 15:38

PaddyF0dder I've stopped now.

OP posts:
Jaxhog · 20/07/2018 15:39

For goodness sake, get the earliest doctor's appointment you can! Tell the receptionist it's urgent. Don't use this as an excuse not to make an appointment, or you'll never go.

In the meantime, call 101.

Yogagirl123 · 20/07/2018 15:40

See your GP, hopefully you will be referred to a Neurologist who can arrange MRI, that should hopefully give you some answers.

I have MS, my symptoms aren’t as you described, so hopefully it won’t be MS.

Good luck OP ☘️
