AIBU to ask what you did for wisdom tooth extraction pain?

Lucky me had 3 wisdom teeth taken out today. I got prescribed Endone, a strong painkiller and took one but my God it made me sick. I dont want to take another.

Anything else I can take apart from just panadol? I'm not allowed a cup of tea either, just to add to the pain Shock

Arnica for the healing, I had both removed (impacted) and no swelling after. Are you on any antibiotics?

Thebookswereherfriends · 20/07/2018 13:47

I was given codeine which made me faint dead away with the first dose! I had all 4 wisdom teeth taken out at 18 and I basically just zoned out in front of the tv counting down the hours before I could take the next dose of paracetamol. That's probably not that helpful, but on the plus side it was much improved by day 3 or 4.

gunnyBear · 20/07/2018 13:50

I was in my early 20s but I got stoned...

I was a proper adult when my 4th was removed and didn't need more than over the counter paracetamol.

TheWonderfulCat · 20/07/2018 13:51

PinkGeorge yes I'm on antibiotics, 2 a day with food

Thebooks I had a similar experience. Except I woke up with stomach cramps, sweating and vomited. Honestly thought I was OD'ing which couldnt be possible as I'd only had one. Terrified me

Are you taking Metronidazole? It’s usually the antibiotic prescribed after wisdom teeth extraction. It made me so sick 🤢

TheWonderfulCat · 20/07/2018 14:17

I'm taking Alphaclave, its definitely not the antibiotic that made me sick, I had that after I threw up

I had tramadol. Prescribed by Dr who was horrified that the dental hospital had only give me Paracetamol for 3 impacted wisdom teeth and 13 stitches.
He called them sadists !..

I then got dry socket. That's a special kind of pain ...

didyouseetheflaresinthesky · 20/07/2018 17:42

I paired 3 ibuprofen up with 2 paracetamol and took that every 6 hours. Surprisingly heavy hitter, actually, it did more for me than the codeine.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 20/07/2018 17:49

I had one wisdom tooth out yesterday - it was a real fight too - not quite the dentist’s hardest extraction, but getting there - so I was pretty sore yesterday.

I tried paracetamol, but that didn’t touch it, so I waited 2 hours and had ibuprofen, which did help. I did the same, towards bedtime - ibuprofen and paracetamol 2 hours apart, and it did help enough that I could sleep.

AdidasGirl · 20/07/2018 17:52

I had all of mine taken out at once under general.
I already have Tramadol and Morphine at home for my condition and so I just kept taking that.
I looked like I had been beaten up.
Two huge black eyes and so much swelling.
Was worth it to get rid of wisdom teeth pain once and for all.

dingdongadingding · 20/07/2018 17:55

I had the top one out and the dentist ruptured my sinus.

Bloody awful and I was pregnant at the time.

SaltyPeanut · 20/07/2018 18:08

@fontofnoknowledge...Dry socket...ah, I remember my encounter with it well...a special kind of pain indeed...wanted to kill myself...and the "lovely" clove stinking shreds of cotton shit they used to pack it with...only made me heave every time air passed over it and carried it's delightful aroma to my nasal passages.

I still can't stand the smell of cloves and it was something like ten years ago.

It's difficult to find something that doesn't wear off too quickly. I've used boots soluble paracetamol with codiene extra (includes caffeine). I used to take a couple of fragments off the tablets and place them near to the extraction site and let dissolve then dissolve the rest in water and take that but you have to be careful not to swill the water around the wound before swallowing it. I'd then back it up after 2 hours with a couple of cheap supermarket ibuprofen. Sometimes worked, sometimes didn't.

Hope you feel better soon, I know how painful it is.

Fluffyears · 20/07/2018 18:35

Frozen peas on my face, it really helped and felt nice, swishing with warm salt water (although not too hard for first day as it can cause dry socket) and sleep propped up (I called 101 and the nurse told me this). I can’t take codeine donhad torely on paracetamol and ibuprofen which then made me really sick, not good when you have stitches in. It does pass so you’ll feel better soon.

adaline · 20/07/2018 18:39

Ibuprofen and paracetamol alternating every 2hrs - I can't take codeine as it makes me sick.

I didn't eat anything the first day, then avoided anything too hot or cold. I was okay after about 48 hours!

Montsti · 20/07/2018 18:40

I had all 4 of mine out a couple of months ago and the painkillers made me so dizzy...I ended up just taking paracetamol. I found the pain much less than the dizziness...

BlueBug45 · 20/07/2018 18:48

Ibuprofen and paracetamol alternately.

I refused to be sedated when I had my impacted one out so the dentist had to take more care. Also my nerve was bruised so I had numbness in parts of my mouth and some skin on my chin for about 2 months which probably helped reduce the pain.

Maliali · 20/07/2018 18:48

Definitely arnica tablets for the bruising as soon as you can get hold of some tablets. I had all 4 of mine out under GA many years back and the dentist told me to take arnica tablets before (obviously that ship has sailed in your case) and as soon as possible after the op for a week. I had minimal bruising I have to say even though I was very sceptical. For the pain I had co-codomol alternated with ibuprofen (if you are ok with it) helped. Plus sleeping propped up in bed as laying flat seemed to cause more pain. Soft, tepid food (sounds delicious) for a few days such as custard, mashed spuds/veg, yoghurts etc as your jaw may feel very stiff and you want soft stuff you can just post in. Hope you feel loads better soon. If in a few days you start with very bad pain, especially if it feels almost like earrache it could be a dry socket. Ring your dentist as soon as you can as they will re-pack it and the pain will go immediately. A dry socket is a complication of wisdom tooth removal. One of mine did it and it was immensely painful but very quickly relieved.

Maliali · 20/07/2018 18:50

In a few days IF you start with bad pain, I mean. I didn’t mean you will start with bad pain 😱

Butterfly77 · 20/07/2018 18:55

I was told to buy Paramol, really strong otc painkiller in a black box .... had never heard of it but worked a treat for me and I was climbing the walls just on paracetamol before buying them.

anotherangel2 · 20/07/2018 18:56

I was pregnant so only paracetamol.

iamyourequal · 20/07/2018 18:58

@ Pinkgeorge I agree : Metronidazole is a completely evil antibiotic. I took a bad reaction after being given this following a tooth extraction. I had a terrible headache, sickness and could feel the blood pumping around my body- I thought I was going to explode and ended up in bed for 2 days! OP ask your GP for some tramadol. It’s fab!

Treacletoots · 20/07/2018 18:58

I think I was incredibly lucky. I had mine out at 830 in the morning and was back at my desk by 1030, after taking paracetamol before the local anaesthetic wore off.

I alternated paracetamol and ibuprofen for the next 12 hours and really was fine with just these.
