About neighbour's speakerphone conference calls?

Neighbours 2 doors down work from home. Their office is at the end of their garden, and their house is up a slope and above ours. They are generally a noisy family but I reckon you just suck up the noise of kids playing in the garden. I've had to ask them to close their house windows once after the 20th rendition of 'Shape of You' and I once had to ask them to collect their out of control dog from our drive as it had our cat cornered. We say hi if we meet in the street, no daggers but it's unfortunate that most of our interactions so far have been me being an old bat.

They have long speakerphone conference calls (current one has been going on 45 mins) in their office with the windows open. We hear it all, wherever we go in the house. AIBU to mention it? Windows are open because of the heat, which doesn't help.

Am quite capable of writing v reasonable note, am also capable of going round to speak to them. But AIBU? Not sure if I'm just being grumpy old bat again.

I would buy silicone earplugs and put the radio on

Go and mow your lawn, for a long time 😂

Is the contents of the speakerphone calls anything confidential, maybe write a reasonably polite note, with a brief summary of what your now know, from their call, that you shouldn't. Hopefully that should shock them into not doing it again.

I think people sometimes don't realise how much sound travels. I'd certainly mention it to them on the basis that they may not be aware their (presumably) confidential business interactions can be heard by all and sundry.

tealandteal · 20/07/2018 12:12

I think it depends, if you are hearing about the annual paperclip sales conference, just tune it out. If you can hear private medical details for example, I would mention it.

Wingedharpy · 20/07/2018 12:12

Are they discussing commercially sensitive or confidential information OP?

catlady34 · 20/07/2018 12:16

I'd say go outside and make a lot of noise next time they do it - lawn mowing, music blaring etc. They'll soon close their windows.

RabbitsAreTasty · 20/07/2018 12:21

Make noise. Noise that disrupts the calls.

Shout over the fence to the neigbour "Ooh, did you hear that, CompanyX is in trouble. I hope you don't have shares in them!"

Depending on the content is could be a data protection or confidentiality breach.
Either knock on their door and tell them that their work phone calls can be heard by people in the street or post a letter through their door saying something like ‘ Are you aware that your conference phone calls are on loudspeaker and the whole street can hear ?’ And perhaps put a couple of examples of information heard ?

Thanks all. Unfortunately we don't have a lawn to mow! And I'd rather deal with it straight on. And no, it's not confidential stuff. I honestly do think they just don't know how far sound travels and that they're generally not very aware of how they affect their surroundings. It's a quirk of the landscape here (we're in a valley) that sound travels.

I'll tune it out with something else for the moment - radio 4 is always good for that sort of thing. Call is still going on! And next time I bump into one of them on the street I'll mention it.

Thanks all for the feedback.
