To think that year one into two children shouldn’t get holiday homework.

I hate that my six year old Dd gets holiday homework it’s always to dress up or make an outfit for their WOW days. I thought we’d get away with it in the summer holidays but no she has to dress up as a traditional tales character. I loathe making costumes and refuse to buy one.

I know they need to learn and don’t mind the weekly homework too much and yes they have got six weeks off but still don’t agree with it.

I want to send her as The Emperors New Clothes Wink

We have to give hmwk over the holidays due to SATs but I wouldn't give dressing up hmwk. Blond wig and packet of Quaker oats?

Yes I wouldn’t mind maths or English too much. Her report was good and gave us advice on what we can work on with her over the holidays. I don’t blame the school it just seems they have a lot more homework now. I don’t think I ever got any in primary school, though that was quite a few years ago...

I strongly disagree with homework in infants - we are going abroad to visit my family for the entire 6 weeks, if either of mine come out with homework tonight, I'm afraid it just won't get done. It's not coming in the suitcase with us!

Do you plan to visit any child-friendly museums, castles etc. over the summer? A lot of them have areas with dressing-up clothes. Just take a snap of your daughter there, then pick a character the outfit could represent!

Whenever we do costumes (World Book Day etc) we start with the outfits we have available and pick a character to fit.

So don't do it then.

Depends on what you mean by holiday homework. If it's reading a book a week to keep up reading skills over the holidays - fair enough. If it's a load of maths worksheets - bit much for year 1.

But it sounds like this is just making a costume? Keep it simple - just get her to make a witches hat out of cardboard (cone, painted black with some elastic to keep it on) and make a wand out of more cardboard and she can go in her uniform as Herminone (Is Harry Potter considered as 'traditional tales' yet?!!)

3 kids. 3 series of homework, one for each week. Went up the wall. This is why I am munching mumsnet talk to get some relief: So much real problems out there. Aside the Maths and creative writing one... This too shall pass. Wink

I can’t imagine how much it is with more than one child’s homework!

Good idea about Harry Potter. I wanted to go as the emperors new clothes but DD didn’t fancy that Grin

I will do it as I don’t want her to feel the only child in her class who hasn’t done it.

We will keep reading and practicing her writing and times tables in the holiday they were suggested as things to practice in her report. We can make them fun.

Using Lego is a fun way to teach times tables.
