It's a Blue Badge one!

Yesterday we got our wonderful mobility car for our pre-school age DS. We've applied for a blue badge but it's going to take up to 2 months to arrive apparently! I couldn't do it before hand because you need the reg number of the car.

Would IBU to park in a disabled bay when my son is with me and put his High Rate Mobility award notice in the window, with another sign saying 'waiting for blue badge to arrive!' or should I just wait it out??

Until we have it, I won't be able to take DS to shops by myself, he's severely autistic, is a runner and extremely strong so I'd find it difficult to get him safely to a trolley/into his SEN pram in the middle of a car park.

Sirzy, they only have to take one look at mum and they say it's absolutely fine and give me a note to put in the window. Her mental disability is the reason she wont apply for one for her obvious physical disability and she wont let me help her either. Very annoying but it's part of the disability, if that makes sense.

I'd never do it anywhere where it's very busy or not at a supermarket/mall type place where I can't check with someone of course! I use the p and c spaces then.

Magpiemagpie · 20/07/2018 13:56

I’ve just got my mum a blue badge
She didn’t have to give a car reg - it would be a bit hard seeing as she doesn’t have a car and can’t drive
I did it online and she got it in two weeks

Mishappening · 20/07/2018 13:58

That is very slow - my OH's was agreed on the phone; we sent photocopies of ID etc. and it arrived within 2 days! We were amazed! It does not have to take that amount of time. I am sorry you are having this wait.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 20/07/2018 14:05

Sorry, even though my DF is a blue badge holder, I’m a bit ignorant of the process obviously, but why do you have to,give your registration number?
I thought BB holders could travel in any car and display it? So DF has his own car but sometimes he might get in mine as a passenger, he still needs to park in a disabled bay for space and location so he displays it in mine. Is it different under different local authorities or Something?

Lunde · 20/07/2018 14:08

I was told that I was not allowed to use a disabled space until my BB had come through.

Becca19962014 · 20/07/2018 15:26

The car reg thing varies between counties. For mine it's essential unless you can prove you've no way of knowing which car you'll be using - I'm not allowed to drive and rely upon different people to help me, I needed to provide a letter that stated I wasn't allowed to drive and didn't have a specified driver.

In my town the reg is held and used to confirm if the badge is being used fraudlently, though of course it can legally be used in any car, so I've no idea where the logic is but I know traffic wardens here do have that information when they check the badge id.

I know tourists have fallen foul of this and been given tickets unnecessarily - every summer at least one will write a ranty letter to the local paper about it.

Becca19962014 · 20/07/2018 15:27

"Confirm it isn't being used fraudulently" not that it is!

DiamondsBestFriend · 20/07/2018 15:38

I have literally just applied for my blue badge and been approved so waiting for it to come through and I didn’t have to give a car registration number. I don’t drive and would predominantly be in my parents’ car but they didn’t ask.

Having said that someone I know in a different county had to go down and present their two forms of ID in person in order for a badge to be issued so sounds as if different councils have different rules...

Sirzy · 20/07/2018 15:47

I don’t blame them for writing rants letters! I think I would.

Becca19962014 · 20/07/2018 15:52

Me too! It's completely unreasonable. They just have zero understanding that a BB isn't necessarily an extension to a driving licence (of course some people can drive and qualify for one, many are not allowed to).

I had someone driving me being given a ticket once because I wasn't the one driving so it was being used illegally by them and was told to hand it over. The person I was with was the worst person to mess around with BB (they knew all the rules and regs) and it was sorted out straight away with an apology, but not everyone would do that.

RememberMyNames · 20/07/2018 16:03

For higher rate mobility you get a tax reduction from the DVLA and an automatic blue badge. So I'm guessing the paperwork is an all in one go thing, and they need the reg of the vehicle for the tax bit.

ImSoExhausted · 20/07/2018 17:06

I think it's just my Local Authority being thorough! It did say we can use it with any car though, which is a relief as we'll still sometimes use my Dad's if we're going out together with them (he has a 9 seater mini bus!)

I'm going to ring them on Monday morning and see if their guidelines for how long are accurate, hopefully it'll be a lot quicker than 2 months. Hoping to apply for a tunnel pass as well as we like to go over the water quite a lot to an attraction that's great for DS's sensory needs :)

Do not park in a blue badge space anywhere until you actually receive the badge. You can get fined by a traffic warden or a council car park warden as well as a warden in a private car park. They will not take the DLA into consideration at all, they are not allowed to and if you receive a fine it will not get you off paying it. You must have a blue badge to use a blue badge space.

Groovee · 20/07/2018 18:04

I have a blue badge and they ask for a rev number but it's not for just that car, it's for the person. My mum was being a cow to my auntie over my dad's one so I put her right on that.

Personally if there are 2 of you, use the parent and child ones as they have big spaces too. My friend got a sticker on her window when she forgot to display hers as she was busy trying to get herself out the car when she was in a lot of pain. It just caused her more distress x

Mishappening · 20/07/2018 18:08

It is wrong that this should vary so much from region to region. We just sent scans of ID by email and literally were told straight away.

EggysMom · 20/07/2018 18:09

Only those with a HRM DLA award know that it entitles the person to a Blue Badge - so putting the DLA notice in the window won't help.

Anyway, for future reference - you don't need a passport-style photograph for a BB, just a passport-sized one. Our son's first photo (age 3) was a crop from a holiday photograph, very brightly coloured; and his second (age 6) was the school photo from that year!

ImSoExhausted · 20/07/2018 18:11

@Mishappening we have to send ours by post or drop in by person, absolutely archaic 😂

Don’t risk it until you have the blue badge in your hand! It’s not worth it, although I question why it’s taking so long for you to receive one, seems a bit long to me, if you’ve got your evidence and paid (we have to here) then you should get it pretty quickly.

starfishmummy · 20/07/2018 18:19

We have to give the reg on the application but it's not on the blue badge.

enochroot · 20/07/2018 18:20

DH's blue badge arrived within a week of applying and was assigned to him, whatever car he was travelling in. The same with my neighbour who doesn't have a car of her own so she makes sure anyone who gives her a lift anywhere has it for the journey.

I was fined in a local town even though the badge was displayed. The time the ticket was written was about a minute after we'd parked. The warden must have watched me get DH's mobility scooter out of the car, assemble it, and watched me help him out of the car and onto it.

I appealed and won but I was told that the badge should have been laid flat on the dashboard, not propped up against the inside of the windscreen.

Cismyass · 20/07/2018 18:23

As a blue badge holder it would annoy me if you parked in the last available parking space when your preschool DC can presumabley go in a wheelchair/pushchair whereas i have to herd DD (i am the family cripple Grin). Apart from that go for it! Fuck the facebook arseholes-Those groups are for people with less than zero life unlike Mumsnet which is for the more sophistocated type preens but wonkily due to fucked back and hips

happypoobum · 20/07/2018 18:23

I really would not risk parking in a disabled bay anywhere without the actual blue badge. You could get fined or even clamped.

I don't understand why you didn't just put your dads reg number on the application - you can put any reg number you like as it is irrelevant. The badge is related to the person, not any specific car.
