What a silly thing to say

I was in the supermarket the other day, and a father was reprimanding his little child, who was upset, close to crying. The dad kept saying just to “man up” to stop “crying like a girl” etc. Now I’ve heard theses sayings many times before, but what a rubbish thing to say to a little child who wants comforting, but Instead gets stupid gender stereotype thrown at him! AIBU, to think adults shouldn’t talk to small kids like that? The older I get the angrier I become about this stuff!

My kid was going for a medical procedure he was nervous about.he didn't cry but was a bit squirt and visibly nervous.i told the medical professional he was nervous. She told him to "man up". I was very shocked at this!

YANBU. For the exact reasons you stated above. Poor kid. :(

Yanbu, it's awful. I hate sexist language like that but especially to children.

DS is only 7 months but I've already noticed how differently MIL speaks to him than DD. There's lots of "Aren't you a big, strong boy?" when he's really no different than DD at this age. Gender stereotyping starts from day 1 and you really have to battle against it. I really hope my son feels able to "cry like a girl" Maybe fewer young men would kill themselves if it was socially acceptable for them to open up.
