Calls from ambulance chasers

To be so annoyed by calls fromsno win no fee solicitors?

Five years ago I witnessed a young man being knocked off his motor bike. He wasn’t hurt badly but he was in shock. I stayed with him until the ambulance and police came and gave a witness statement to the police. A few days later the young man contacted me to say the driver who had him was denying liability so I sent another statement of what I had seen and heard + photos I had taken at the scene directly to him so he could forward them to his insurance company.

As I say, that was FIVE years ago and my reward for being a good citizen is to still be harassed by people calling me up to ask about the accident I was involved in and offering to get compensation for me. It’s driving me crazy and almost makes me regret helping him out.

Hopefully there is some sort of time limitation to suing after an accident and then the calls will stop because it is driving me mad.

Use a call blocker on your phone

TheGruffalo30 · 19/07/2018 18:15

I don't think it actually has anything to do with that incident. They're just cold callers.

Register with TPS and ask to be added to their suppression lists :)

Hope this helps

Loonoon · 19/07/2018 18:16

I wish. It’s a different company every time. They must just keep selling the lists on. For five bloody years.

I get these a lot and I've never been in a car accident so I doubt the two are related.

chemenger · 19/07/2018 18:19

It’s nothing to do with any actual accident, they’re just cold calling. They usually claim to have information about an accident. If you ask them where they got that information they will hang up. If you ask them what your name is they usually also hang up. They need you to offer them information, they don’t have any.

Loonoon · 19/07/2018 18:19

I am with TPS and these are the only cold calls I get which is why I think it’s related to the accident. I could be wrong though.

I get these about every two weeks, I’ve never been involved in an accident. Though sometimes I do tell them that I was killed in one, which annoys them. I also sometimes ask them to hold for a moment and just leave them hanging until they give up.

AaronPurrSir · 19/07/2018 18:21

I get these and have never been involved in any accidents. All from different companies - they pass your details around.

Surely these kinds of calls and the sharing of your details is now illegal due to GDPR? Does anyone know the legalities of this? I’d love to throw a load of legal jargon at the scum companies who make these calls.

Haberpop · 19/07/2018 18:22

I don't think this has anything to do with the accident, lots and lots of people get them, The Guardian had a guide on how to prevent such calls.

TheGruffalo30 · 19/07/2018 18:23

You need to request erasure but they're highly unlikely to actually listen or do anything as they're dodgy nobodies who don't care and change numbers/names so can't be traced.

I've asked for opt ins, suppression, erasure, SAR etc etc but they just hang up

chemenger · 19/07/2018 18:23

They’re the only cold calls I get as well. Ask them to tell you your name and where they got your number, I guarantee they will hang up.

zsazsajuju · 19/07/2018 18:24

It’s nothing to do with the accident and not solicitors. You would have no right to claim anything 5 years after the accident even if you ever had any sort of claim. Just hang up - everyone gets these nuisance calls.

agedknees · 19/07/2018 18:24

My dh has a lovely line when they call. They ask about his accident and he says it caused amnesia. So they ask what happened (because they are thick) and my dh says I can’t remember.

If he’s feeling bored he lets it go on for a while.

noselimit · 19/07/2018 18:25

I play a bit with these people.

I ask them which accident they are talking about and they try to lead me to think they are talking about my specific accident, so I say no, I mean which one, I have been involved in several. Then we go round the houses with me asking questions about the accident because I have been waiting for my insurance to call. They are taught to be sketchy so can't outright tell me they are not from my company. It goes round in circles for a good while until I get bored or they hang up.

I haven't been in an accident. I know they are just people and they are just doing a job but the nature of their job is cuntish so I feel it's fine to mess about with them.

MorrisDancingViv · 19/07/2018 18:26

It has nothing to do with that actual accident. Your details are out there for whatever reason. Best advice is do not answer unknown calls. There is no point them calling numbers which aren't being used. I very rarely receive unsolicited calls these days after not answering unknown calls and I was being pestered a few years back.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 19/07/2018 18:28

I get these every now and again. Last accident I was in was in 1998!
I use a line I saw on here. "Oh yes, it was a very serious accident. I died."
Then I hang up.

Fintress · 19/07/2018 18:28

It's definitely nothing to do with the accident you witnessed as I was getting them constantly until I started using call blockers. Everyone gets them. I'm TPS, ex directory and don't give my home number out to anyone and I still got them.

chemenger · 19/07/2018 18:28

It’s not just fine to mess with them, it’s a moral duty. Every minute being messed with is a minute they are not scamming someone vulnerable.

ForalltheSaints · 19/07/2018 18:45

I don't get them, lucky me. Though I agree with chemenger about how messing them about is a duty.

chemenger · 20/07/2018 18:04

Just had one of these calls. Three times I asked them to tell me my name because they must know who they are calling if it is “just a confirmation call”. Eventually she conceded defeat and said she would remove me from their list, and wished me a nice day. I think asking where they got their information about the “accident “ gets them to give up quicker. Quickest of all is just hanging up but it’s not as much fun.

Racecardriver · 20/07/2018 18:13

Time limitation for most civil claims is six years. Re the calls:
'Hi,i heard you were involved in a car accident that wasn't your fault.'
'Yeah it was really bad.'
'I understand you were injured.'
'Yes, yes I was. Horrible injury. It was so bad I died.'
Click.
Works every time.

Racecardriver · 20/07/2018 18:13

Not sure whether irs because they are stupid enough to belts E me or they finally get the do not call message.
