AIBU to think men prefer fake looking women?

I can't help but feel suspicious everytime I read the results from a survey where it is suggested that men prefer the "natural" look. This just doesn't seem to reflect my experience in real life and also what I see on social media or on TV.

We have Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian who have both obviously had a LOT of work being viewed as the pinnacle of female attractiveness whilst Meghan from Love Island who has apparently been completely remodeled by surgeon seems to have attracted the most men in Love Island.

AIBU to suggest despite their protestations that men actually don't favour the natural look at all?

but you'll never find men getting into a long conversation about what sort of men women find hot.

This is bollocks

PrincessPear · 20/07/2018 16:58

No beautiful person is “natural”. Some look more natural than others, but no one is purely natural.

josphine · 20/07/2018 16:59

IcedPurple

If casting directors didn't think she was beautiful, why was she cast or even discovered?

As for why they bleached her hair etc, it's because the camera is very unforgiving. Even people who don't wear makeup tend to wear it on their wedding day. The photos last forever. The camera adds 10 pounds etc. It's easy for celebs (Who are generally insecure and afraid of aging) to go a bit far.

IcedPurple · 20/07/2018 17:00

What do you mean by 'natural'?

Are/were all of these women naturally beautiful? Yes.

Did we see these women in their 'natural' state? Absolutely not.

All of them wear/wore make up. All colour(ed) their hair. All wear/wore restrictive undergarments. Mirren and Foster have had work done. So not really all that 'natural'.

josphine · 20/07/2018 17:01

Also why are people bringing up porn? Contouring and the KimK makeup didn't come from porn, it came from DRAG. Porn stars don't even look like that. Who in porn had ass implants except fetishists? Complete nonsense.

IcedPurple · 20/07/2018 17:02

Like I keep saying... yes she was beautiful. No she was not considered sufficiently sexy for the male gaze.

As for why they bleached her hair etc, it's because the camera is very unforgiving.

And yet male sex symbols aren't generally required to bleach their hair and wear restrictive undergarments.

IcedPurple · 20/07/2018 17:03

@BadLad

Fair enough.

Can you link to a comparable discussion on a mostly male discussion board?

josphine · 20/07/2018 17:05

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Bless you, you are so very naive. Male actors who are sex symbols also bleach their hair, wear makeup, wear spanx and get surgery as well.

Lol, I really didn't think anyone didn't get this in 2018.

FrustratedTeddyLamp · 20/07/2018 17:06

Whats natural? Most "natural" women are covered in make up. So men base them off that, then see them without.

TornFromTheInside · 20/07/2018 17:06

If your say masterbating your not going to use the image of random John/Joanne down the road your going to use the airbrushed perfect fantasy whoever image because it’s never going to be real it’s just a fake fantasy world. Doesn’t mean you don’t find John/Joanne attractive though and that they are actually your ideal and perfect to you person.

I have no faces in my fantasies. They are scenarios and feelings rather than people.
I'm not sure porn stars are particularly attractive, certainly not the ones I've seen on TV shows that are supposedly famous.
I suppose everybody has their own 'thing' but I'm not convinced the world is maturbating to Nicole Scherzinger just because she is attractive. Maybe I'm wrong though.

SwimmingKaren · 20/07/2018 17:08

I think men “think” they prefer natural women so will say that when really they don’t know what natural women really look like anymore. Grin

IcedPurple · 20/07/2018 17:08

Bless you, you are so very naive.

And you are so very patronising.

Male actors who are sex symbols also bleach their hair, wear makeup, wear spanx and get surgery as well.

Right. Since you're so much better informed than me, can you list all those platinum haired male sex-symbols from the Bardot era?

IcedPurple · 20/07/2018 17:11

Yea, I said something similar.

A lot of men think that unless a woman has a trout-pout, caked-on orange foundation, bright red lipstick and footballer's wife hair extensions, then she's 'natural'.

What they don't understand is that the 'natural look' often requires more product and more effort than the full Kardashian look!

ChristinaMarlowe · 20/07/2018 17:13

My husband says he doesn't find anything he can buy himself to be sexy - fake boobs, bums, lips, etc.
I say thanks a lot DH for the mental image of you with a cleavage... Envy(not envy!)
I think it's generational ~ teenagers and early 20s lads seem to find it more attractive. Their ideal woman is more plastic perfect than men in their 30s+. It's sad to be honest.

MarcieBlue · 20/07/2018 17:14

I remember on a couple occasions being told by men they hated fakery. One saying he hated fake tan. I told him I was wearing fake tan and he was shocked and said well not like yours.

I've had men say they don't like hair extensions but again said I'm wearing them and they were taken aback.

Basically men like natural fakery. Natural makeup can mean using loads of different things but in a deuy and fresh way. Having hair that looks healthy and classy.

My boobs are by my belly button and I want a boob job. No way is natural best unless your naturally pert.

So I think basically it's about looking natural rather than being natural. Unfortunately we aren't all models.

TornFromTheInside · 20/07/2018 17:15

I think they do know. They wake up with them don't they? They see them after showering etc.
I think it's the other way around that women are so conditioned to believe the advertising instead of men, they refuse believe men.
I know loads of men who have had experience of partners getting too thin despite them being told they looked fantastic with some curves.
Women are being bombarded with TV shows, advertising and articles about their looks. Those factors massively outweigh what men are telling them.

josphine · 20/07/2018 17:18

Well for a start, Burt Lancaster was quoted in his own biography as saying "the only thing real about him were his eyes"

I'm not going to trawl through google when you have access if you coul be bothered to look. Google plastic surgery hollywood men. Most men in hollywood (just like the women) are rumored to have had nosejobs. And they openly admit to wearing make up and spanx. Plus actors have talked openly about how they get their "muscular" bodies (Extreme diets, lipo and steriods often).

MarcieBlue · 20/07/2018 17:18

I agree icedpurple. Someone with a fantastic surgeon and money for expensive beuty products can look natural but really isn't at all.

IcedPurple · 20/07/2018 17:19

I know loads of men who have had experience of partners getting too thin despite them being told they looked fantastic with some curves.

"Too thin" is subjective however. Maybe the women in question thought they looked better when very thin?

josphine · 20/07/2018 17:19

IcedPurple

I'm sorry but you have a good point when it comes to average people on the street but "sexy" male hollywood actors are just as primped and preened as "sexy" female ones are.

TornFromTheInside · 20/07/2018 17:20

And it's probably why so many women never feel good enough, because advertisers want you to feel dependent on their products.

I can't deny some men will criticise and make a woman feel inadequate too, but I still think advertising is the largest influence.

IcedPurple · 20/07/2018 17:21

I'm not going to trawl through google when you have access if you coul be bothered to look.

Ah the old cop out!

Fact is there were few if any bleacho male sex-symbols from the Bardot era.

And despite your inexplicably patronising comments, I'm well aware than lots of men in Hollywood get stuff done. But no way is it on the same level as the female stars.

Pengggwn · 20/07/2018 17:24

Lots of men like the signalling of sexual availability that they think they see when they see big hair, big boobs, lots of colour and skimpy clothes. But they don't like their girlfriends to signal the same sexual availability to other men.

IcedPurple · 20/07/2018 17:25

I remember on a couple occasions being told by men they hated fakery. One saying he hated fake tan. I told him I was wearing fake tan and he was shocked and said well not like yours.

This exactly! I've had men talk negatively about bleached hair and when I said I have bleached hair they were all.... well, I didn't mean you!

I've also had people tell me I wear hardly any make up when in fact most days I have a full face - just not in bright or very obvious colours. They would certainly notice if I wasn't wearing it!

And I like the expression 'natural fakery'. That's exactly what it is.

TornFromTheInside · 20/07/2018 17:25

Beauty is subjective too.
They never felt they looked better though, as in they just get thinner and thinner, or spend more and more on looking better, but never feel happy. That's because the beauty they are seeking does not exist. It is always one step away from them.
Conditioned to feel inadequate, no matter what you do.
