Rap songs with NASTY language in a kids play centre?

DairyMilkisEvil · 18/07/2018 22:55

I am on holiday in Europe and today took the kids to a massive multiplex swimming pool centre with slides, fun pools, etc. The place is designed for kids and they must have about a thousand thru their doors every day.

The cafe part is all open plan, it is right next to the toddler park and it's all open so kids in the toddler pools and everyone in the cafe can hear the loud music they play.

We were sitting at the cafe waiting for a full half hour earlier today for two kids chicken nugget type meals. After ten minutes I asked where they were as it was pretty empty in the cafe and he said "two minutes they're just doing them now." Actually he was lying, they had actually completely forgotten the order.

While we were waiting my two were treated to rap music in English which clearly included the words fucking, bitch, pussy, and a nice description of the singer going down on his bitch. FFS!!!

I went back up to the counter to ask them to change the music, but they literally didn't come out from behind their glass screens for 15 minutes. I have no idea what they were doing in there. I gestured for them to come but they ignored me. In the end I even put my head round the door and asked if someone could come out and help me but it was still literally eons before anyone actually bothered to saunter out to the counter.

So not only did they forget to cook my kids meal but they made us listen to some pretty vile language while we were doing it, and yep my kids did notice it.

AIBU that I had a big stroppy strop about it all when they eventually came to the counter? I was not pleased.

That sounds grim. I think there is a if its in a foreign language, it doesn't count. I moved from London to Sweden. English songs on the radio are not filtered, there is no watershedon TV for language here. Today we were watching Four in a Bed (about British B&B's) and twice they played an gambling add for 'No Bullshit' online gaming. Saying 'No Bullshit' and flashing the words on the screens it was 3pm and its the school holidays.

The teachers at our primary local school moan about the language in the playground/classroom but they don't really do anything about it. Children are told to put their index finger to their lips and do a 'sshhh' if another child swears. When I suggested, shouldn't they tell you, I was told 'We don't have the time for every swear word'. The children were 8.

What did they say after your strop?

DairyMilkisEvil · 18/07/2018 23:26

He lied about the chef forgetting about the food order to start with and then he admitted it and had to refund me.

He was smirking about the foul language on the music which of course really goaded me.

KC it's interesting to hear your take
on it. Given that I'm in Holland where they all seem to speak English, it's strange that the adults think this sort of English language is acceptable in a kids amusement place!

A bit of an over reaction, was it not?

ManyCrisps · 19/07/2018 01:41

But English isn’t there first language so the language is acceptable because it isn’t in Dutch I’ve had the same experience in a department store in Madrid where they were playing Kanye West’s Goldigger where there was no censorship whatsoever at first I was surprised but then I realised it mustn’t matter as the song isn’t saying the same in Spanish.

Got any suggestions about what they could do about it that wouldn't result in them getting abuse off the kids, or rebellion, and undermining what authority they have left? Why was the first response to this thread blaming teachers?

@KC225

Thank god you could offer a suggestion. Surely as a part of the SMT you understand that making it into a big deal means it's more likely to be continued?

I was told 'We don't have the time for every swear word'

How long do you think it takes to speak to a child and get to the bottom of it and then 'deal' with it?

stopgap · 19/07/2018 03:59

Oh my gosh. This reminds me of the time we went to a soft play centre in Cannes, and they were playing the unedited version of “N-word in Paris” by Jay-Z and Kanye. My kids were oblivious, as they were only four and two, but I thought it was pretty insane.

Gottokondo · 19/07/2018 04:03

Dutchie here. Little kids don't speak enough English to understand that. It is still a foreign language that they have to learn in school. He still should have listened to your reasonable request though.

Contact management, or leave a terrible review online. Make sure you add the date and time so the employees can be identified. I would be annoyed too, nothing can be done if management isn't told

Sleephead1 · 19/07/2018 06:37

the food thing it happens I wouldn't be that bothered by that as it was a mistake also if you waited 10 minutes well is that not pretty normal I mean they would have had to cook the nuggets ECT. The music I would have been annoyed about as I wouldn't want my child to listen to that. I do listen to that kind of music sometimes but on a music player with headphones when my little boys at nursery I would never play it in front of him .

KC225 · 19/07/2018 09:14

Gunny Really? Yes, I suggested that maybe my eight daughter could tell her Teacher that she has been called 'fucking little bitch cunt' and a 'dirty little cocksucker' in her language by a boy of 9. She was told to put her finger to her lips and say 'ssssh'. What impact do you suppose that has?

Would you accept being spoken to like that in a workplace? Why should my daughter have to accept being called names like that at 8 years old. What message is that sending her. At their small primary school in London - swearing at another child resulted in a visit to the Head and classes in London were 31 not the 14 they have in this part of Sweden.

KC225 · 19/07/2018 09:42

wrongontheinternet If you re-read my post I mention in the first paragraph that offensive language is on the radio and television daytime and there is no watershed. Melodifestivalen is an Ex Factor type music show over a few weeks to find to Eurovsison song entry. It's big Saturday night family viewing but one of the songs on was a guy singing a chorus of 'Your so fucking beautiful, I can't stand it'. There were complaints, mainly of native English speakers. And in the finals it was changed to 'Your so freaking beautiful I just can't stand it.

I am not blaming the teachers. My Swedish husband is a teacher and he knows teachers re moaning about the bad language. My post was referring to primary school children, 8-9 year olds (added that they only start reception the August after their 6th birthday) . Do you have to worry about rebellion/return abuse and undermining authority from children of year 1 and 2. My husband doesn't accept it in his secondary school classes.

Branleuse · 19/07/2018 09:45

haha, i remember watching jerry springer in france with none of the swearing bleeped out. It was quite funny to hear, and also songs in foreign speaking countries rarely bleep out any swears
