To worry about extremely hot chilli at 30weeks

I apologise in advance as this is probably going to sound incredibly paranoid.
I am posting here as the pregnancy board is quite quiet sometimes.

Tonight DH cooked a lovely Thai curry. He used little chillis and when I ate one it was the hottest thing I have ever tasted. My eyes were streaming and I couldn't breathe. It was the levels of heat that I imagine people would eat for a dare. Totally unpleasant.

I ended up gargling with milk and after 10mins felt better.

I'm not concerned about the connection between hot food and triggering labour in the typical sense, I.e. diarrhoea causes contractions to start (or something along those lines!). I am more concerned that eating something quite as spicy as this, equates to eating something poisonous and the possible effects that may have at 30weeks.

Apologies again if I am sounding like a lunatic. I know I sound paranoid but it was actually a bit frightening and now I'm worried that it could affect the baby.

I promise it will be ok. Hot chillies can be very unpleasant but they are not poisonous for humans. Sorry you were made to feel so uncomfortable, what a shame. Keep on with the milk.

Dilligaf81 · 18/07/2018 22:04

I used to eat really hot food and no it wouldn't poison your baby although they may be a bit more active.
Good luck with it all.

YABU

Thanks

Food in places like India is spicy as hell and pregnant women seem to have no problems eating it.

If your mouth is still burning, sip hot water. I find it works better than milk

Pittcuecothecookbook · 18/07/2018 22:10

Don't worry- if that's all it took, no-one would ever have to be medically induced.

Some people empty their bowels beford labour and make the association with spicey curries 'helping you along' with that, but there's no evidence of it actually working. Don't panic

Bambamber · 18/07/2018 22:12

It won't have a poisonous effect on you or baby Smile

ToastyFingers · 18/07/2018 22:16

You'll be fine. Absolutely fine.

I lived for spicy food when I was pregnant with dd2 and the more you eat, the higher your tolerance gets. By the end I was chopping raw (very hot) chillies and adding them to almost all my food. My lips were often quite sore but dd2 came at 40+1 and perfectly healthy. She ironically hates spicy food now.

I had curries all the time around that time as my bump had come down a little away from my chest and it didnt repeat on me anymore. Sex pineapple scrubbing floors etc etc didnt work either...they all came well over a week past my due date

gunnyBear · 19/07/2018 04:41

How do you think they manage in countries where hot food is typical? I was living in Thailand when pregnant with my first.

Sadly I had a to avoid spicy food when pregnant as I had killer heartburn.

You'll be fine.

ThePrioryGhost · 19/07/2018 04:56

I think maybe OP is worrying because it’s not typical for her? Plus, pregnancy hormones don’t always make you feel rational!

OP you won’t have poisoned yourself or the baby, but you might have a bit of acid reflux or other discomfort, so make sure you have some Rennies available. Ah, chalky orange Rennies - the taste of the third trimester Grin

Congratulations - not too long to go now!

flumpybear · 19/07/2018 05:22

You'll be fine. I love curry and with my first child pregnancy actually made me want hotter curry so I now eat madras heat curry instead of something less spicy beforehand like masala
Yummy!
