AIBU - job offers

Bearseatbeets · 18/07/2018 18:23

I’ve applied for two jobs, both were supposed to be interviewing this week.
One invited me to interview today, the other has postponed interviews til two weeks time.

The interview in 2 weeks is the job I really want, but the one today would be better than where I am. So WIBU to accept the one today but then take that back if I get offered the other job in 2 weeks?

I’d worry about it if you get offered one or the other. It’s tough out there, there’s a lot of competition.

Bearseatbeets · 18/07/2018 18:33

Sorry, should have said they have offered me the job! I thought I had written that

Do what’s right for you. So accept this one, and then turn it down I need a few weeks f you have to.

Moreisnnogedag · 18/07/2018 18:34

Oh please. I have had similar, told the first that I needed sometime to look at the contract and rota and then when offered the second accepted that one and declined the first. They offered it to the next best candidate who accepted. Hardly the end of the world.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 18/07/2018 18:34

What would happen if you didn’t get the second job? Would you be kicking yourself for turning down job number 1, or happy to move on with applying for others?

Bearseatbeets · 18/07/2018 18:36

Throughthickandthin - I think I would kick myself. Job 1 is good, it’s just that Job 2 is amazing!

Current job is crap! So I want out

I’d accept then, and pull out if you get the second one.

TroubledLichen · 18/07/2018 18:43

Call/email job no.2 and explain the situation. Tell them that you very much want to work for them but that you’ve had another offer and need to accept or decline in a reasonable time frame and ask if there is anything they can do to bring the interview date forward. If they’re that keen on you then you might get lucky. I’ve done it before and it worked out for me anyway. Good luck!

DailyMailReadersAreThick · 18/07/2018 18:46

If they offered you the job then something changed and they no longer needed you, do you think they would hesitate to rescind the offer? Nope. A huge proportion of new recruits don't work out for whatever reason.

The only danger is if you burn bridges. My industry is huge but somehow everybody knows everybody, and if you piss off an important employer it can really close doors.

Bearseatbeets · 18/07/2018 18:53

DailyMail - I love your name and you’re right. That’s one of my fears, but I will have to try and do it in a decent way!

Not unreasonable at all you owe these people nothing at this stage. Accept the job and see the other interview goes. Better to have a job in reserve than no job.
I interview all the time and people changing their mind is just part of the territory it’s not a big deal.
