... to ask how to cut long hair yourself?

Following on from the thread about disastrous haircuts, there are quite a lot of people describing cutting their own hair. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3309152-Shits-about-to-go-down-in-the-salon?pg=1

So - please can you share your methods for cutting long hair so that it's straight and all the same length?

many thanks in advance for the savings on hairdressers!

I would also like to know this.

TakeMeToKernow · 18/07/2018 18:00

I was eyeing up my kitchen scissors as I was reading that thread! I don’t have anyone I can ask to do it for me, so, yep... bring on the DIY tips!

Lucked · 18/07/2018 18:01

Oh I got all excited you were going to try the mumsnet haircut but that has layering.

Oct18mummy · 18/07/2018 18:08

I’m terrible with my hair, I part my hair into bunches, twist the bunches then chop of the dead ends 😬

frenchfancy · 18/07/2018 18:10

I plait my hair in 2 plaits then trim the ends. Then I do the mumsnet hair cut to get layers. I've done it like this for years.

TakeMeToKernow · 18/07/2018 19:06

What the heck is the mumsnet haircut? Link please!

is that the unicorn?

Scotsrule · 18/07/2018 19:11

I put it in a pony tail and took hubbys clippers to the end of it - it was pretty straight

DoneDisappeared · 18/07/2018 19:13

I've been using a variation of this method for years: feyeselftrim.livejournal.com

GissASquizz · 18/07/2018 19:27

I am trying the u.

Apileofballyhoo · 18/07/2018 19:33

I cut mine myself but it usually takes a few days to get it even. Brush or comb it into whatever way you normally wear it and then divide it in half at the back and bring it all around to the front and cut so that both sides of your face are the same length. Comb it out, do it again but just bring it around to the front in sections and you should catch the sticky out longer bits.

There's loads of tutorials on you tube which show it really clearly

frenchfancy · 18/07/2018 20:03

I can't find the original clip I saw on MN - I think it was from This Morning on ITV but these show the principal.

Bellends · 18/07/2018 20:26

I use a crea clip for mine. It's amazing

Ringsender2 · 18/07/2018 23:24

This? Looks good but is it actually more of a shopping channel gizmo? Also, do you need clippers or can you use scissors?

I also use a crea clip. Have also used the tiny rubber bands but crea clip is quicker and easier.

You tube has lots of videos of people using them.

ToadOfSadness · 19/07/2018 00:13

You can get the clips for a few £ on Ebay, they arrive on a card with the instructions in Chinese but it is clear how to use them. No need to pay a lot for them. Choose which shape you want your hair to be, smooth it and put the clip in, slide it to where you want to cut and cut up to the clip. Remove the clip and you are done.

OlennasWimple · 19/07/2018 00:17

Three tips:

  • start longer than you think you want - you can always take more off
  • think very carefully about how short the shortest bit of hair will be - if you want it to be longer, slide the band / clip down a bit more until you are satisfied that you won't end up looking like Sam Fox in the 1980s
  • use sharp scissors - sharpen your kitchen scissors using a knife sharpener, or (better) buy some that you only use for this purpose (I once read a thread on here about someone bemoaning their MN self-hair cut after they had drunkenly attacked their hair using their pizza scissors Grin That was never going to end well, was it.....)
